Review and Ratings of Our Wedding Suppliers (Manila, Philippines)

Choosing your wedding suppliers can be tricky. Discerning the excellent ones from the mediocre can be frustrating, but once done right, it’s another step closer to a memorable wedding day. With proper planning, research, and a solid plan, getting the right supplier or vendor can be a fun and exciting experience. We’ve done our research well and interacted with them enough by phone, email, and personal meetups to make sure we would be comfortable working with them and know their style months leading up to the big day.

Here are their names, contact information, and what we have to say about their services. If you’re planning a wedding, these might serve as a good reference.

    1. Church

    Vendor Name San Agustin Church
Contact Name  Ms. Belen / Ms. Nora
    Contact Number (02) 527 2746
Address General Luna Street, Intramuros, Manila
    Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/pg/Church.SanAgustin/about/?ref=page_internal
Description San Agustin Church is the Philippine’s oldest church, located inside the historic walled city of Intramuros in Manila. It was built in 1571 and was destroyed by a fire twice (in 1574 and 1583). In 1993, San Agustin Church was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, under the collective title Baroque Churches of the Philippines.
    Review and Remarks

San Agustin Church is our first and best option since it’s near our reception venue and hotel and it’s one of the most beautiful churches in Manila. Fortunately, the slot was available for our auspicious wedding date and time. Transactions and guidelines were smooth and efficient.

The wedding package at San Agustin Church is one of the most expensive in Manila but it offers a good value for money. It included the wedding mass and marriage ceremony, flower decorations, royal red carpet, organist and singer, usher and usherettes, altar servers, industrial fans, parking lot for 40 cars, documentation and registration of marriage contract, and stipend for the priest officiating the ceremony. In addition, we also availed of the opening of the doors.

The priest in our wedding ceremony had a clear voice and the homily was not boring. However, he could not pronounce my name right the many names he attempted. It was one of the things that injected some humor during the event.

It was just sad that the church office staff told us prior that rental of Iwata coolers from external suppliers was allowed. On the wedding day, the fans were delivered but were prohibited to be used without a generator which wasn’t mentioned to us before. We already spent thousands for six units and those were only put to waste.

The church coordinators are strict with the photo taking and also strict with time allotted. If you think you need more time for the ceremonial mass and photo-ops, try booking for two slots (two hours) instead but that would entail paying twice the cost.

There were too many tourists outside and people going in and out of the church can’t be controlled. We visited yesterday to attend the wedding of our friend and they already have a large sign stating that tourists could not enter while a wedding is ongoing.

Description Century Seafood Restaurant has been operating for more than 30 years now alongside with their loyal employees and Hong Kong chefs.
    Review and Remarks

There’s no doubt about it. Century Seafood Restaurant is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Manila. We did not have food tasting; we’re sure that they’d provide authentic high quality Chinese-Cantonese food. Our guests were happy and satisfied with the food selection and tastes. We selected a pre-made set menu for their events and occasions and suggested to change only one of the items.

We requested for the food to be served at the Century Park Hotel Grand Ballroom where the reception was held, at no additional charge. Everything turned out fine and without hassle. The venue layout was sent to us early so communication with our event stylist and on-the-day wedding coordinator was also clear.

We booked two rooms in Century Park Hotel for two nights. One room is a suite where my family and I stayed the night before the wedding. It was also where the hair and makeup and pictorial sessions were held in the morning, and the place where some of our relatives and some friends were staged while they’re waiting for the reception to commence. The suite was equipped with the essentials we needed for a flawless stay. The area was spacious to accommodate more than 30 people to sit and chat around.

The other room was where the groom stayed the night before the wedding. It was designed with a touch of simplicity with practical amenities and modern furnishing as well.

It’s convenient for us to stay in the same hotel as the reception venue, so we would not have to travel far and drive long after the celebration.

    Review and Remarks

Everything agreed in the contract was followed and we were constantly in contact with East Digital Studio team from our prenup photoshoot in Bali, Indonesia to the actual wedding day. We had vital pre-wedding warm-up sessions to practice our poses and facial expressions, and we appreciated that our main photographer’s friendly disposition, seemingly infinite supply of energy and undeniable sense of fun allowed us to relax in his company and be our true selves in front of the lens.

Anthony Magana’s effort in photo editing is tremendous especially for printed photo formats. However, turnaround time may be longer. I thought the quality of photos was okay but lacked the real “wow” factor that we expected. What’s commendable was that their team arrived early on the day and was really careful about giving us all the space without missing any important moments.

From the pre-wedding teaser, full prenup video, and same-day edit (SDE) video, the quality of their output was outstanding. I love their journalism style plus special effects. Review and Remarks

We’re very happy with how SMA Weddings and Beyond showcased their professionalism. Sheena and her staff were all friendly, approachable, and helpful. They covered the entire wedding without any big hiccups. We had over 700 guests and we were not at all stressed out about anything.

Sheena is a top-notch coordinator and we’re incredibly lucky to have had her. She made us feel like everything was 100% under control. She also respected our inputs and provided advice based on experience. She managed to collect all the wedding passes for our suppliers and coordinated with them before and after the wedding proper for the disbursement of our final payment as well. Can’t recommend her enough!

There was one helper each assigned to be with the groom and bride in case we needed them to attend to anything. One of the staff helped iron my wedding dress and made some last-minute improvisation to the dress (sewed up the long-back tail) for me to be able to dance well. My eyes were getting dried up because I was wearing contact lenses longer than usual, and he immediately came to the rescue and gave me soft contact lens drops. He’s like godsend.

Sherine did an awesome job hosting our wedding reception. We’re confident we made the right choice! She kept the party flowing and followed the sequence as planned. She has great communication skills as she was able to host in English, Chinese-Mandarin, and Chinese-Fookien naturally. She’s also a good singer and sang three Chinese songs as we requested.

We met her only twice before the wedding to discuss and finalize the order of activities. We strung together a timeline and she contributed good ideas for the games.

    Review and Remarks

From the moment we met Arleen in the wedding expo, she was a like a breath of fresh air buzzing with energy and fantastic ideas about styling and flowers. She gave us a really good rate for the package and their team delivered more than what we expected.

We just chose pegs from pictures of their past events, and the colors and output perfectly matched our ideas. The flowers were freshly delivered to our hotel in the morning and were properly labelled (for the church, for the entourage, the bridal car, the bridal bouquet, etc.).

The team began to set up in the reception venue just in time (60 round tables, long presidential table, partial ceiling draping, stage table, stage backdrop, cake table, arch in the entrance, reception table). Dangwa Florist’s expertise and experience in handling big events is exceptional. Money well spent!

Tip: Remind them of their deliverables as they have the tendency to forget some details prior the actual day. They’re quite responsive to calls and they make the necessary adjustments quickly.

Louie found Velvet Mood in forums as it received praises from other wedding couples as well. We were provided with links of their performances on YouTube videos and we liked them. Their jazz sextet was great. The vocalists received a lot of compliments from guests. This shortly explains how they managed to create the perfect mood with tunes people recognize and enjoy.

The best thing was that we did not have to worry about the number of songs and song choices. They performed unlimited songs throughout the party and we just gave them a short list of songs we preferred.

Velvet Mood also participated during a “Singing Bee” contest which we held as games during the reception.

When it comes to Chinese weddings, JL Lights & Sounds is one the most prominent lights & sounds supplier. It’s the dad’s of Michael Lim (fashionpulis). They’re considered the expert in the service and they’re able to give out reasonable packages to clients.

James and Melvin are easy to talk to but they’re quite hard to reach through mobile phone (maybe because they’re too busy).

I didn’t have working knowledge on the specifications of a sound and light system that’s required in events. We just trusted that the rented units (plus laptops and LED walls) would suffice and we would be assisted as necessary. We didn’t encounter any booboos with JL, and the price we paid already included the hotel electricity fee.

We got their promo package which included airbrush makeup for the bride and moms, grooming for the groom, traditional makeup for four people and one flower girl. They also styled our hair (free hair accessory for the bride) and did unlimited makeup retouch plus a second look for hair and makeup on the reception.

My mom was very particular with the kind of hairstyle they’d do for me and they were able to execute well according to the peg provided. I liked the simple and natural look of bridal makeup. The products used were of good quality and my skin did not break out afterwards.

However, the eyeliner wasn’t budge-proof. My eyes were blackened even before the wedding ceremony started. Joy’s assistant helped to get rid of the smudges but it took a while to enhance the look and bring it back to perfection.

The mascara and false eyelashes smeared and flaked off after the wedding. Since they weren’t the most reliable, I opted to remove them before the reception. Else, it was difficult to see things clearly with something that was like blocking my vision.

JAD Makeup Atelier was responsive and worked on comments and suggestions from the other members of my entourage who had their makeup on.

My mom found John Sicat through OLX and chose him because he’s staying Binondo just near our home. John is an experienced professional dancer and he’s also teaching dance choreography in a TV network. He teaches jazz, hiphop, modern, retro, contemporary, Zumba, swing, tango, ballroom, cotillion, and first dance in weddings.

We met for three practice sessions and completed a four-minute dance. They also did the song remix for the father and daughter dance and the bride and groom’s first dance. They chose the songs for our approval and edited some parts of the music to fit the choreography as well. Total is four songs.

The husband-and-wife team of John Sicat was great. They’re friendly and nice, and they showed a strong sense of professionalism. They’re creative with variations of dance moves which would be suitable for us.

    Review and Remarks

There are several bridal gown stalls in 168 Mall but what made me choose Kryzet Bridal Collection was that Agnes, the attendant/consultant, explained to us on how they produce tailor-made couture-style gowns from boning to hems and bustles. The owner used to work for popular Filipino wedding gown designer Francis Libiran, so we could expect almost the same quality and nice design without having to break the bank.

I printed pages of design pegs from online sites and was impressed with their craftsmanship. There were a few alterations with the size since I gained a few pounds three months after the time they noted my body measurements. My wedding dress arrived cleanly packaged with the accessories and double petticoats for a fuller effect. The stitching was very clean. The interior had great boning and the corset and crinoline were well done.

For my bridesmaids, maid of honor, and secondary sponsors, I was also happy that their dresses were custom-fitted. The designs were based on Yesstyle.com. The custom elements including hand-stitched lacework, straps, and sequins used to complete the dresses were all pretty good.

Instead of the usual photo booth, we acquired the service of roving photo men to capture best moments during the wedding reception. We had over 700 guests, and it would be a waste of time for them to queue up to get their photos taken. The photo men went table to table and also took pictures of us on the stage and on the dance floor.

The PhotoMan is a photographer with two printers mounted on his back. We had two photo men who instantly printed the photos and gave them to the guests. We then could physically see and hold the memories in our hands and also view them on Facebook a few days later. What’s also very unique with their offering was that they allowed unlimited printing of pictures just as we requested for them even after the event—for free.

The design of the photo pages was customized for us in line with the theme of the event. They produced a combination of real time captures layered with artwork which set the mood which was distinctively ours. Excellent service! Our guests were very satisfied.

We chose the design based on a booklet of the cakes they designed. Our wedding cake was made with red velvet and chocolate chiffon that was delicious. Other flavor choices available were banana, carrot, and vanilla. The cake tasted the same as we first tried it, without being too sugary or oily. It turned out moist, fluffy, and an absolute delight. We definitely recommend!

  • 3 Lessons Learned While Wedding Planning

3 Lessons Learned While Wedding Planning

I’m not one of those brides who almost hold an honorary degree in hot mess while planning their wedding. In contrast, I was just calm about the whole process and we managed to knock out the entire wedding plan to the last detail in just a few months. Being a complete perfectionist is a recipe for insanity, so we didn’t completely go that route but had fun deciding priorities and working them out.

In this post, I’ll be sharing the things I learned while we were planning our wedding as a reference to brides and grooms-to-be and as a way of documenting my reflection. Today marks 1 year 6 months and 18 days since we got started with our DIY wedding planning. I look back on our wedding day with amazing memories. There were a few misses, but these were heavily outweighed by the good and were nothing in comparison to the overall success of our celebration with friends and family.

3 Lessons Learned While Wedding Planning

    1. Know what you want and get your plans executed right.

Planning a wedding is not as easy as pie, but it’s doable even if you’re still working full-time in your respective day jobs or businesses, if you have a plan and keep at it. Both Louie and I are wired with an achiever mentality and a desire for efficiency. Even while planning our wedding, this was very apparent.

On our first two months of preparation, we went to at least three bridal fairs to book services at a discount and met with our suppliers during the weekends. All the major details were done and decided for on the third month, so we had the time to slow down and take off our “superman/superwoman” cape in all the days remaining before our wedding day.

The key is to have a solid plan, a checklist of items, thoroughly agree on the specifications of requirements with suppliers, and exchange approval signatures in the contract to secure deals. Giving constant reminders and follow-ups are also important.

    2. Get support from family and friends when needed.

Balancing wedding preparations with work and my personal life did not tire us out. This was not only because of our fast head-start and diligence in taking notes down, but also because we had a great support system. Doing it on my own would have been nearly impossible.

I can’t express enough how thankful I was to have my mom step in and help me address the gowns for the entourage and garments for the primary sponsors. She had to go to the stall in 168 where we had the dresses made several times to check up on progress and accommodate the fitting of the entourage. She also managed to do the paperwork (documents needed for marriage) and guided us through the steps and actions we needed to take.

    3. Simplify wherever you can.

I love working on details, especially those that demand attention. However, right from the start, I also learned from others not to get lost too much in the details and lose sight of the spirit you want to create. Hence, in every idea, ask if there’s any way it can be made simpler.

Napkins on the reception table, wedding favors and souvenirs, cake decorations, types of flowers, menu cards, and guestbook designs—are some examples of things that won’t be remembered too long after the event. Let these things fall to the wayside and just focus on those that have greater value. What guests will care about for the most part would be the food, ambiance, entertainment, the ways you make them feel welcome and the very spirit of the wedding day. Don’t sweat the small stuff!

In our case, we spent the most time choosing the best wedding vendors who would make all our plans come to life and bring our dream wedding to reality. And they did. 🙂 The second part of this post covers my review and rating of the suppliers we worked with. Click here.

I hope you’ve found this post helpful! If you have any questions, please do let us know in the comments. Have you got any more advice or tips when planning a wedding or choosing or working with wedding vendors? I’d also love to hear from you.

  • Grand Launch of Fredley Banawe Complex (Banawe, Quezon City)

Grand Launch of Fredley Banawe Complex (Banawe, Quezon City)

Fredley Food and Beverages, Inc. has been introducing exciting food concepts for the past four years. This year, they’re proud to have built their own complex with three of their brands—Macao Imperial Tea, Shabu-shabu Ichiban, and Mitasu Charcoal Yakiniku—all housed at Fredley Banawe Complex. Today was the grand launch, and we were honored to take part in the event, witness the ribbon cutting ceremony, and try out their food specialties.

    Macao Imperial Tea Philippines

As one of the fastest-growing cafe chains that’s proudly born in Macau, Macao Imperial Tea takes a deeply-rooted approach that highlights a mix of the rich Macanese culture and a personalized experience. Genuine, memorable, and special—this is what Macao Imperial Tea brings in each and every cup that’s especially made for their customers’ satisfaction. This cafe brought massive hype to social media with its cute tumblers and unique drinks. When we visited for the first time, I thought it’s very much worthy of the praise.

The vibe was charming and the location seemed apt as a hangout place for friends to spend hours enjoying drinks and pastries over a nice chat. Macao Imperial Tea in Banawe is open from 7am to 12mn, so you can be sure you won’t miss out.

Their menu is filled with interesting options such as chestnut cream, milk tea, coffee and quirky drinks like Kitten Milk Tea, Ginger Milk Tea, Walnut Black Sesame Fresh Milk, and Taro Sweet Potato Fresh Milk. I was truly spoiled for choice and then just asked the staff for best recommendations. We ended up trying their best-sellers, Chestnut Cream Cocoa (PhP 130) and Cream Cheese Oreo Milk Tea (PhP 120), and liked them both. A lot. I’m telling you, it’s a must-try!

Topped with a creamy cheese foam made with whipped cream, milk and cream cheese, the drinks were both salty and sweet at the same time. Taste was simply exquisite, and thickness was decadent. Sipping straight from the cup without stirring and without a straw is recommended. 🙂 The drinks were also chocolatey, with the right amount of cream cheese bursting with complex flavor in every gulp. We also shared a piece of their almond chocolate cookie and loved it, too!

    Shabu-shabu Ichiban

Shabu-shabu Ichiban is a popular hotpot restaurant from Nagoya, Japan. It gives patrons an authentic Japanese hotpot experience by providing plenty of interesting soup base options and unlimited servings of meat, sushi, and king crab. Like Chinese hot pot, Japanese shabu-shabu is also communal. Not only do you sit down to eat with all your companions, but you cook the food together in the same pot of simmering broth.

Shabu-shabu Ichiban offers a reasonably priced and delicious introduction to a golden meal. This Japanese restaurant in Banawe has all-you-can-eat and a la carte options available on the menu. Overall, food is great, generous in servings, and you definitely won’t sit through your meal hungry. Indulging in Japanese shabu-shabu is good way to bond with the family or celebrate an occasion.

We each had Set B (Weekdays: PhP 688 lunch, PhP 788 dinner; Weekends and Holidays: PhP 888) which was quite a mouthful. It consisted of: Sushi and Sashimi Platter, Vegetable Platter, US Angus Chuck Eye Roll, US Beef Short Plate, Boston Butt (Pork Shoulder), Chicken Leg Quarter, Chicken and Pork Dumplings, Assorted Balls, Shrimp Tempura, Fried Chicken Wings, Kushikatsu, Udon and Ramen Noodles, Dessert (Coffee Jelly), and Drinks. The soup bases we chose (tantan and spicy szechuan) were both spicy broths, perfect for the cold, rainy weather.

The broth was nowhere near as complex as ramen soup bases in Japanese ramen restaurants, but we dropped in udon and ramen noodles anyway since hotpot broth always develops more flavor as you cook various items in it. The noodles took seconds to cook, the fatty cuts of meat required just a quick dip, and the assorted balls and fish cakes benefited from a longer soak.

Thankfully, the settings on the in-table induction plate were carefully controlled by the staff. Just as we were getting into the hotpot groove, we also had bites of the remarkably greaseless tempura, sushi, and fried chicken in between. Yum! 🙂

    Mitasu Charcoal Yakiniku

After eating loads of food, we figured we have to return for another visit to Fredley Banawe Complex to experience their yakiniku special next time. Otherwise, we could have left bloated instead of pleasantly full. 😛

Sharing the same space as Shabu-shabu Ichiban, Mitasu Charcoal Yakiniku is the newest concept among the three, offering authentic Japanese Yakiniku. A Japanese term for “fulfill,” Mitasu is said to live up to its name with the many kinds of Japanese favorites that will certainly leave a lasting impression. If you’re looking to get fancy with Japanese Yakiniku in Banawe, this is where you do it.

4 Places To Visit In China

China is an enormous country, but one that’s surprisingly boiled down to just a few attractions all too often. Everyone wants to see the Great Wall for example, and the major cities more or less speak for themselves. I would absolutely support the idea of touring all of these legendary areas. But the idea here is to also give some space to places to visit that don’t get as much attention.

    Leshan Giant Buddha

Most people who have an inkling of Chinese culture are familiar with the idea of statues of the Buddha. We see them in all shapes and sizes, sometimes as small tokens or ornaments for people’s homes, sometimes in Chinese restaurants around the world, and sometimes in photos of Chinese temples or monuments. But the Leshan Giant Buddha, remarkably, doesn’t seem to be particularly well known among China’s attractions.

Carved into cliffs by the river at Leshan (south of Chengdu), this is a sitting statue that was built in the 1st century A.D. It stands some 70 meters high and can be viewed from below or from near the top, as visitors are able to climb up staircases built into the cliffs. Seeing it in person it’s hard to believe such a statue was carved so long ago.

    Dujiangyan Panda Base

We imagine pandas in all kinds of ways, both realistic and otherwise. From a fictional standpoint, we think of them with regard to things like the animated film Kung Fu Panda and numerous online games that involve panda characters. One of these games, called “100 Pandas” and comprising one of the internet’s largest slot reels, also hints at a more natural way to imagine pandas: relaxing to the soothing sounds of the Chinese jungle and viewing them in their natural habitat.

The Dujiangyan Panda Base an hour or so outside the city of Chengdu is probably different than anything you’ve imagined, fictional or otherwise. Here you’ll see pandas up close and personal, and you can actually assist their handlers in caring for them. It’s a wonderfully unique activity, and a way to enjoy perhaps China’s greatest natural treasure: the giant panda.

    Yuangyang Rice Terraces

There are other places in the world where the rice terraces are often mentioned among the best attractions. The most prominent example would probably be Vietnam. However, the Yuangyang Rice Terraces in the Yunnan province are an incredible sight to behold in China. You may know how rice terraces in general tend to appear, as shelf-like tiers crafted into the sides of mountains and hills. But at Yuangyang in particular, the terrace layers are known for filling up with water and creating an altogether different (and arguably more beautiful) sort of sight.

    Hongcun Ancient Village

If you want a feel for the sheer age of Chinese culture, this is a must-see destination. CNN actually listed it first in a piece on beautiful places to see in China, and tabbed the striking Huangshan mountain backdrop as its second item. Hongcun is a 900-year-old village and is still inhabited. Visitors can enjoy the old, distinctive architecture, the calming atmosphere surrounding the town’s lake, and the locals to whom the village is simply home.

  • Philippines’ Best All-Inclusive Vacation Spots

    Philippines’ Best All-Inclusive Vacation Spots

Often times when you hear about the Philippines in the news, the images presented is of a poverty stricken, undeveloped country. While sadly this is true to some extent, it also gives foreigners quite a distorted idea of what the country is like. Too many times I hear people say ” I really want to go there for my honeymoon since the beaches are so beautiful, but I don’t want to sleep at a hut with no electricity or running water.”

Little do people know that the Philippines’ economy is steadily on the rise, and there’s no other sector where this is evidenced more than the tourism industry. Admittedly, there’s still a long way to go, but since developing countries mainly rely on foreign money coming in – the tourism sector has been getting a lot of attention by the both the government and private investors.

So, nowadays you can easily have a luxurious all-inclusive holiday in the Philippines, without fearing your standards won’t be met. Sure, it’s still not as fancy as the Maldives or even Thailand and Bali, but on the flip side you’ll be paying much less and be able to enjoy attractions without running into large crowds. Here are my top 5 Philippines destinations for an all inclusive vacation, along with some thoughts about what makes each stand out.

    Philippines’ Best All-Inclusive Vacation Spots

    1. Palawan

Anyone who’s planning a luxury vacation in the Philippines can’t afford to skip Palawan. Being one of the best islands in the world, it’s also the quintessential definition of a pampering island getaway. This is as close as you’ll get to a Maldives-like experience, as hotel standards and quality of service are truly exceptional.

Some private island resorts can cost up to 600 USD a night, but they are well worth it. It’s still much less than you’d pay anywhere else in the world for 5 star beach resorts. If you book one of these, they’ll take care of literally your entire stay in Palawan. Not only will you get to enjoy the hotel’s amenities and activities, but they’ll also organize day tours and visits to mainland attractions for you.

El Nido has the widest selection of such resorts, and is a popular destination for couples who seek the perfect romantic setting for their honeymoon. From your resort there, you can go on island hopping and diving trips to some of the most beautiful locations in the world. Or, you could just stay at the resort’s private beach area and enjoy a pampering massage or a fancy cocktail. Another option is to venture further north to Coron – which is just as beautiful but much less crowded. Over there, you could stay at the Two Seasons Coron – one of the most luxurious resorts in the country.

    2. Boracay

Along with Palawan, Boracay is undoubtedly the most popular tourist destination in the Philippines. This is mainly thanks to its highly acclaimed White Beach strip – widely considered to be among the best beaches in the whole world. With no less than 500 different hotels and resorts to choose from – it’s quite easy to find a place to stay at, but just as easy to make the wrong choice.

Honestly, I don’t think Boracay is the best place for an all inclusive vacation. Most 5 star resorts there are notorious tourist traps – they claim to offer one thing then once you get there you get another. Overall service and attention to small details is quite sloppy, and it can leave you quite disappointed and ruin what could otherwise be a wonderful vacation.

If you really want to be right at next to the beach – picking a 4 or 5 star resort in the Station 1 area is fine. Don’t expect the same standards as you’ll have anywhere else in the Philippines though, these aren’t world class resorts by any means. The only good thing about this resorts is they are quite cheap and you shouldn’t pay more than $150 a night if you scout for deals, since the competition there is so fierce and drive the rates way down. If prices are all similar, my choice would be one of the Henann chain resorts – these usually maintain a decent standard and never disappoint.

To me, the only hotel in Boracay which is really high end is the Boracay Shangri-La. It’s located near Puka beach at the northern tip of the island, but has its own private beach. The Shangri-La is a well established chain and have an excellent reputation, with their Boracay branch being the crown jewel. Being a bit off the main tourist area is actually a good since Boracay is such a small island anyway. You’ll get to avoid the hordes of loud tourists, but if you want to enjoy the nightlife it’s always just a 10-minute drive.

    3. Cebu

Cebu City is the second largest city in the Philippines and the main entry point to Cebu Island and the Visayas area in general. The city itself is worth spending a day at, as there are quite a lot of historical landmarks to visit and the nightlife is pretty good. Visiting the Santo Niño Basilica is recommend, especially if you’re lucky enough to be there during local fiestas.

Cebu City has a lot of good hotels to pick from, and it’s most sensible to stick the large, better known names such as Radisson Blu or the Marriott hotel. These are top of the line hotels for what will most likely be the cheapest you’ll ever pay for such – prices can be as low as $50 a night!

Those who prefer to stay away from the city and by the beach should head to Mactan instead. This small island is connected to the city by a bridge, and is also where the Cebu Airport is located. Over there, you’ll be able to find plenty of 5 star beach resorts. Mactan is also the jumping point to some of the best island hopping tours in the Philippines.

If you got the time, it’s really worth it to spend a few days exploring the whole Cebu island. Places such as Kawasan Falls, Moalboal and Oslob are all worth a visit. However, none of these locations offer any high level hotels, so if you really mind that you should just set your base in Mactan and visit them all as part of the day tour out of Cebu. My recommendation would be to book these as part of a Cebu travel package, and have everything already taken care of once you get there.

    4. Bohol

Bohol island is only an hour by boat from Cebu, but it’s considered such a tourist hotspot on its own accord that it’s worth a separate mention. Panglao area has some of the nicest beaches in the Philippines who rival even those of Boracay. Most notable is Alona beach – where all 5 star resorts are to be found.

Unlike Boracay, Bohol’s vibe is very laid back and attractions revolve around diving and nature instead of nightlife and extreme watersports. Accommodation levels are roughly the same though, not the highest you can find but certainly reasonable. Again, my choice would be Henann resort, but if you can find a better deal for some other luxury hotel then go for that instead – the standards are all roughly the same.

Bohol’s main attraction is the Chocolate Hills – more than 1200 hills in different shapes and sizes. Taking the ATV ride and then climbing to view deck is highly recommend and makes for a great day trip from your resort. You can easily do this day tour out of Cebu as well – so it is possible to spend just a day in Bohol before going back to your Mactan resort.

    5. Manila

Many people think Manila is chaotic and dirty, and try to get away from it as quickly as they can. It’s hard to blame them, as this busy metropolitan can seem very unwelcoming at first glance. But once you scratch the surface a bit, you realize this city also holds an endless amount of possibilities, especially for those who appreciate the finer things in life.

Manila is where you’d find the best restaurants, nightclubs and shows. Hotels in Makati are generally very good – with many different 5 star hotels to choose from. It might be a surprise, but Solaire Casino resort is probably the best hotel in the Philippines. It’s also a good choice if you want to take a tour of the old city since it’s quite near.

Once you had enough of the city itself, there’s no shortage of exciting opportunities at nearby locations. One option is visiting Tagaytay and spending a night at the Taal Vista hotel – another fantastic all inclusive hotel. Tagaytay is a mountain ridge overlooking a lake with a volcano at its center – some of the most breathtaking views you’ll ever see. If you are eager to visit the beach, the best option would be Laiya in Batangas which is only 2 hours away from the city, and has some of the best beach resorts.

  • Review of Alice Tea Salon (The Pearl Place, Ortigas, Pasig City)

Review of Alice Tea Salon (The Pearl Place, Ortigas, Pasig City)

I’m a big fan of Alice in Wonderland, so when I heard about Alice Tea Salon which opened up recently in Ortigas, I knew we definitely had to visit it right away. 🙂 Talk about fantasy dining. We love quirky venues that scream unique individuality. Alice Tea Salon in The Pearl Place is an Alice in Wonderland-themed cafe filled with a combination of baby blue and white colors as inspired by Alice’s dress and quotes such as “Drink Me” and “We’re All Mad Here.” Here you may find a simple scenery of the world of Alice once you pass the charmingly designed-card door representing the Red Queen.

Review of Alice Tea Salon (The Pearl Place, Ortigas, Pasig City)

    Ambiance:

There was an ongoing baby shower party when we arrived, and the event occupied half of the place. Fortunately, we were still allowed to get in and have our own “fairy tale” experience. This place is a hidden gem that brings Mad Hatter’s eternal tea damnation to life with their Alice in Wonderland-themed interior and tea-centric menu. Alice Tea Salon conveys a clean layout with familiar features straight from Alice in Wonderland. From its porch, the red two-door Queen of Hearts embellished with card suits, to their black and white tiled floors and classy interior, it definitely is the perfect space for Instagram-worthy photos!

    Food/Drinks:

A tea party isn’t complete without the tea. Alice Tea Salon offers various types of tea (hot and cold are both available) brewed using an espresso machine with tea leaves sourced from Taiwan. Their bestselling variant is roasted oolong tea, and other original tea recommendations include English Breakfast, Earl Gray, Assam, and Darjeeling tea. They also offer sweet and delicious beverages like tea lattes, tea-based milkshakes, ice cream smoothies, and con pannas that don’t disappoint as well.

We tried Hot Wintermelon Macchiato (PhP 145), Strawberry Choco Smoothie (PhP 170), and Ruby Cappuccino (PhP 110). To match with the drinks and satisfy our sweet tooth, we had Ube Cheesecake (PhP 150) and Lemon Bars (PhP 50) which were also theme-appropriate. The ube cheesecake is a winner. The graham bottom worked as a natural pairing to the lushness of ube cream cheese. The delightfully nutty crust added a moderating element and some textural variation. 🙂 The tart, fruity flavor of lemon in the lemon bar was also much appreciated.

    Price for Value:

We had a lovely time at Alice Tea Salon. The ambiance is quite enjoyable and service is on-point, too. It matched my expectation for sure. Prices are fair, not exceedingly higher or lower than the usual cafe or coffee shop in Metro Manila. This is a good place to stay all afternoon while chatting with friends. It’s just a few minutes of walking away from EDSA Shangri-la Hotel, Shangri-la Mall, and SM Megamall.

  • Review of Downtown and Halsted (Bonifacio Global City, Taguig)

Review of Downtown and Halsted (Bonifacio Global City, Taguig)

When searching for where to eat in BGC, the term “destination restaurants” comes up a lot. This means that the food must be killer, the vibe is close to perfect, and the space is worth sitting an hour at. If you want all these, check out Downtown and Halsted. Stylized as DWNTOWN & HALSTED, this edgy bar-restaurant was conceptualized by Perry Quimbo (Piedra, Dillingers, Prohibition, Bugsy’s, Red Rabbit).

Dinner was booked through BigDish’s app, and we had an instant discount off our meal. In case you’re not yet familiar, BigDish is a brand-new way of offering dining deals and discounts. There’s no membership fee required. Just reserve online (through the website or mobile app) and get discounts off your bill depending on the number of people, date and time, and the restaurant chosen. Once booking is done, a confirmation code will show up and this should be presented to the restaurant at the time of visit. No hassle!

Review of Downtown and Halsted (Bonifacio Global City, Taguig)

    Ambiance:

Downtown and Halsted is envisioned as an avenue where artists could showcase their work, hence it’s flush with Deviant art, urban photographs, sketches, and other artwork featured throughout the place. Adding these pop-art vibes on the walls brings in unconventional style and evokes the feel of the street. These pieces on nondescript backdrops create a cohesive interior concept with urban flair.

Overall, I love the theme and the spacious layout. Each booth provides privacy for every group, resulting in less chaotic seating and creating more intimate and functional zones. However, I just can’t imagine how the setup could accommodate larger groups of diners. You can be spotted sitting on the bar stools or on the comfy quilted restaurant booth seating.

    Food:

We had Baby Calamari with Salted Egg Aioli (PhP 190) as our first starter dish. It consisted of bite-sized squid in crispy batter, basically everything you’d want in a weeknight seafood dish. These baby calamari came out stunningly golden-brown and still so tender and light inside. The salted egg aioli wasn’t too flavorful but it wasn’t bad. A nice squeeze of lemon and a sprinkling of salt would make it better.

The Buffalo Tenders (PhP 290) were full-on crisp, crackly, ever-so-slightly greasy, perfectly juicy and succulent. Its accompanying dip was a great complement to the sauce-coated, tangy, vinegary buffalo perfection in every lick-lipping, finger-dripping bite. It’s enough to warm up your palate for the next to come.

Their Housemade Chili Topped Potato Skins (PhP 150) were definitely a winner. It was so good that we kept talking about how we could replicate the recipe and make it at home ourselves! The earthy and slightly salty taste of the potato skin was delightful, and the chunky chili con carne packed a good deal of spice. This appetizer (for sharing) was well executed, no doubt.

Downtown and Halsted’s Skewer Platter had sweet and savory profiles consisting of Lengua (PhP 250), Chicken (PhP 150), and Pork (PhP 150). These skewers delivered a good blend between tenderness and depth of flavor, with no sauce required.

Probably our favorite main course, the insanely delicious Braised Barbecued Short Ribs (PhP 750) possessed a flesh that was tender and fatty but not overwhelmingly so. It’s one of the most comforting of comfort foods, with mashed potatoes served alongside it. Full of beefy flavor, the braised barbecued short ribs were far from dry. Adding points of interest were the crisp veggies on top. A must-order!

The Crispy Pork Knuckles (PhP 580) were wonderfully crispy, yet fatty, with melt-in-your-mouth goodness. The meat had a pleasant firm texture, and it was paired well with the vinegar sauce, which gave each forkful of pork a tartness that really worked. It’s a dignified centerpiece for just about any table, something your taste buds will treasure for a while.

    Price for Value:

Sitting alongside Locavore, Frank & Dean, and Bugsy’s Bar & Bistro in Burgos Circle, Downtown & Halsted in BGC dishes up the kind of trendy cuisine with tasty presentations that hit the comfort-food sweet spot we have. It serves designer cocktails, wines, with a good selection of single malts, bourbon, a huge dose of good music and fun, too. Prices are reasonable for the given value, and they’re not shockingly high, to be fair. Book a reservation now through BigDish (link here) to get discounts up to 50%!

  • Review of Yayoi Philippines (SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City)

Review of Yayoi Philippines (SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City)

Beyond sushi and sashimi, there are far more interesting dishes that Japanese restaurants offer. One such must-try meal is “Teishoku” 定食, which Yayoi takes pride in. Teishoku is a type of Japanese set meal, where all of the dishes in the course are served together as a set. Teishoku dining is based on the ichiju-issai (or “one soup, one side”) traditional meals offered at Zen temples, which included a main, soup, rice, and pickles. The concept eventually spread throughout Japan and transformed into the convenient meal sets found at restaurants and cafeterias today.

Yayoi Philippines in SM Megamall Building B has just celebrated its first-year anniversary last September 16, 2017. We were one of the many customers who availed of their “buy one take one of teishoku” promotion that was valid only on that day, “Yayoi Teishoku Day,” as it was called.

Review of Yayoi Philippines (SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City)

    Ambiance:

The vibe was buzzing and the venue was packed with quite a lot of people, but noise level was tolerable. For the most part, Yayoi’s ambiance conveys clean lines and abundant lighting, and the palette is inspired by wood. Revealing a zen-like appeal with sleek, minimalist style with no superfluous decorations, neutral, subtle colors throughout the restaurant were pleasing and easy to the eyes. Walls were creamy white with wooden panel accents.

    Service:

Since it was their anniversary day, operations looked very busy. The queue of customers outside was long, but it moved quickly since service was fast and efficient. The ordering process was a product of innovation. Customers choose food and drinks and submit their selections through an iPad. A few presses on the screen and a confirmation message will appear.

There’s no need to ask for the staff; they’ll serve the dishes momentarily on the table, and then come back later to process the bill when customers press on the “Pay Now” button. The menu on the iPad comes in English and Japanese languages. A physical menu is also available for less “techie” customers.

    Food:

Common types of teishoku include tonkatsu (pork cutlet), yakizakana (grilled fish), and tempura (deep-fried battered fish and vegetables). We decided to try Yayoi’s best-sellers. Here’s the food rundown:

Sukiyaki Teishoku (PhP 595) was presented as beef hotpot with assorted vegetables stewed in teriyaki sauce. The slices of beef or the noodles were the main event, but the accompaniments (tofu, mushrooms, and miso soup) were equally upstanding. The sweetness of sukiyaki and teriyaki sauce and the savoriness of beef came together as basically more a feeling than a flavor. Adding beaten egg to the beef was part of the enjoyment.

Mix Toji Teishoku (PhP 475) is a mix of everything you would describe as Japanese comfort food: breaded pork loin, fried shrimp and sukiyaki beef simmered in special sauce and egg. I love how each piece had its own integrity and flavor. The sauce was rich and just gloriously creamy. Delicious.

Namban Teishoku (PhP 450) is a succulent chicken dish drizzled with special sauce and topped with Yayoi dressing. The fried chicken steak was amazing with the crispy skin combined with the meat. If you feel like it, place the chicken on the lettuce leaves and you’ve got a nice chicken salad!

Teriyaki Salmon Teishoku (PhP 595) was served with stir-fried salmon and vegetables with teriyaki sauce. When it comes to teriyaki salmon, I like the glaze sweet enough to cut through some of the fattiness of the fish. Sadly though, the pieces of salmon were neither juicy nor moist but too dried up for my liking (might have been a bit overcooked).

    Price for Value:

Our dining experience at Yayoi in SM Megamall wasn’t life-changing, but overall it was satisfactory. You’ll be glad to know that they don’t skimp on the good stuff. Their #YAYfor1 promotion was a great deal! If you’re into Japanese food, you’ll love it here. Stick to their teishoku and you’ll be in good shape. Food tastes and quality of dishes served are worth the prices, with discount or without. 🙂
