As I have started blogging about food and receiving invitations to more and more food events, my knowledge on food has increased tenfold. I went places I never went before. I came to know about more dishes I never knew existed. I came to taste some of the best food in the city—that may not necessarily be categorized as “healthy.” 😛 With my current lifestyle, it’s very important to strictly maintain my body weight and fitness and at the same time get proper nutrition.

I’ve read many articles and books on the eye-opening truth about this so-called “proper nutrition.” The secrets on how to improve health through diet have been long unveiled. However, some still choose not to care or are struggling to find the right combination of food to get them to their weight goals.

Oscar of Oscar’s Deli PH shares that whether your goal is to lose, gain or maintain weight, dieting is supposed to be easy. In fact, it’s so simple that chances are, you already know the fundamental rules: “Eat fewer calories than what your body needs and you lose weight. In the same vein, eat more than what it needs and you gain. Eat just what your body needs and you maintain.” Aside from those, he reminds that we need to keep track of one other thing: protein.

I’ve exchanged emails with Oscar and felt interested about his dream of a future where everyone is intelligently informed of the simplicity of nutrition. In essence, what he’s saying is that we don’t need to restrict ourselves to an obscenely limited selection of food. His mission is to contribute to a nutrition revolution by acting as a portal to nutrition research. By delivering food, Oscar’s Deli will be able to demonstrate the ease of nutrition by providing its customers with the value of information.

It's time for a nutrition revolution!

Out of the four products now available in Oscar’s Deli (see above photo), the Proton Bites and the 5-Star Chicken Patties were delivered to my address for me to try.

Review of Oscar’s Deli PH (Proton Bites and 5-Star Chicken Patties)

Proton Bites – 5 pieces (PhP 155)

Chewing on Proton Bites was almost like chewing a Cloud 9 chocolate bar by Jack ‘n Jill. The pieces were chewy and chocolatey. The outside portion is coated with Hershey’s chocolate (loved it), while the center explodes with a richer chocolate flavor that me left wanting for some plain water to wash it down. The packaging is simple but I do suggest to have compartments in between each piece probably like how Chips Ahoy does it, because they tend to be so sticky that it’s hard to get one out without ruining the others.

5-Star Chicken Patties – 3 quarter pound patties (PhP 165)

For the busy home cooks, ordering the 5-star chicken patties will get you covered for a hassle-free meal. All you need to do is fry-pan the filleted chicken breast and not worry about the nutrition it contains. I actually had one patty with rice for breakfast for three consecutive days, and I’m happy to report that I didn’t grow tired of the taste. 😉

Oscar’s Deli’s chicken patties are very unlike other frozen chicken patties or those served in fastfood restaurants. This version was not dry, even though we cooked it without oil (as indicated in the instruction label). Sure, it won’t win any award for being the juiciest chicken patty ever, but it does the trick just fine. I also thought the thickness was enough and the fillet was well seasoned.

Wrap Up

There’s an increasing awareness and demand for health food products (diet meals, in particular) delivered to homes nowadays. Oscar’s Deli PH is not exactly that type that brings packed meals for the entire week. It has its own unique initiative and vision that is to make us appreciate good-tasting food with the right level of essentials such as protein, fiber, carbs and fats. These are for everyone and not just the health-conscious. I just find that the prices of items are a bit high as compared to similar items being sold in local supermarkets. For what they are worth, you might as well try! 😛

Haha sorry, I’m not trying to gain weight. My goal is to maintain it OR gain some but in the form of muscles. 😆 Yeah I think you will like the Proton Bites. We cooked the chicken patties in a non-stick frying pan so it was okay. The patties tasted like chicken meat and nothing much of additives. The plus factor is that the laman is siksik and tasted good even without adding condiments. Try it!

The Proton Bites actually look delicious. Is the only way you can make those chicken patties is to fry it? Can you maybe bake it instead? It is good that it is seasoned. We don’t have places like this that deliver here. Maybe in other parts of the states there is.

Maybe you can bake it, too. 🙂 The truth is that I’m not really the creative type when it comes to cooking food as my mom does all of the cooking in the kitchen. We just followed the instruction on the label for this one.

Those Proton Bites didn’t look good at first. I actually thought it was an uncooked patty! And then I started reading the article (with my wife), and now we are craving for one! I wish they can ship here in Bulacan too :3

Haha yeah maybe they will consider more places to deliver in the future. I guess that if you want to lose weight, gain muscle, increase energy levels or just generally look and feel healthier, being aware of the nutrition facts of the food you eat is key.

I’ve always been attracted to the idea of catered healthy food, it seems to be such a good way to make sure we eat healthily and with the right calories, etc too. I think the proton bites actually looks very mouth watering, not what i’d expect from what essentially a diet food!

    Reply
    • Rochkirstin Santos

Oh yes, I also didn’t expect that the proton bites are considered as diet food. Anyway, now we have learned about the nutrition facts so it’s safe to say that we get protein from these. I hope that Oscar’s Deli would have more products for us to choose from!

What I like about Oscars Deli is that they are really very detailed on their ingredients so you’ll know if it would match your nutrients requirement.

You are so right. The nutrition facts actually reminded me to check the food label every time I buy food items from the grocery. I used to have a tracking of all the carbs, protein, fats, etc. of the food I eat through an online app. Maybe I should continue doing that for my fitness goals.

I like that the chicken wasn’t dry. You’re right that most of them really are dry when they’re cooked.

Haha yup. This one is quite different as you don’t need to go out of your house to get the food item. You’ll just have to wait until the food is delivered as scheduled. 😉

Yum! It sure made me crave for some now. Unfortunately, I’m not in the Phils. I think I will just have to make my own version of the chicken patties. 🙂

Exactly. For those who are a bit skeptical on ordering for example the chicken patties for the first time, they can choose to get the three pieces first. When they like it, then they can order the five pieces next.

Yeah it’s great to mind the calories of the food you eat. While I keep a food journal, I also have a workout tracker to make sure that I don’t take in more calories than my body needs to maintain my weight.

Yes, knowing about the “healthiness” of food we eat is really very helpful. This is especially true for those who are conscious and strict on the calorie count and fat percentage they’d take from each meal.

First time hearing of oscar deli but i love his motto, dieting should be easy be it to increase, lose or maintain weight. I totally agree with the idea of actually eating what your body needs not too much especially when you trying to lose or maintain your weight and i know many people struggle with this concept myself included. Lovely post and food looks good

Do you mean he only sells online via orders then pick up system? How did you find him? Does he indicate the ingredients of the product? I’m quite curious if his items are good for vegan, vegetarian, paleo etc.

    Reply
    • Rochkirstin Santos

Pick up system? The concept is that customers send their order via email, text or viber. Once received, he’ll deliver the item/s to the stated address. He emailed me to try some of the food products and that’s how I also got interested. The ingredients are specified on the label of the packaging. I think they are not good for vegans and vegetarians because the items are mostly meaty (chicken, beef, pork). Maybe the proton bites and pancakes are okay.
