  • Single Teeth Whitening at The Smile Bar (Ayala Malls Vertis North, Quezon City)

Single Teeth Whitening at The Smile Bar (Ayala Malls Vertis North, Quezon City)

I always want to feel confident with my smile. I spent good money on two years of orthodontic work to get my teeth in tiptop shape. For that, I’m grateful to my kind dentist who’s been patient in adjusting my braces monthly. He had recommended laser teeth whitening before, but because of some caution about tingling pain and side effects, the idea didn’t seem convincing enough. So when I read about the painless teeth whitening procedure at The Smile Bar, it quickly caught my attention. Especially since the price of the procedure is marked down at DealGrocer.com, I thought this would be an awesome opportunity to make my smile a little brighter.

    About The Smile Bar

The Smile Bar prides itself in offering first-class services in a unique spa-like environment. Following its success in Hong Kong and Bangkok, The Smile Bar launched its flagship store in BGC and newest branch in Vertis North to provide exclusive, safe, and effective alternatives to teeth whitening and whitening toothpaste for clients in the Philippines. I’m closer to Vertis North so I booked a session last weekend.

    Single Whitening Service

Their single whitening service uses the patented technology of Swedish brand, Brilliant Smile, to lighten teeth by 2 to 9 shades in just 1 session. The procedure starts with a Smile Tender assessing your teeth using The Smile Bar’s teeth shade guide. A pre-whitening treatment is done right after, which includes a mouth cleanse using their exclusive in-house products, so you’ll be selfie-ready 24/7 with whiter teeth.

    About My Experience

Upon arrival, I was amazed by the facility’s clean, white walls. Love the minimalist modern decor! The staff made me sign something like a waiver form and took me into the treatment area. Using their bleaching shade guide, she assessed the current shade of my teeth (S20) and showed me the possible whiter shades that can result from the treatment.

Then, she instructed me to wipe off my lipstick, gargle with their mouthwash specialized to clean and freshen mouth before brushing the teeth, brush my teeth, and rinse.

Next, I sat on the egg chair while listening to the staff as she explained about the procedures and do’s and don’ts of the single whitening session. They’re pretty straightforward and easy to understand. Just the basics: wear the goggles or protective glasses to protect your eyes from the UV-free LED Plasma Light, bite gently on the mouth guard with the dark blue whitening gel, and don’t move a lot (so their equipment will stay in proper position).

The whitening gel contains 6% hydrogen peroxide that’s very potent. What the UV light does is that it activates the hydrogen peroxide in the gel.

The staff offered their iPad and headphones for entertainment, but I preferred using my phone and play games instead. Time went by quickly. I didn’t feel any tingling sensation, pain, or any difference at all throughout the 20-minute session.

After the treatment, we went to the treatment area once again for the assessment. My teeth were four shades whiter, from S20 to S16! Honestly, I was hoping for S12. 🙂 Anyway, the staff said most people have the same result as mine and recommended another session (Double or Triple Whitening) for pearly whites ahead.

For post-treatment care, I was advised not to eat any colored food or liquid in the next 3 days. Otherwise, to prevent staining and preserve the result, they offer Nano Seal which is applied to the teeth. This comes with an extra charge of PhP 1299.

  • 5 Financial Steps Every New Parent Should Take

5 Financial Steps Every New Parent Should Take

Although they’ve been told that having a child is much more expensive than they can even begin to imagine, few new parents are really prepared for the financial steps they must consider once that baby is born. There is so much more to think about than the cost of supporting another family member, and unless you are prepared for all the financial decisions you will need to make, the cost of parenting just might overwhelm you. The following 5 financial steps every new parent should take will help you begin sorting your finances long before the baby arrives.

5 Financial Steps Every New Parent Should Take

    1. Immediately Add the Baby to Your Health Insurance

If there is one thing many parents don’t think about in the hours and days immediately following the birth of their child is that the baby isn’t automatically covered by their health insurance plan. After all, the plan covered a portion of all those doctor and hospital bills, so it may not dawn on you that your baby now needs to be covered as an individual person outside of their mom! The moment the baby is born, call your insurance provider and add the baby.

    2. Cover Your Co-Pays ASAP

Here, a word should be said about keeping those co-pays covered. Future coverage from your health insurance provider may be dependent on keeping those co-pays current simply because the providers they work with may be limited in your area. What would happen if there was one OB-GYN doctor in your local region and you plan to have another child in the near future? Some families like to keep children close in age, so they become playmates as well as siblings.

If you aren’t current on co-payments, you might need to look elsewhere, and much farther from home, for a doctor. It just might mean taking out a loan and if you aren’t sure which kind, check out several options you can research on this site. A personal loan can also help with other expenses you may have been unprepared for, so this may be something worth considering at this point in time.

    3. Apply for a Social Security Number

Don’t forget that there is little you can do without a social security number, from adding your child to your health plan to registering them in daycare so that mom (or dad!) can return to work after maternity leave. Believe it or not, getting a social security number is a financial step which must be taken, especially when it comes to the following steps you should take after the birth of your baby.

    4. Start a College Fund Immediately

According to a 2012 article in the U.S. News, the cost of a college education was rising by 6.5 percent a year. At that time, the cost of college per year was projected to be over $30,000 by 2030. Can you imagine what it will be by the time your child is of college age? A four-year degree could buy a new home! That site mentioned above, Crediful, can help you with more than learning how to take out a personal loan. You can also find advice on how to find the best savings accounts as well. Over a twenty-year period and with compounded interest, you may have saved enough to cover some of those exorbitant costs of post-secondary education.

    5. Update Your Dependent Status with the IRS

The birth of a baby gives you another dependent as well as a number of other potential tax breaks you may be eligible for. From healthcare costs to childcare and beyond, there are different tax breaks you may qualify for, so don’t forget to see your employer to fill out a new W-4 the very moment your new baby arrives.

Also, you may wish to get a bit of tax advice on just how many dependents to declare for withholding. Some high earners claim fewer deductions on payroll so that a greater amount is taken out each pay period. In this way, when it comes to filing your annual return, you have paid too much and may end up owing little to nothing when that dreaded April 15th comes around! This is something to consider if you expect to owe a huge tax bill.

There are so many other financial steps you may want to consider taking, but these 5 are critical. Not only do you want to ensure your baby’s future with things like term or whole life insurance but you want to know that you will have the medical coverage necessary for your baby’s health and the money to support that child in the here and now. What you do today affects all of your baby’s tomorrows and that’s a fact.

  • What Eating In Business Class Flights Is Like

What Eating In Business Class Flights Is Like

Business-class is a step above the economy class and although it’s more expensive it is because of the perks you get. From spacious seating to excellent service, it’s a better experience no matter how you look at it. Still the most notable and the best thing about flying business class has to be the exceptional dining experience. Food in business class is of another level. If you’re planning to go on a journey involving a long-haul flight, then consider a business class to experience these food-related perks.

    flying business class

You Get To Eat Whatever You Like

Various airlines keep upgrading their business class services to be the top among others. They provide services to make passengers feel like they’re in a luxurious hotel on the ground. Such a service can be for you to be able to choose whatever you wish to eat on a flight. There will a whole menu aboard for you to order from at whatever time you like. Moreover, you can ask a particular meal or a course to be served to you at a designated time so you can sleep soundly without being disturbed.

    Multi-Course Meals

While economy class food is served in plastic containers placed in single trays, business class food involves full-course meals placed in porcelain plates. These meals include an appetizer, a main course and beverage. These courses are prepared by talented chefs and taste like food from five-star restaurants. You should not miss out on this experience when you fly next time. To travel in business class at least once in your life you can always find discounted tickets to be able to afford this luxury.

    business class food

    Unlimited Drinks

A business class flight is nothing if unlimited drinks are not provided in it. They do not just offer a whole list of wines, soft drinks and champagne, but you can drink all you want at the bar situated in most business class airlines. You have paid its tab with your ticket, so you don’t have to worry about the spending.

Order Special Meals According to Your Diet

Meals in business class aren’t just about providing quality, but the staff also takes care of your special meal needs. It’ll be beneficial to opt for the business class as you can get specific food that is required by your diet. Your meal plan can also change if you’re not feeling well or are nauseous. If you’re traveling with children, you can pre-order food for them that is easily digestible or is to their liking.

    Dessert

In economy class, it’s up to the airline what you get as a meal and if you get dessert or not. Meals in business class always end with a dessert. You can choose your dessert or let the chefs surprise you exquisite sweet dishes of their own.

    Deliciously Designed Palates

With business-class food, you don’t just get to taste quality, but you’re provided entertainment for your eyes as well. The palate containing your food will be nicely decorated by trained designers to make the dining experience more enjoyable.

    Snacks

There is no way that three-course meals are offered and snacks are not, in a business class. In long-haul flights, snacks are also provided in between meals. These snacks can be anything from cookies to caviar; the choice is yours.

  • Ayumi Japan Eyelash and House of Resha (Greenhills, San Juan)

Ayumi Japan Eyelash and House of Resha (Greenhills, San Juan)

Eyelash extensions are on trend lately. The bigger, the longer, the bolder, the better! I had the opportunity to try out eyelash extensions at Ayumi Japan Eyelash last Sunday. Located in Unimart building in Greenhils, Ayumi Japan Eyelash offers services such as manicure, pedicure, nail art, foot spa, eyelash extensions and retouches. All products are sourced from Japan. 🌸 In this post, I’m sharing my experience and thoughts about lash extensions and the Swedish massage therapy. Also, below are tips and answers on what to expect which I think will be useful and helpful mostly for the uninitiated but curious. 😉

Ayumi 5D Lash Extensions at Ayumi Japan Eyelash (Greenhills, San Juan)

When I went in for the first time, I had zero idea about lash extensions. Will the application be painful? How long will the process take? Which type of extension swill be best for my eyes? How long will they last? How should I take care of them? What are they made of? These were the burning questions in my mind, which were all answered during my visit.

    Reception area:

    Lashes room:

First things first: What are lash extensions?

Unlike temporary false lashes, eyelash extensions are semi-permanent synthetic, faux mink or silk fibers which are applied strand by strand to your natural lashes to enhance your eyes. The benefits of mink lash extensions are that they are more feathery looking and lighter in general, so they put less pressure on your lashes.

Lash extensions are carefully applied one at a time using a specially-formulated, semi-permanent glue that won’t irritate or damage the natural lash. Each set should last about four to six weeks, depending on how you care for them and general wear and tear.

What types of lash extensions are available at Ayumi?

As mentioned above, Ayumi uses products from Japan. Premium sable light lashes and high-grade glue are used so these will not damage but enhance the growth of natural eyelashes. Ayumi eyelash extensions are also said to be long-lasting because of their quality and craftsmanship. Individually applied to natural eyelashes, they last for 3 to 5 weeks with retouches in between. There are extensions that feel a bit harder and those that are soft and light.

The health and thickness of your natural lashes as well as the shape of your face and eyes will be used to determine the right set of extensions for you. If you’re unsure, don’t fret! They have a menu to help guide the consultation, and the staff helps determine the lash extension that will best fit your aesthetic.

I told them I prefer a natural look and not too much with a dramatic voluminous effect. The staff suggested the Ayumi 5D Lash Extensions 12mm with a natural “C” curl.

    Selfie before the procedure
    Selfie before the procedure

How did the application process go?

I laid on a comfortable table with my eyes closed. The staff cleaned my eye area before beginning and placed pads and tapes around my eyes to allow her to get as close to the lash line as possible. The bottom lashes were shielded with under-eye tapes. This was the most uncomfortable part since I could feel the tapes whenever I blink while my eyes were close. Anyway, I got used to the mild discomfort after a while.

She then glued individual fibers to my own lashes at the root, stopping many times to look from different angles and brushing the lashes to make sure everything was perfect. During the application, we chatted and she explained what she was doing so I could understand. When she had finished, I slowly sat up and used a hand-held fan to finish drying the lashes before the mirror.

What to expect and what to do before the application?

It’s one tiny lash at a time, so don’t expect it to be snappy. Typically, it takes at least 90 minutes and possibly upward of two hours depending on the style of the lash extensions. In my case, the application took about an hour.

To get things done faster, you should arrive without makeup or mascara at least. Also, visit the restroom before the appointment begins since you won’t be able to open your eyes until at least the next hour. If you can find a way to relax, you can take a nap. I couldn’t take a nap because I was worried about my contact lenses.

Speaking of contact lenses, another tip is to remove them before the procedure. Since I was wearing contact lenses and didn’t bring a contact lens solution and case to remove them, I was worried about having an eye infection, having dry eyes, or worse, having swollen eye I couldn’t even open. Thankfully, my eyes were okay after dropping artificial tears to lubricate the lenses and relieve the dryness problem.

    “After” photo

What was my first reaction upon seeing the result?

It gave me a little shock. I didn’t expect how the lashes would look but I was impressed overall. The extensions really made my eyes look bigger and more striking! My eyes now looks amazing without any other eye makeup. No need to worry about having raccoon eyes with mascara or my eyelashes falling off with strips anymore! I love that the lashes are strategically designed with angles to ensure every last lash is curled.

What to do and not to do after?

Dont’s: After-care instructions include not wetting the lashes for the next five hours (so that the glue can dry completely), not applying mascara, and only using oil-free makeup and makeup remover. The following should also be avoided: steam, putting my face directly into the water in the shower, rubbing my eyes, and sleeping face down. All these can harm or damage the extensions or worse–make the natural lashes fall out.

Do’s: To preserve lash extensions, keep them clean and gently brush them with a pristine mascara wand or spoolie brush every day. The less you mess with them, the better and longer they are going to stay.

    How much did it cost?

Lash extensions can be a splurge. They’re perfect for special events and occasions and for those days when you want to look instantly beautiful and polished. The prices at Ayumi range from PhP 1,000 to PhP 5,000, depending on the type and desired look. For proper maintenance, you can go back for a retouch (P500) or a repair (PhP 750) every ten days.

Massage Therapy at House of Resha

Ayumi also has a spa area which debuted recently. It’s called House of Resha and it specializes in facials, body massages, body care, and lash lifts. I had the pleasure and convenience of getting a body massage right there as well.

    Facial room:

    Massage room:

One step into the massage room and I found myself drifting away into an oasis of calmness. House of Resha’s massage room is a peaceful and tranquil place with its own glass shower enclosure, so guests can take a shower before the massage. Toiletries and pampering sets of products are provided in the powder area, to give you that helping hand when you need to unwind. Bathrobe, slippers, disposable underwear, and disposable shorts are also available.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B5C-t3znkJD/

The therapist used a body lotion and massage oil that glided smoothly on the skin. With confident hands, she dished out 60 minutes of pure relief. Flowing, firm, consistent. She was attentive to adjusting pressure and found all of my tight spots in my back. The massage technique used was Swedish massage, a treatment for better circulation and manipulation of soft tissues of the body. Soothing instrumental music played in the background, and as if sounds go through the muscles, the tunes almost lulled me to sleep. After the massage, a warm towel was used to wipe off the excess oil.

    Worth recommending?

Yes! The long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping can definitely help relax and energize you, especially after a long walk or shopping around Greenhills. It’s a feel-good way to rejuvenate your body and indulge yourself without the exorbitant price tag of a luxury spa. If you prefer gentle rubs that will send you to slumber, then House of Resha is the place for you.

    Wrap Up

Ayumi and House of Resha (in the same space) in Unimart Greenhills are like hidden gems. The moment you enter, you are in sanctuary, away from the busy shopping environment. The therapists will take you through their various services and offerings, you pick your treatments from their menu, and your pampering begins. Set your mind free, soothe your senses, and bid your stress and worries goodbye. Prices of their services are reasonable, so money will be well spent. 😉

  • Review of Hanamaruken Ramen (Trinoma Mall, Quezon City)

Review of Hanamaruken Ramen (Trinoma Mall, Quezon City)

Trinoma is relatively close to our home but we super seldom visit this mall for unknown reason. Anyway, we thought of watching a movie there recently. Before then, we had lunch at Hanamaruken Ramen. Originating in Osaka in 1982, this ramen joint exudes a street-style charm in a modern setting. Its branch in Trinoma is apparently its first outside Japan, so we were much excited to try some Japanese food classics right at the spot.

Review of Hanamaruken Ramen (Trinoma Mall, Quezon City)

    Ambiance:

The ambiance offers good spaces for seating large groups. I like how Japanese decors were placed inside a glass wall, and the cage lighting inside even added up to an attractive visual display. A consistent gray color scheme and clean lines were followed throughout, giving a casual and upscale vibe.

    Food:

The menu features recommendations and clear descriptions, names, and photos of food. Louie ordered Hanamaruken’s Signature Happiness Ramen (Half, PhP 445) without batting an eyelash. It’s the signature ramen bowl that’s said to be a masterpiece created by Founder Takaku Arakawa himself. For sure, it must be something really special. And indeed, it was a comforting dish with hearty ingredients and a rich aroma. We were surprised to learn that the half size is still actually quite large. A sheet of nori on the side has the words “Happiness is coming” written in Japanese. The broth is a mix of shoyu and tonkotsu, delivering both salty and savory flavors with pork undertones.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B4TZprhnsMD/

I got Hanamaruken’s Tan Tan Mien (PhP 390). Made with a porky, opaque pale broth, their version of tonkotsu came with a sticky-lipped intensity and tiny nubbins of fat and minced pork swimming around on the surface. Sesame paste and curry tasted great, with tolerable heat. No doubt, this is the ultimate meal-in-a-bowl for me and one of the things I’d think of when you say comfort food.

For our standalone side dishes, we got a serving each of Tiger Prawn Tempura (PhP 580) and Gyoza (PhP 240). The tempura was tagged with a hefty price, but it was worth it! With a gorgeous crunch, it’s one of best tempuras we’ve had. I fell in love with my first bite. 🙂 The freshness of the prawn was so evident, and we thoroughly enjoyed the flavor and natural sweetness that came from it without being distracted by the crispy tempura skin.

Their Gyoza was fine as well but not an absolute must-try. The filling was nicely seasoned and tasted better with the dipping sauce.

    Price for Value:

Hanamaruken Ramen is known for serving bowls of soul-satisfying ramen that bring happiness. Prices are not too friendly to the budget, but patrons don’t mind. The signature taste, aroma, and flavors of each dish drive people to explore more and more into a heavenly happy ramen world. Bring your family here to experience slurp-worthy ramen, and you can’t go wrong. We’re also willing to try their rice bowls next time!

Review of Wangfu Chinese Cafe (Tomas Morato, Quezon City)

Located in Il Terrazzo, Wangfu in Tomas Morato serves Singaporean-Chinese comfort food that’s simple yet incredibly delicious. Walk inside and there’s no mistaking what you’re here for. There are so many different ingredients at play on their menu, and the sum of their parts is outstanding. Since it’s housed in a strip mall, it’s a good place for a casual weeknight dinner or a quick lunch. If you’re in the area craving Singaporean or Chinese food, stop on in! 🙂

Review of Wangfu Chinese Cafe (Tomas Morato, Quezon City)

    Ambiance:

The ambient lighting, the comfortable and chic chairs, the cool palette or grays, orange and crystalline reflections as well as accents make up a casual vibe at Wangfu. This is a Chinese cafe where good conversations, heartfelt laughter, and great moments come to life. I love how the walls were made to look like the exterior of Singaporean shophouses. These cultural features bring the feeling of being transported to Singapore.

    Food:

The Hong Kong Style Pork Chop Rice (PhP 198) came with a generous serving of rice, topped with a cheesy cream sauce and tender pork chops. A very cozy sort of dish.

If you’re ordering a rice bowl, it will be hard to resist the urge to get the Nanyang Milk Tea (served hot or cold) so just let it happen (add P40). The milk tea tastes authentic with just the right balance of milk and tea.

Stir Fried Ramen (PhP 138) was quite enjoyable, with excellent plump and juicy noodles and a nice chewiness.

Salted Egg Fried Squid (PhP 398) demonstrated a mix of crispy and supple textures that played well. Taste was salty and savory yet flavorful you’ll be messaging your friends before you even wipe your fingers off! We’re big fans of this dish.

    Price for Value:

Wangfu in Il Terrazzo delivered pretty much exactly what it advertised: a mash-up of Singaporean-Chinese food favorites that hit the spot. Prices may not be on the cheap side but are reasonable given the quality and tastes of food served. We’re excited to visit for another great meal! Dimsum, Cereal Prawns, Wangfu Hainanese Chicken Rice, and Hong Kong Style Seafood Rice all look awesome on the menu. 🙂

  • Review of Yoshimeatsu (Tomas Morato, Quezon City)

Review of Yoshimeatsu (Tomas Morato, Quezon City)

Craving for Korean bbq and Japanese food at the same time? Yoshimeatsu has your back! This restaurant offers the best of both worlds for a great lunch out with friends or family. I love that it has a clear differentiating factor vs. the usual Korean unli samgyupsal restaurants that line the city. Here you can get unlimited servings of ebi tempura, sushi, and more–on top the fresh meat cuts for grilling on the table—for only P549! 🙂 We had been wanting to try this restaurant for a long time now. Thankfully, the queue wasn’t long when we got there on a weekend, and we were escorted to our seats immediately. Here’s a review of Yoshimeatsu.

    yoshimeatsu in tomas morato

Review of Yoshimeatsu (Tomas Morato, Quezon City)

    Ambiance:

Yoshimeatsu’s interior design and decors aren’t much of a turn-on, but you’re not here for anything except for their fantastic servings of food. The ventilation is quite good but there’s no assurance that you won’t walk out smelling like the intensely smoky meats. The setting is pretty casual, with Korean MTVs (videos of K-pop idols) playing on loop on a TV.

    Service:

Hands down to their super fast and efficient staff! The kitchen prepares orders and releases beautifully plated meat for grilling so the waiters just have to serve them as requested. Customers order through the tablet mounted per table, so there’s no need to desperately call the attention of the busy staff.

We also noticed that this branch of Yoshimeatsu at Tomas Morato employs a lot of staff, so rest assured that you’ll quickly get their attention if needed. Used plates and napkins are out of the table at once, grill is replaced before it gets totally burned, and glasses get refilled with water before you know it.

One thing I also liked about Yoshimeatsu is that all basic orders are already set on the table once the customers arrive. If you’re hungry, you won’t get hangry. 🙂 When someone is celebrating his birthday, the team of staff will harmoniously sing the Happy Birthday song and give out a cake made of stacked sushi. Excellent customer service overall!

    Food:

Yoshimeatsu’s dishes are all pretty good and tasty. Be ready to get smoked and grab some friends to share delicious meats cooked up over charcoal grills. Japanese food staples for the “banchan” make all the difference. The menu features a section of side dishes and another for grilling. We got one of each and later ordered seconds. Our favorites were everything except the sakana tofu, weiner sausage, chicken liver, and pork intestine. It was surprising that their mashed potato was exceptionally good, too.

Here you get to grill your tenderly-marinated meat to your own liking, while indulging in free-flow kani salad, buta dumplings, Kyoto beef roll, spicy tuna maki, ebi tempura, and California maki among others while enjoying Korean kimchi as well. The round barbecue grill has a groove on the outer ring where the server pours beaten egg into the ring for you to cook it just the way you like, runny or firm. The eggs apparently help to soften the spiciness from the meat. Very thoughtful! All meats are already marinated so dipping them into the bean paste or other condiments is optional. Wrap a piece up in a lettuce leaf with some kimchi and you get a full kick of flavors. For dessert, their mango and leche flan soft served ice cream with a cone is also a must-try.
