Review of King Lei Lei Hotel (Ximending, Taipei, Taiwan)

About three months before our trip to Taipei, we booked a family hotel room via Agoda.com in King Lei Lei Hotel in Ximending (台北市西门町) at a discounted price. The primary reason why we chose this hotel was its close proximity to many tourist places in the city. Several other satisfied guests recommend staying in this hotel because of comfort and convenience. The property is five minutes’ walk to Ximending metro station, which makes it accessible for us to travel to many areas easily. Below is my review of King Lei Lei Hotel as a budget hotel in Taipei, Taiwan.

Review of King Lei Lei Hotel 金丽丽旅社(Ximending, Taipei, Taiwan)

Ambiance: ★★★★☆

King Lei Lei Hotel may be an appealing option for backpackers, budget travelers, and other easygoing travelers in Taipei. It was built in 1980 and was renovated in only this year (2015). This budget hotel is nowhere a trendsetter in the “artsy” department. Thus, those looking for a more exquisite and elegant hotel should definitely think twice. In our case, since we’re out most of the time whenever we travel, we’re fine sticking just with the basics.

The “quad” room we occupied was good for four people. With two queen-size beds, a sofa, and a dresser, the room looked quite old-fashioned but it was in pretty good shape. In terms of design, King Lei Lei Hotel is not really fit for a king.

The bedroom was outfitted with standard amenities, such as the electric fan, AC, telephone, mini fridge, free Wi-Fi and cable LCD TV. All will be fine for families who are willing to overlook a scuff or two on the wall. The best things about this room were that it’s relatively spacious for a family and it had a laid back atmosphere which I thought could easily win over travelers looking for a quiet, unique place to stay.

The private bathroom had a minimalist theme. Shower was efficient with both cold and hot water. Slippers, towels, shampoo, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste were provided.

Service: ★★★★☆

I’m not sure if people at the hotel counter know how to speak and understand English because we spoke to them in Mandarin all the time. They were not so friendly but were accommodating enough to manage our requests. We asked for additional coffee, towels, and tissue paper, and we were allowed to just get the stuff from the hotel’s moving cart of toiletries and freebies without question and without added cost.

The reception area wasn’t manned at all times, but there’s a bell that guests would have to ring to call the staff’s attention. We didn’t encounter any problem checking in and out of the hotel. Our room was cleaned and maintained daily.

Price for Value: ★★★★☆

King Lei Lei Hotel in Ximending has 22 rooms. It’s good for couples, solo travelers, families with children (both young and older), and business travelers. As a point of reference for budgeting, the double room (for two) costs USD 26.23 per night, and the quad room (for four) costs USD 44. Considering price for value, it’s a bargain. 🙂 We stayed here for three nights.

That sounds like a pretty good budget hotel. The rooms look a little on the small side but cozy. I’d definitely stay there.

The halls and the entrance did not look really nice and pleasing, but our overall experience was okay. This is a good hotel if you’re the type who stays mostly outside like us. 🙂

That place sound like a great place when on a budget. I am a little far away to go there now, but if I ever get out that way I will remember this post.

We found so many hostels and inns to stay in Taipei but the space is not as large as the room we stayed in here in King Lei Lei Hotel. If you’re traveling with your family, the suite here will be enough. 🙂

I’ve never been there before but would consider staying in this budget hotel. Your photos give a super idea of how everything looks and what to expect.

This budget hotel is quite decent. It’s not as charming as other hotels we stayed in, but it’s not terrible either. You can also recommend King Lei Lei Hotel to your friends. 🙂

I have friends who live in Taiwan who studied abroad at my university so I have wanted to visit this location for some time now. This seems like a great hotel for travel on a budget. I agree that I do not need many of the amenities as I am usually out exploring most of the trip and not in my hotel room.

    1. Rochkirstin Santos Avatar

Exactly. 🙂 I don’t mind staying in a low-end hotel as long as it’s safe and convenient.

I have traveled in Asia before, never Taipei, but I know how small and cramped the rooms can be. This hotel looks very nice

    1. Rochkirstin Santos Avatar

Yup. This is far from the crampy budget hotels in Hong Kong and Singapore.

The setup of the hotel looks comfortable. I also prefer hotels in Taipei near the MRT since it makes going around easier.

We had no issues with this hotel. The neighboring streets were quiet and it’s a huge plus when you value security and privacy.

This looks like a nice place to stay. The room may be small but it looks comfortable. I also love that it looks clean.

    1. Rochkirstin Santos Avatar

Haha, I didn’t think it’s small considering it’s a budget hotel. With two beds, one sofa, and good space for walking, the room was completely fine for the four of us. 🙂

it is very neat and simple and I guess those are the strongest points of this hotel that makes it very ideal for tourists whether on budget or not..
    PS
I love the bed sheet LOL

It was so cold and we had to turn off the A/C in the middle of the night. What I like about the hotel is that there’s a cabinet intended only to stock the comforters to get you warm and make you feel more comfortable.

I find it super interesting to see what hotels look like in different parts of the world. While, as you say, this wasn’t a high end fancy hotel, it did offer everything you and your family needed for your trip, and you were close to the places you wanted to visit too.

    1. Rochkirstin Santos Avatar

That’s right. When choosing a hotel, I almost always make sure that the location is convenient (near the MRT, near the shopping areas, and near the restaurants). I don’t want to travel far and take so much time to reach out to places we want to visit.

This hotel looks like it would be comfortable. I do not spend a lot of time at the hotel when we travel so this would be great for me.

    1. Rochkirstin Santos Avatar

Right. If you don’t want to spend too much money on the hotel and at the same time, you want a great stay, this place strikes a perfect trade-off.

  14. Melissa Avatar

I have never thought about visiting there in the past but it looks great. I think I know where I will stay when I do visit.

Taiwan is a great travel destination in Asia where you get to learn more of the Chinese culture and taste delectable food. King Lei Lei Hotel is a good option for a decent accommodation.

  15. emiliana Avatar

It is a good place to stay when you’re travelling on a shoestring.

    1. Rochkirstin Santos Avatar

Right. We even scored a good discount since we booked via Agoda and we used up the points my mom has accumulated in the last year. 🙂

  16. Tatanisha Pitts-Worthey Avatar

It sounds like a nice budget hotel and you still got everything you needed, not bad at all. Getting a budget hotel is a good idea since you’re always out most of the time.

    1. Rochkirstin Santos Avatar

I’d say give this place a shot. With Taipei’s night markets and plenty of shopping areas, you would not want to spend all night sleeping in the hotel anyway. Haha. 🙂

Might not be the most luxurious but it’s budget friendly and for a quick stop its quite perfect.

    1. Rochkirstin Santos Avatar

We had a wonderful stay here and if ever we would return to Taipei next time, we will still choose to stay in King Lei Lei Hotel in a heartbeat! 🙂

Sounds like a good hotel to stay under a small budget with all basic amenities needed as well. The pictures are good enough to explain the look & feel as well.

Looks like a great place to rest in Taiwan! I will have to give it a try!

    1. Rochkirstin Santos Avatar

Sure. While King Lei Lei Hotel may not stand out in the sea of hotels because of its exterior, this is a pretty decent place to stay when on a short vacation in Taipei.

Do they have an english signboard? Is this along the main street or in an alley? Is it along Hanzhong or Changsha? Can’t seem to find it in googlemap.

    1. Rochkirstin Santos Avatar

There’s no English signboard. Just type “King Lei Lei Hotel Taiwan” on maps.google.com and you will find it. 🙂

Hi! Is it easy to locate and is the place safe. I saw a photo of the street entrance and it doesn’t look that much appealing. Thank you!

        1. Rochkirstin Santos-Sioco Avatar

Yes, it’s very easy to find. The hotel overall does not look fancy or appealing but it’s okay especially if you’ll be out most of the time.
