Anatomy of KTG Mooncake Festival + Dice Game 2014

It’s that time of the year again when we play the dice game and eat mooncakes in honor and in celebration of the Mid-autumn Harvest or Mooncake Festival (中秋节). In the Philippines, this is popular among Filipino-Chinese communities. Many years back, we used have to hopia and mooncakes (月饼) as prizes in the mooncake dice game (pua tiong chiu). Now we have plenty of variety of prizes ranging from food, fancy pen and paper, to just about everything the event hosts and organizers can think of! It’s good to have more options than grow tired of eating the same traditional mooncake every time.

Last week, I was invited by Richie to join the KTG Mooncake Festival + Dice Game in Astoria Plaza, Escriva Drive, Pasig. KTG means Kain Tulog Gang (Eat Sleep Gang)a. k. a. “many of the country’s top food bloggers.” I’m not sure if they mean it in the literal sense. 😛 At least for myself, I’d like to think that there’s more WORK happening in between. Haha! Anyway, I knew it was going to be fun so I came. ☆完美的一天!☆

Anatomy of KTG Mooncake Festival + Dice Game 2014

September 6, 2014—Everyone was excited to play the mooncake dice game. More than playing though, I felt that everyone was excited to eat. Why not? There’s lots of food to indulge in, thanks to our loving sponsors:

Packed dinner of Beef Pot Roast with Buttered Vegetables from GraceY’.s Gourmet Kitchen c/o Grace Yambao-Go

15 boxes of Chewy Buns and Beef Pastry Puff Canape from Orange Whisk Restaurant and Patisserie c/o Korinne Lirio

2 special boxes of Mooncakes from Makati Shangri-La, Manila

2 special boxes of Mooncakes and 40 mini pieces snow skin for dessert from Spring by Ha Yuan PLUS GCs totaling PhP 6,000

15 packs of assorted Jam Foods Angus Tapa worth over PhP 2000 each from Michelle Navarro Cu-Unjieng

15 packs of Chorizo De Cebu Philippines from Kevin Vitug

15 boxes of Kat’s Café cupcakes from Katrece Gamo

Dessert buffet from My Pink Wasabi c/o Anna Chua

Lechon Degustacion at Pepita’s Kitchen with SUPER SUMAN from Dedet Dela Fuente

Pork Belly by Diplahan Lechon from Benjamin Abelarde

After dinner, Ahia Richard asked us to pick a number to indicate our grouping and order in the dice game. We were over 30 people in one room so we divided ourselves into two tables. For the benefit of first-timers, he also explained the rules on how to play (you may read it here). Basically, each player gets to roll six dice. The different combinations will result in different prizes.

I picked 15A (table A number 15)—which happened to be a really unfortunate number! I think I took home the least number of prizes. Yes, I couldn’t believe it myself. 😆

The dice game gets repetitive but the thrill of winning loads of prizes in every round by luck keeps the fun and excitement going. From rolling winning dice combinations, Sumi and Kathi won as “chong-guan” in our table, while Chef Anna won as the grand prize winner in theirs. 🙂

With good company, good food and fun prizes, everyone had a great time and went home feeling like a winner. Congratulations to all! 祝大家中秋节快乐。 但愿人长久,千里共婵娟!

  • Review of Princess Hazel Salon & Spa (Pacific Century Tower, Quezon Avenue)

Review of Princess Hazel Salon & Spa (Pacific Century Tower, Quezon Avenue)

At the end of a hectic work week, wouldn’t you want to wind down and relax in a quiet spot, enjoying the serenity as time goes by? Borne out of such belief, mom and I went to Princess Hazel Salon & Spa along Quezon Avenue last Saturday for a mother and daughter bonding time to flee away from reality.

Review of Princess Hazel Salon & Spa (Pacific Century Tower, Quezon Avenue)

    Ambiance: ★★★★★

Juxtaposed against the bustling streets of Quezon City along Quezon Avenue, this beauty center has an ambiance that makes up for an immediate chance in mood as you step through its door. The details and props in display renders you to slow down and take a second look. Accessories for a darling princess and everything for a girly girl are all arranged neatly on shelves by the entrance.

Past the reception area, gold and purple chairs and stacks of branded nail polish colors welcome customers abound. These are definitely more than what I expected to find in a normal salon. Walking further, we found a vanity dresser with lights and the chandelier catching our attention spot on. I like to have this room in our home! Princess Hazel Salon & Spa is very clean, comfortable and stylish.

    Service: ★★★★★

We came by reservation as Princess Hazel Salon & Spa prefers it that way rather than walk-ins. Especially during weekends, they have a long list of customers whose names are already listed as expected to come by. Walk-in customers are often advised to visit on another day if there’s no open slot.

I stated my name and we were led to the area specific to where the services would be done: hair spa for me and manicure + pedicure for my mom. The ends of my hair are dry, but I don’t want to have my hair cut anytime soon. Hair spa must be the perfect treatment to have better nutrition and smoothness to the hair. As much as it improves blood circulation, hair spa is also a good instant remedy to remove mental stress and worldly tensions. Hair results to be delivered beautifully without tangles.

The staff first washed my hair then applied the L’Oreal hair spa cream. She massaged my scalp, spread the cream evenly on the hair strands and set the timer to 20 minutes. The product used was enriched with cooling menthol that’s able to free the scalp as well from impurities like sweat, sebum and dandruff. While waiting, I received a nice back massage to soothe my uber tired and stiff muscles. It was relaxing! 🙂 When time was up, the staff rinsed my hair and used a hair dryer to get my hair dry fast. It was another good experience overall.

Mom was also satisfied with the ORLY Green Apple (her favorite color) she selected. Her fingernails and toenails are now clean and pretty. What’s noteworthy about Princess Hazel Salon and Spa’s nail polish service is that there’s no added cost if customers choose high-quality nail polishes like those of O.P.I., Zoya, Orly, and Essie.

Princess Hazel Salon & Spa also offers waxing, body scrubs, eyelash alterations, massage, facial, hair and make-up, Brazilian Blowouts, D2 Treatments, Nou Nou Treatments, hair rebonding and radio frequency for body contouring.

    Price for Value: ★★★★☆

Considering the service and ambiance at Princess Hazel Salon & Spa, prices are at par with the value. This is a one-stop center to visit if you want to have a super-chic, collaborative experience. I’m thrilled to pass by another day after receiving the “loyalty card” they gave me before we left. Customers here get to have a point or a stamp in a card. Points or stamps are earned per visit and a certain accumulation will grant a certain service for free. Here’s the price list:

In addition, Princess Hazel Salon & Spa has daily discounts from Monday to Friday this September. Everything is 50% off during Mondays; 40% off, Tuesdays; 30% off, Wednesdays; 20% off, Thursdays; and 10% off, Fridays, according to the staff.

As I browsed through their Facebook page, I learned that they offer different promos every month, so make yourself a favor and visit their Facebook page or call them up to take advantage of ongoing deals. 😛

  • Vikings Luxury Buffet SM Megamall Mooncake Festival Feature #eatlikeaviking

Vikings Luxury Buffet SM Megamall Mooncake Festival Feature #eatlikeaviking

Want to know the difference between traditional mooncakes and non-traditional mooncakes? Then head on over to any branch of Vikings Luxury Buffet Restaurant in every weekend this September 2014. Mission is to determine which among their mooncake variants appeal to your taste buds most. Allow me in this post to take you through another foodie adventure, in the light of the Chinese Mid-autum Festival season. 中秋节快乐!

Short background about mooncake: The mooncake is the special food of Mid-autumn Festival. It’s on this day/season when people sacrifice mooncakes to the moon as an offering and eat them for celebration. Mooncakes come in various flavors. They are round, symbolizing unison and reunion of families and evoking longing for distant relatives and friends. Nowadays, people present mooncakes to wish a long and happy life.

Vikings SM Megamall Mooncake Festival Feature

Trying out the traditional and non-traditional mooncakes is an absolute must when you visit the Philippines’ largest buffet restaurant. Good lord, the mooncakes are delicious! My only warning is that they’re not the most nutritious and you might get hooked and let things get out of control. But whatever. I know you can handle it. 😛

We started our “afternoon tea meal” with tea and hot dishes. Vikings now includes additional four Twinings tea flavors, namely: Pure Green Tea, Jasmin Green Tea, Earl Grey and Japanese Sencha. Drinking tea is especially good stimulate the digestion and uplift the spirit, so drink up!

The tea was quickly followed with: the Minched Goat Cheese Mooncake with Mango Coulis and the Beef Bourguignon Mooncake with Choron Sauce. I liked that the sauces well complemented the taste of the mooncakes. The tempting mango coulis was composed with earthy spices together with ripe mango. The choron [show-RAWHN] sauce is a hollandaise or béarnaise sauce that has been tinted pink with tomato purée. The mooncakes were tender with a little chew. Eat them as quick as you can; a little heat takes them to great heights.

Next came the Asado Mooncake and Crusty Shrimp Cheese Mooncake, which were unbeatable. Gone are the days really when all we can associate with mooncake filling are mongo, red bean paste, lotus seed paste and egg yolk. I commend Vikings chefs’ innovation and creativity when coming up with different exciting flavors like these two. The asado mooncake was full of meaty chunks of asado, and the shrimp cheese mooncake tasted exactly like shrimp with cheese. Make sure you’re prepared for what’s to come. These almost didn’t taste like mooncakes. 😉

With creamy texture, the Salted Lotus Mooncake tasted the closest to traditional mooncakes. It was dense and sweet—similar to red bean paste, but not too beany. Its freshness made for an easy win! It’s interesting to learn that they were not made by a special mooncake molder but manually by hand. 😛

Finally, it’s time for some real talk. After trying all the mooncakes for the main course, we pleasantly were served with desserts which were also mooncakes! They’re pretty unique and addicting. The Choco Trifle Mooncake was my dream moooncake. It was impressively filled with real rich chocolate that wowed us all. This sweet filling is a rare sight and worth trying out.

Also hewing closer to dessert than an afternoon snack, the Wild Berry Cheese Mooncake was good although some of us commented that the outer layer had a hint of artificial flavoring. In any case, I loved them both.

If traditional mooncakes sound more favorable to you, know that Vikings also has them prepared for diners. The mellow and sweet lotus bean paste brought to mind peanut butter with less stickiness. These ones were wonderful, no less.

    Wrap Up

Vikings Luxury Buffet do stand above the rest, offering in-season food offerings every time. They got the ideal mooncakes with a perfect harmony between outer casing and inner filling. Generally, the outer skin of the mooncake tasted familiar like that of the crackly shell of “hopia.” Each piece was phenomenal as I haven’t tasted anything like these mooncake variants before. These featured food of the month will no doubt get Vikings more customers coming. Eating them with chopsticks or spoon and fork was hard, so feel free to swallow these bite-size pieces with your hands instead and thank yourself afterwards. If you have any favorites, share in the comments. 🙂

Now you don’t have to go far to find stellar variants of mooncakes. They are available at Vikings every Saturday and Sunday this September! Don’t miss. 🙂 The menu varies depending on the branches of Vikings. Each branch offers different flavors according to the in-house chefs’ creativity and taste. Sadly, the mooncakes are not sold in boxes for take-out. The whole package could have been a great gift to family and friends for Mid-autum Festival.

  • 6 Reasons Why Lamido Philippines is a Hit #lamidoPH

6 Reasons Why Lamido Philippines is a Hit #lamidoPH

Online shopping is not a new thing to anyone anymore, and it has never been this easy. A few clicks and we’re done, with hardly stress involved. Purchased items from local sellers get to be delivered straight to our doorstep in a few days.

Along with this convenience, we can free up our precious time in going to physical stores to check for the item’s description, compare prices by visiting rack after rack and store after store, find other colors or sizes of the same item, know which store branch has new stocks, figure out which ones are the new arrivals, etc.

Don’t get me wrong though. I enjoy both online shopping and going out into the jam-packed real world to window-shop. There are really just times when I prefer visiting e-stores to see what they have to offer, once in a while. Lately, I have been finding myself quite obsessed with Lamido.

Launched in January 2014, Lamido Philippines is considered as one of the newest entrants in the Philippine online marketplace. Via Lamido, you can buy and sell items ranging from fashion, electronics, books, unique collectible and more. In each transaction, you can deal with people from your city and from all over the country.

6 Reasons Why Lamido Philippines is a Hit to Filipinos

    1. Easy Buy and Sell with Best Prices

If you have not tried to visit Lamido yet, I suggest that you do that now. Open this link here and discover how the Lamido online marketplace offers buyers items (both used or new) with the best prices. By best, I mean most reasonable. Start comparing prices of items with those posted on olx and you might be surprised how almost everything at Lamido is priced seemingly at a discount.

    2. Free to Run Your Own Business and Make Money

Lamido allows users to promote and advertise products and sell them directly to customers by fixed, discounted or auctioned prices. Sellers can organize payment and shipping of the merchandise as they wish.

Suddenly I remember the Multiply Marketplace which died down a few years back. Well, we got Lamido now and everyone can be a merchant for free. There is no listing fee: you don’t pay anything until you close a deal. Registration steps to be a seller are easy to follow as well.

    3. Safe and Worry-free Transactions

The Lamido website has a well organized layout, so navigation through item categories is easy. There are also multiple filters to aid you in finding and comparing the best deals. Moreover, users have the options to choose where and when they want the items to be delivered while safe and secure. How so? Lamido has this feature called “Lamido Safepay.”

With it, buyers can deposit the payment for the items they bought via bank transfer (to Lamido’s bank account) or cash on delivery. Once the payment is confirmed, Lamido will only release the payment to the sellers when the buyer receives the ordered items, which should be in perfect working condition. If the buyer is not satisfied, returning of items is acceptable.

    4. Dedicated Help Desk

It’s often frustrating when nobody hears out customer complaints and feedback. It’s great that Lamido has thought of working on customer service as it has a team that’s dedicated to attend to buyer complaints. This is what they call the “Buyer Protection Scheme,” which I think everyone will be (hopefully) happy about. Whenever a complaint with a seller is opened, the Order Fulfillment team sends a warning to the sellers to ship out orders or they will hide their listings from the Lamido.com. ph website.

    5. Unusual, Usable Products

The success of Etsy, Ebay, Amazon and Snapdeal, to name a few, can be attributed to the fact that there’s not a lot of sites where you can find unique or unusual products penetrating the online marketplace. These e-stores compete on individuality, aesthetics and the type and variety of products that are available.

This is where Lamido and these mentioned sites are similar, I think. What’s noteworthy is that you can look for “hard-to-find” items in just one big site. Lamido’s brand and reputation for quality will drive the demand.

    6. Mobile Shopping

For smartphone users, Lamido.com.ph is also available for browsing through your Android phone. The Lamido Android app was rolled out and officially launched last July 17, 2014. With this application, you can do online shopping on-the-go. You can also check out the detailed product information and images on the app.

    Wrap Up

Lamido is another site that changes the online landscape of business. It makes everything simpler and easy for buyers and also allows sellers in the Philippines to maximize sales and revenue. Lamido is one of the many ventures owned by Rocket Internet designed to provide the best and safest marketplace for sellers, merchants and buyers. Successfully creating market leading online companies for more than 15 years worldwide, Rocket Internet is continuously finding ways to provide Internet users services they can use for their businesses and their daily use.

  • Move Your Dreams Forward on #WorldDreamDay

Move Your Dreams Forward on #WorldDreamDay

The journey towards the 3rd annual World Dream Day has finally begun! This is the time of the year once again to take the time to focus on a dream, a goal, a desire and think of actions you could take to make this dream real. All these will be happening on Dreambook Project’s World Dream Day Philippines, on September 27, 2014 (Saturday) from 1PM to 5pm, in PowerBooks Greenbelt, Makati City. Mark this day on your calendar as I invite you to take the Dream Day Challenge! 🙂

    The Dream Day Challenge

“All it takes is one conversation to change your life.”

It’s been said that we are more likely to accomplish our goals when we first visualize them and write them down. On Dream Day, participants are encouraged to do both. No more wondering “what if?” It is important to focus on ONE action you can take to move your life, your family, your business, and/or your community forward. Declare your commitment to creating the world of your dreams!

What is Dream Day all about?

Do you frequently tell yourself that you’ll do better “next time” and then don’t change when the time comes? Do you often decide to do something “later” only to find that it never gets done? If you answered “yes” to either one of these questions, you’re probably ignoring the fact that your behavior today is a strong indicator of your behavior tomorrow.

Dream Day aims to activate the transformative power of dreams by empowering dreamers to DO. This is the day when the dreamers, the visionaries and the innovators are honored. The overall mission of this initiative is to empower  individuals, organizations/business and communities around the world to believe that dreams, when combined with thoughtful action, truly CAN and WILL change the world.

World Dream Day and the Dreambook Project

World Dream Day (WDD) is an international movement that is acknowledged by the United Nations. It seeks to unleash human potential and by doing so transform the world. You can browse dayfordreamers.com for more info. The founder of World Dream Day, Ozioma Egwuonwu, has given the go signal for WDD Philippines.

WDD Philippines will use a few pages from Dreambook to help participants specify, clarify and celebrate their dreams or goals, and plan on how to reach these dreams and move these dreams forward. Life coach Claude Sta. Clara will be the speaker and facilitator for the program. Coach Claude is currently a consultant at Mind Pool, Organizational Change Consultants International, and Fullness of Life Foundation.

Dreambooks are inspirational life coaching journals which are currently sold via National Bookstore and Powerbooks. It guides people to unearth their dreams and inspires them to make those dreams reality. Also, it invites users to take action and stay true to their dreams. Please browse facebook.com/dreambookproject for more info.

    Wrap Up

I will be joining the Dreambook Project’s World Dream Day Philippines on September 27 in Powerbooks Greenbelt, and I hope to see you there, too. 🙂 I hope that we can be led to feel more empowered and more encouraged to move our dreams forward and together become a community of dreamers supporting each other! May this be a momentum going for our dreams! I expect that participants will be able develop their own road map better, formalize their  dreams, and with simple but powerful tips and techniques, make them come true.

  • My Browgraphy Experience at Browhaus (Lucky Chinatown Mall, Binondo)

My Browgraphy Experience at Browhaus (Lucky Chinatown Mall, Binondo)

I’m not a celebrity but receiving over 650 likes for a picture I posted on Instagram recently made me feel like one—even just for a day. 😛 It was a selfie photo of me lying on a dentist-like chair in Browhaus, Lucky Chinatown Mall, while the beauty attendant was fixing my brows for the final look. In this post, let me share about my Browgraphy experience at Browhaus Manila. Will I come back for another session? Do I recommend it? You will know later.

    Browhaus Brow Construction: Browgraphy

Prior to having the procedure done, my eyebrows were not really too crazy or unruly. My mom volunteers every so often to shave them for neat arches, like a gardener clipping a topiary, because I can’t do it by myself. Lately though, I felt like wanting to update my eyebrows’ shape and color (to match my hair color). In my world, this task is nebulous—something that should be left to the experts to be safe.

I chose Browhaus Manila to take care of my brows as they are known as the “global authority in hair removal” and they take business seriously. Browhaus operates in several branches in the Philippines for six years now, and they offer the expertise to transform a person’s look by grooming their brows.

Besides Philippines and Singapore (their base), they also have expanded to branches in London, New York, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Thailand. Their aestheticians in Manila are trained in Singapore in two to six months before they are considered qualified. With all these reasons, it didn’t take long for me to be convinced to try at least one of their services.

Browhaus promotes the Brow Resurrection (PhP 38,000) most, claiming that this will make a renewed set of defined and beautiful eyebrows to one who doesn’t have full brows and also improve anyone’s unkempt pair almost magically. More than Brow Resurrection, Browgraphy (PhP 1,298) took my attention because it’s way cheaper and looked less painful.

Browgraphy is a combined service consisting of shaping the eyebrows (via threading and tweezing) and color tweaking. Basically, it’s a duo which works to rework the brows to perfection.

For threading, I have learned that Browhaus uses a fine cotton thread that’s meant for the skin. Typical eyebrow threading doesn’t traumatize the skin the way waxing does. It removes stray hair strands in a row resulting in a clean and natural-looking brow line. Thus, for people who have sensitive skin like me and those disenchanted with waxing, this specialty process is a better option.

My Browgraphy Experience at Browhaus (Lucky Chinatown Mall, Binondo)

I made a reservation a day before for the Browgraphy service. The receptionist asked if I have had my eyebrows dyed and experienced threading before, to which I replied no’s to both. I don’t know if saying yes would make any difference to the steps and formula they will apply. Moving on…

I was led to a reclining chair and the beautician started studying my eyebrows. She asked me to choose among dark brown, medium brown and light brown for the brow color tweak. Lighter brows have a softening effect, while darker brows sharpen features and add definition. I went for the medium brown.

She applied the vegetable-based dye which contained light chemicals (not the same as the one we use to color our hair). The skin around the eye area is more sensitive, and this house product is intended for coloring the eyebrows. It made me look like the female version of Mr. Clean minus the mustache! See?

After 15 minutes, the beautician checked if the “medium brown” color I chose had already taken effect. By that time, I felt a bit of tingling sensation, but it was tolerable. I looked to the mirror and thought that my brows were not still brown enough to call it “medium brown.” We allowed another five minutes to pass until she removed the dye.

Next, she showed me a piece of paper with illustrations of shapes of eyebrows and asked me to choose one. I was clueless and needed some help as well with the selection. In the end, her recommendation was what I regarded as best advice: fourth row, last column.

She proceeded to shape my tinted eyebrows by threading the immediate area, quickly removing the fine hairs. For remaining hair which could not be removed by the thread, tweezers were used; and finally, scissors to trim individual hairs.

The last steps of my Browgraphy treatment were the application of soothing cream to minimize redness and avoid irritation and the filling up of my brows with brown powder. I was advised not to wash my eyebrows water for the next five hours.

    So, how was it?

Of hair removal techniques, many believe that threading causes the least discomfort, if any discomfort at all. Eyebrow threading by Browhaus was not painless, but it was quick and straightforward. It actually felt like tiny rubber bands snapping my skin one after another. I said ouch a couple of times and almost jumped off the seat. The staff said it’s normal for me to feel that way since it was my first time. 😯

I’m just glad I’ve survived the 30-minute treatment without shedding tears to look more fashionable. 😛 The result was satisfying but not drastic as I expected. Anyway, it’s the little things that add up. This is the finished #nofilter look:

Browhaus provided me with a survey sheet which asks customers to rate the elements of the service they rendered and the totality of experience with them from 1-5. Three questions were open-ended. I didn’t have enough time to write my answers on paper since I was rushing to attend a family gathering. I wrote my blog’s URL for them to check and see my answers. And here they are, as follows:

    Q & A

Will I come back for another session? I most probably would not want to come back for another Browgraphy session again. This is because I don’t think that there’s high value for money. The two-in-one solution of coloring and threading my brows does not seem worth the price of PhP 1298 to pay, given that the color is expected to last for two to four weeks only. I can go to other salons to groom my eyebrows and achieve a good brow balance via threading at a much cheaper rate.

Do I recommend it? Yes, I recommend this treatment, especially if you do not know how to shape your eyebrows on your own and you want to dye your brows with maximum comfort and safety for your skin. Having a well-maintained eyebrows can make you look younger by brightening and increasing the intensity of your eyes. Browhaus professionals are nice and you will feel rest assured that they will take care of your brow woes the right way the first time and every time.

What improvements do I suggest to Browhaus? Browhaus Manila has a modern studio that welcomes customers with a friendly and clean environment. They have proper threading furniture and sanitized tools. They follow a standard process that’s aligned with their base in Singapore. They are the experts in styling and grooming the eyebrows. Hence, I can’t anymore think of any improvement with regard to their work and performance.

But if I were to suggest an “outside of the box” improvement, I’d like to propose something related to innovation. 🙂 I would like them to have an optional personalized service of taking a before-photo of the customer, uploading it to the computer, running a system which can analyze based on the facial shape, skin color, hair color and the rest of facial features and then generating a suggested outcome of the eyebrows automatically.

In addition, it will be good if there is also the facility to allow the user to manually mix and match eyebrow shapes, colors, thickness and styles for them to see how the result would look like. This will give better appreciation and excitement in looking forward to the result.

If these can be part of the free consultation service of Browhaus, then I think they can gain more power in turning prospects or leads to actual customers. To extend the plan for improvement further, Browhaus can also develop the application and allow everyone access it via web and/or mobile apps anytime and anywhere! 😛

Review of Chelsea Grand Café (Serendra, Bonifacio Global City)

Rain poured incessantly from mid-afternoon to about 9PM last Friday. Traffic along Buendia and Ayala Avenue to The Fort was really bad. So the unfortunate thing happened: I did not make it in time for the highlight of food entrees prepared for us by Chelsea Grand Café in Serendra. Instead, I joined the bloggers and moved to desserts quickly as I arrived at the venue. This was better than missing out on Chelsea’s great bites on the whole. 🙂

Review of Chelsea Grand Café (Serendra, Bonifacio Global City)

    Ambiance: ★★

Whenever I go to Serendra, I have a habit of checking out the restaurants from the outside to have a “window-shopping” view of those chic hot spots. And boy, there are always things happening in Chelsea Grand Café. This place is hardly empty and it looks like a beehive of glam-up people meeting and dining to enjoy its bright and inviting interiors.

The name “Chelsea” was inspired by the Chelsea Market in New York. I’m not sure if the ambiance also has a semblance, but I can assure that the ambiance here in Chelsea Grand Café is laid-back, casual and light. Various food items for sale are displayed on the divider in the middle of the dining area.

This restaurant grants customers privacy and welcomes them with companionship as they need it most. It is where you can complete your dining experience with a homey environment and take your time to relax after a busy day in the center of the city.

    Service: ★★

I have a few favorite destinations in this upscale “food court” in Serendra, BGC, Taguig, including Mamou, Balducci Ristorante and Deli, and Sentro 1771 not only because of good food but also because of great customer service. Chelsea by Raintree Restaurants is one that I can certainly add into the mix. Service provided has been sincere and friendly, not to mention quick.

Eating desserts first was weird but it was a good try. Why not, right? 😛 My meal started with the Chelsea Peach Melba (250). Looking gorgeous, the treat had the combination of colors which appeared as sunset in a jar. It was made with peaches wrapped with a thick layer of cream, strawberry sauce, mantecado, toasted almonds, and cookie crumble. I liked that their version of the peach melba was not too sweet. Adding hints of cinnamon and pairing it with warm buttermilk biscuits would be nice!

Over the peach melba, I preferred the Baked S’mores (PhP 275) more, which was soooo good. It had the combination of a warm brownie topped with toasted mallows, mantecado ice cream, nuts, and graham crackers. Dense and fudgy but not thin, the s’mores absolutely did not taste like an average brownie. Very filling.

I asked the waiter for the best recommended drink and he offered the Strawberry Mint (PhP 195). Every sip was refreshing. The flavors of strawberry and mint together had a delicate sweetness that was not overwhelming or sickly.

Finally, for my main course, I ordered the Char-Grilled Norwegian Salmon (PhP 595), which had salmon as its star, with salsa verde, toasted pine nuts, glazed country vegetables, olive oil and mashed potatoes on the side.

The salmon’s freshness was excellent. I loved how it was cooked and seasoned perfectly. On another note, the small squares of vegetables had a faint taste, so I didn’t understand if they were put into the same plate just for decoration.

    Price for Value: ★★

No doubt about it—Chelsea serves food at astronomical prices! This establishment pretty much becomes attractive when feasting on some celebrations or impressing a date. Its menu features items that are all good options for any meal if you’re okay to set back at least PhP 500 per person. I consider returning for another visit to let my family also try their food but will reserve it for a momentous occasion.

Review of Zao Vietnamese Bistro (Promenade 3, Greenhills Shopping Center)

The only Vietnamese restaurants I have ever tried before were Pho Bac and Pho Hoa Vietnamese Noodle House, so I’m first going to make a disclaimer here. I won’t pretend to be an expert on Vietnamese food, but when it comes to saying whether food is delicious or not, I may qualify for that. 😛

Here’s the story: One Sunday, we got the chance to test this Vietnamese restaurant in Promenade 3, Greenhills Shopping Center, San Juan called Zao Vietnamese Bistro. Their menu has vast items and in one quick reading, I thought there are enough reliable interesting dishes for diners to try and come back for a number of times without having to reorder the same thing.

Other restaurants in this new wing in Promenade also piqued my interest. But because Zao’s staff offered the most warm welcome in introducing their must-try food in the reception area, we trusted that this Vietnamese restaurant would bring our taste buds immense pleasure for dinner.

    Ambiance: ★★

This modern Vietnamese restaurant in the mall is built with two floors. Decorated with conservative colors, both areas are well appointed and are large enough to accommodate guests without having people to wait long. Getting a table is not a pain.

Seats are positioned with ample distance between customers, making a cozy vibe that’s more on the private and formal side—appropriate for a date and also good for a trendy crowd. The classy ambiance is magnified by the beautiful ceiling set with elegant lights.

    Service: ★★

The wait staff acted chill and totally professional. They were always ready to move on their feet whenever they see customers raise their hands to call attention. This is the type of customer service that deserves respect and will also earn you a reason to go back and have another amazing dining experience at Zao Vietnamese Bistro.

    Food: ★★

Something every table seemed to order was the Appetizer Sampler (PhP 565). We had it as a solid starter and nothing went wrong. This sampler featured a nice presentation of all sorts of appetizers in one plate: fresh rolls, vegetable salad, spring rolls, pork and chicken satay and sugar cane shrimps.

They were all rich and pretty tasty. I especially liked the sugar cane shrimps. It’s a new discovery for me and I found it very unique. The satay were hard to chew. The spring rolls were standard fried goodness with dipping sauce.

But if you prefer not confusing your palate with an assortment of food with differing flavors and textures, feel free to order them individually, as follows:

    • Fresh Rolls (PhP 215) – with shrimps, noodles, pork, bean sprouts, greens and yellow bean-hoisin sauce
    • Crispy Spring Rolls (PhP 245) – with pork, glass noodles and mushrooms served with lettuce wrap
    • Pork/Chicken Satay (PhP 195) – grilled Vietnamese satay with Zao dipping sauce and pickled vegetables
    • Sugar Cane Shrimps (PhP 345) – deep fried shrimp paste wrapped on sugar cane served with lettuce wrap

Zao’s Vietnamese Beef Stew (PhP 365) consisted of chunks of slow-cooked aromatic beef simmered in star anise and basil, swimming in a bowl of reddish stew. It’s a good rendition, with a delicious mix of sweet and heat. Cooked well and full of flavor, the beef chunks did the heavy lifting, which deserved to be scored an A. Pairing this dish with steamed white rice was great and just proper.

I’m not a huge fan of Vietnamese food but this restaurant is approved! 🙂 If you’re in search of something new and good to eat, come check out Zao Vietnamese Bistro in Greenhills. Prices of food here are not cheap, but servings are big, the kind that will fill you up without hitting your wallet so hard. One a la carte dish can be shared by two people, take note.

Side trivia: Zao means “life” in Vietnamese. 🙂
