  • What to Do About Stretch Marks

What to Do About Stretch Marks

From dry buffing to drinking gallons of water, many of us spend a lot of time and energy striving to achieve flawless skin. So, when a bunch of pesky stretch marks shows up, it can be incredibly disheartening! But don’t worry because you’re not alone. Stretch marks are a common skin complaint, affecting 90 percent of women who have been pregnant, 70 percent of adolescent females and 40 percent of adolescent males.

    So, what are they?

Also known as striae, stretch marks are deep, groove-like lines that appear in the skin after the dermal layer has been stretched beyond its normal size. Usually occurring during pregnancy, adolescence or periods of weight gain, stretch marks are found in areas that are prone to an increase in sizes, such as the abdomen and thighs. Anyone who works out is also liable to get stretch marks on their arms because the increase in muscle mass causes the skin to stretch unexpectedly.

The good news is that if you have recent stretch marks, you have a good chance of minimizing their appearance. But be warned, the older the stretch marks get, the harder you have to work at reducing them.

Okay, so what can you do to avoid them?

While there are plenty of things you can do to minimize your chances of getting stretch marks from exercise or weight gain, when it comes to pregnancy, the odds of getting stretch marks increase by 50 percent if your mother suffered from them — which is up there with all the other life odds you didn’t expect! During pregnancy, genetics play a significant role in stretch marks, so while there might not be much you can do to stop them, there are ways to reduce their appearance.

What to Do About Stretch Marks

    • Diet – Eating plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains will help you to avoid gaining unnecessary weight, which could contribute to stretch marks. Avoid eating processed, sugary foods, as they will pile on the pounds and force your skin to stretch!
    • Exercise – Getting up and about will help to stave off unwanted pounds while keeping your muscles toned.
    • Water – Water is essential for keeping your skin hydrated, so aim for at least eight glasses a day.
    • Vitamin E – Used as a food supplement and as a massage oil, vitamin E is proven to keep skin supple and elastic, as well as helping to support your immunity.
    • Moisturize – Many moms-to-be turn to cocoa butter to keep their bumps moisturized and their skin supple.
But what if you already have them?

Luckily, there are ways you can reduce the appearance of your stretch marks, using items that you probably already have around the home. Aloe vera gel is well regarded for its abilities to reduce the appearance of stretch marks due to its intensively moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effects. If you have an aloe vera plant, snap off a piece and rub the gel into your skin twice a day to lighten the appearance of stretch marks.

Lemon is also known for its abilities to boost collagen production in the skin as it contains large quantities of vitamin C. Squeeze the juice of a lemon onto your stretch marks, leave for 20 minutes and wash off with warm water.

While these home remedies might help, the most effective way to remove stretch marks is through laser treatment. The laser kick-starts the body’s natural healing process by removing the damaged tissues and promoting the production of collagen to improve the texture and color of the skin. Microneedles is another way to build collagen production and make stretch marks less noticeable.

Of course, there is a simple alternative to these treatments: learn to love them! Stretch marks are a natural function of the body and nothing to warrant shame. Embracing them is a positive step for both your mind and body!

  • Review of Fukuda FAWM70 7kg Fully Automatic Washing Machine

Review of Fukuda FAWM70 7kg Fully Automatic Washing Machine

We moved into our new house last January 21, 2018. My husband, Louie, surprised me and gave me a tour like a tourist guide explaining the history and details of each “attraction.” It was the first time I saw the house after over a year of construction and interior design, although we chose the furniture and appliances when we purchased them in the stores.

Everything was complete except for the washing machine. Our clothes were all being washed by our househelpers, and we haven’t really had the time to research about washing machine specifications and find the best one for our use. If anything, what we had hoped to get is a fully-automatic washing machine that’s capable of providing heavy-duty washing and convenient drying experience. We came across the Fukuda FAWM70 (7kg) and so far, we’re happy with it. 🙂 In this post, I’m sharing the top reasons why.

Review of Fukuda FAWM70 7kg Fully Automatic Washing Machine

    1. It’s a time-saving and effective appliance for handling our laundry needs.

The Fukuda FAWM70 is a 7kg fully-automatic washing machine that functions for both washing and drying clothes. It has a reliable and efficient wash motor to make sure clothes are clean all the time. It saves us time since it offers a fuss-free option without any manual intervention. The “FUZZY logic function” is an intelligent program; it can perceive the washing capacity and then set the best procedure.

It adjusts water, energy, and so on accordingly. The spin cycle function is also particularly useful as it spins out excess water and partially dries laundry so the drying time on clothes line is cut down as well. Thankfully, it washes both synthetics and cotton superbly, and its rinse and spin modes are extremely thorough.

    2. The modestly-sized 7kg load capacity suits us just fine.

We tend to wash clothes about once or twice a week so this drum size is sufficient. The space-saving top loader’s drum is large enough for easy access.

    3. It’s energy-efficient.

The Fukuda FAWM70 doesn’t cost the earth to run. Its wash and dry program allows us to finish the job of washing and drying clothes straight through in under an hour with one push of a button. Its energy-saving mode adjusts the cycle time based on the weight of your laundry, reducing the amount of water and electricity used. Plus, it’s equipped with the 24-hour preset, meaning you can choose to soak your laundry first then set the machine to automatically run the wash cycle after a preset time. When not in use, it powers off automatically, saving energy even more.

    4. It’s easy to use.

This washing machine features a digital panel with ergonomic button design for convenient operation. It’s designed with a tempered glass lid with damper for safe and slow closing of the lid. The intuitive, user-friendly controls are a major bonus for those who rarely read instruction manuals. If you’re like me who don’t like complexity when it comes to appliances, then give this one a whirl.

    Other particulars:

    Voltage/Frequency : 220V / 60Hz
    Input Power : 340W
    Net Weight : 27kg • Gross Weight : 31kg
    Dimension : 565 x 580 x 910mm

    Is the worth it?

With so many models on the market, it’s hard to pick what’s right, especially with the pressure of a limited discounts window.

The Fukuda FAWM70 Fully Automatic Washing Machine ticks a lot of boxes. It can carry large loads of up to 7kg and has a quick wash time of less than an hour, making speedy washing an easy option for families or couples on the go. Given its reasonable price and great feature set, you might wonder where the catch is. But there’s no nasty surprises: it is energy-efficient, performs exceptionally well in most areas and isn’t too noisy in the process.

With a digital panel showing how much longer your washing will take and a handy program which auto-doses according to what each load needs, it’s a fully automatic washing machine to look out for. The Fukuda FAWM70 is decently priced at ₱8,990.00. Hopefully, it will last us at least 10 years. 🙂

For more information about this item and other Fukuda consumer electrical products, visit Fukuda Asia’s website at https://fukuda-asia.com/.

How to Choose the Best Washing Machine for Your Household

After months of shopping for appliances and hearing advice of different people, we’ve learned not to be tempted to choose a washing machine based on price alone. This is often a false economy and may actually end up being more expensive in the long term. A cheap machine might well use more water and electricity, take longer to wash clothes and not give the same cleaning or stain-removing performance of pricier models.

If you’re not exactly sure which features are right for you, get help from the local manufacturer, store representatives, or local support center of different brands. Energy consumption, spin speed, drum size, wash modes, special features, and ease of use are factors to consider. Ask for a buying guide and they’ll take you through absolutely everything you need to know about buying a washing machine, so that you can make a confident decision and be happy with your choice.

Review of Citadines Millennium Ortigas Manila (Ortigas Center, Pasig)

Holy Week is upcoming! If you haven’t decided where to spend the long weekend yet, how about considering a staycation at Citadines Millennium Ortigas Manila? We wanted to rent a hotel room or condominium unit near our office to celebrate our friend’s bachelor party. We’re all girls and he’s the only male in our team. A surprise party days before his wedding would be fun, we thought, and we were right! It took months to finalize the details and agree where to book. At last, Citadines in Ortigas Center topped our team’s poll. Here are photos (before the event started) and a short review of the place.

Review of Citadines Millennium Ortigas Manila (Ortigas Center, Pasig)

Citadines Millennium Ortigas is home to 293 guestrooms. All are tastefully furnished, and many even provide such comforts as scale, sofa, towels, separate living room, and desk. The property offers fantastic facilities, including fitness center, outdoor pool, garden, to help guests unwind after an action-packed day in the city.

We stayed in the 3-Bedroom Deluxe Apartment for one night only and had a good time. Equipped with a private bathroom equipped with a shower, the bedrooms are plush and snug but in classically simple patterns and textures: crisp pleats, crisp folds and crisp lines. Beige and browns dominate the elegant spaces, and the artworks on the wall portray a nice touch of creativity. Abstract art mixed in with modern pieces creates a great soft cozy look.

The kitchen opens up to the dining area, designed without any unnecessary frills and complete with electric appliances that can be conveniently used for cooking.

The living room looks sleek, with white walls, gray sofa, light stand fixture, and cabled HD TV. It’s a good section to converse with people, play games, watch TV shows, or just chill.

    Wrap Up

Overall, this deluxe unit in Citadines Millennium Ortigas Manila has an easy-on-the-eye palette that’s ideal for those looking to opt for a contemporary yet relaxing setting while in the busy city of Pasig (near many corporate offices, malls, restaurants, and other lifestyle centers). We definitely felt at home and comfortable with its easygoing and welcoming vibe. I recommend staying here for a get-together with friends, staycation with family, or a short vacation from the rigors of daily life. It’s a peaceful, zen-like, and stylish space.

  • Review of Spicy Elements (SM CDO Downtown Premier, Cagayan de Oro)

Review of Spicy Elements (SM CDO Downtown Premier, Cagayan de Oro)

On our last day in Cagayan de Oro, we had lunch in Spicy Elements located at the fifth level of SM CDO Downtown Premier. For Bicolano cuisine lovers, this restaurant’s appeal may be more than just nostalgia. Bicolano food is notable for flaming hot flavors in their dishes. We were enticed with Laing con Lechon on the menu and were in the mood to pair it with Salmon Head Sinigang sa Miso. Hence, after going through several restaurants in the mall, we chose this to be our last stop before our flight back to Manila.

Review of Spicy Elements Grill, Steaks, and Bar (SM CDO Downtown Premier, Cagayan de Oro)

    Ambiance:

The atmosphere is both a party and family-friendly. The colorful space is big and open, filled with a low-key crowd all there to do one thing: savor spicy food elements and get full experience of the heat. The bad part? Literally, there’s heavy and persistent smoke that comes out from the kitchen almost every time a dish is served to customers’ tables. We were seated just beside the kitchen (counter area), hence we were the first unlucky ones to inhale all that smoky glory. I have rhinitis so the smoke badly triggered nasal congestion. It felt miserable and made me uncomfortable.

    Food:

Laing con Lechon (PhP 199) consisted of a toothsome medley of creamy, and tasty dried taro (gabi) leaves simmered slowly in coconut milk and hearty chunks of lechon. The meat was so tender you barely need to chew. We ate this with rice but it’s just good by itself. To give laing an even bolder, spicier flavor, breaking the green chili and adding it to each mouthful will be sublime.

Salmon Head Sinigang sa Miso (PhP 255) kept us warm, full, and happy. Sinigang is a type of sour soup in clear broth. It’s perfect to cut through the super rich taste of coconut from laing, which makes it more satisfying because of the contrast. The salmon had a subtle fishy yet sweet inside, and the vegetables were cooked fresh and crisp. Overall, we ended the meal on a positive note. This combination of flavors in this dish was reliably good!

    Price for Value:

From appetizers to mains, there’s something for everyone at Spicy Elements. Their straightforward and well-prepared Bicaolano fare are great picks for any meal. Prices are pretty reasonable; the food tasted fine and were served in generous amount. Service could be faster and more watchful though, and the environs could be further improved, especially the air conditioning and ventilation to keep all the smoke out.

  • Review of Prawn House Seafood Restaurant (Centrio Mall, Cagayan de Oro)

Review of Prawn House Seafood Restaurant (Centrio Mall, Cagayan de Oro)

Where to eat in Cagayan de Oro? I had no idea. I thought it’s best to ask the locals and get some traveler-friendly tips at the same time. We definitely love seafood and the good news is that Northern Mindanao has a reputation of having the freshest supply of marine resources. There’s so many seafood restaurants to choose from. They pointed us to Panagatan Seafood Restaurant, Alavar’s Seafood and Grill, Blackbeard’s Seafood Island, and Prawn House Seafood Restaurant. After checking out the menus, we finally decided to try the one whose name has tickled our fancy: Prawn House Seafood Restaurant in Ayala Centrio Mall.

    prawn house seafood restaurant

In 2015, Prawn House has won the Best Seafood Cuisine Specialty Restaurant trophy in the Golden Globe Annual Awards for Business Excellence. Their seafood dishes must be some kind of “magical” delicious. How true is this? Read this post to get a glimpse.

Review of Prawn House Seafood Restaurant (Centrio Mall, Cagayan de Oro)

    Ambiance:

Space-wise, this restaurant has everything you expect from a big, buzzy restaurant in Cagayan de Oro’s Centrio Mall. It has wooden furniture, tables arranged for big groups, and carefully curated decor for the Valentine’s season. It’s the month of love, anyway, when we visited. In this case, there were cutouts of hearts and prawns hanging from the ceiling. The restaurant didn’t feel upscale and expensive but it has an enjoyable atmosphere where guests can dine comfortably with plenty of conversation.

    Food:

When you’re ready to take a break from meat in the Lent season, Prawn House Seafood Restaurant is a nice place to celebrate some winning seafood. We ordered Grilled Tuna Panga (PhP 49/100g), Prawn Adobo (PhP 269), and Baked Scallops (PhP 379). Everything was tasty and well-cooked!

When you can’t decide which to get, their prawns are excellent and definitely worth ordering. Prawn meals are available in: steam garlic sauce, sweet garlic butter, spicy garlic butter, garlic fry, gata (coconut milk sauce), barbecue, grilled lemon butter, spicy with salt and pepper, and adobo. The Prawn Adobo turned out as the star of our meal. I could have had another cup of rice to eat it with. It was salty, sweet, and comforting, all wrapped up into one.

The Baked Scallops were another hit. Just the smell of it was already beckoning. Imagine: rich and hearty scallops, each one loaded with a little buttery, a little herbacious, and a little salty concoction, baked in golden cheese—if that’s not romance in a dish, I don’t know what is.

Classic in every way, the Grilled Tuna Panga had a nice texture and savory flavor. Tender and packed with a smoky goodness, this tuna had a meaty center and a thin layer of browned exterior. Awesome! 🙂

    Price for Value:

When you’re planning a date or a dinner with friends in CDO, Prawn House Seafood Restaurant is the place to do it, especially if coming with a group who appreciates seafood cooked in Filipino style. There’s a lot of energy here, and it translates into the food and experience as a whole. Prices are pretty decent and fair compared to the value. They also have noodles, veggies, beef, pork, chicken, and rice on the menu.

  • Review of Seda Centrio Hotel (Cagayan De Oro, Misamis Oriental)

Review of Seda Centrio Hotel (Cagayan De Oro, Misamis Oriental)

Together with a colleague, I flew to Cagayan de Oro this February to check out Healthy Options in Centrio Mall. (It’s one of our team’s mission this year to visit all our stores across the Philippines.) Part of the experience was an overnight stay at Seda Centrio Hotel. Fortunately, this hotel is located just right beside the mall, so we didn’t have to travel far and spend more time elsewhere. Because of its strategic location and first-rate facilities, Seda Centrio – Cagayan De Oro is a popular pick for both business and leisure travelers. It offers quality accommodation in the business, shopping, and restaurants district of CDO.

Review of Seda Centrio Hotel (Cagayan De Oro, Misamis Oriental)

    Ambiance:

Right at the center of one of the most progressive hubs and the gateway of northern Mindanao Island, Seda Centrio melds an excellent location, outstanding customer service, and superior quality into a memorable hospitality experience.

Seda Centrio shares a roof with the upscale Centrio Mall. Though connected to the mall, it ensures security and exclusivity with a private entrance that leads to the Front Desk at the 4th floor where guests are greeted by a contemporary open layout connecting the lobby seamlessly into an e-lounge with its bank of iMacs and Misto restaurant and bar. Further up are the meeting rooms while outdoors, the “al fresco” dining area leads up to the adult and children’s pools.

Tastefully decorated with elegance, each room at this hotel is air-conditioned and is fitted with a flat-screen TV. There’s also a kettle, a vault, and a mini refrigerator. The private bathroom has a neat layout with a shower enclosure and conveniences: electrical hairdryer, bathrobe and slippers, towels, and basic toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush kit, body wash, shaver kit, and napkins. The beds were comfortable and the atmosphere was quiet. The Wi-Fi connection was fast, stable, and reliable. I could work here all day! Overall, Seda Centrio has well exceeded my expectation. 🙂

    Service:

The staff were straightforward, nice, and efficient. We had a mix-up while checking in (we were mistakenly booked at Seda Abreeza in Davao), and the receptionist helped in checking for available accommodation and transferring the booked location to CDO. We tried calling the phone to ask where the hairdryer was and it was answered in just one ring. Servers at Misto Restaurant were also pleasant and very welcoming. Everyone greeted us amiably with a smile.

    Food:

Our booking included breakfast buffet in Misto Restaurant, and we were spoiled for choices. 🙂 Misto had an extensive selection of comfort food for breakfast: eggs, bacon, cured meat, yogurt, bread, waffles, pancakes, salads, rice, sausages, cereals, adobo chicken, veggies, fruits, soup, and more. I love the mix of Filipino and Continental food variety. The arrangement of the dining area was great; there’s a lot of privacy and it’s notable that the servers take pride in making our experience relaxing and enjoyable. Two thumbs up!

    Price for Value:

Seda Centrio is truly a premier lifestyle destination, a perfect place for de-stressing, family bonding (staycation), or staying in for a business trip. It has a close proximity not only to Centrio Mall, but it’s also easy walking disance away from SM CDO Downtown Premier and Gaisano City Mall CDO.

Prices are not bad. The deluxe room (twin room – 1 king bed or two single beds) costs around P4500/night. No wonder why it is rated for the best value in Cagayan de Oro. If you’re visiting CDO soon and want to stay in an oasis in the middle of the bustling city, you can’t go wrong with choosing Seda Centrio as your home away from home! It delivers on all of the expected staples of the brand. Nice and friendly staff, delectable food, modern, streamlined design, and the homey, personal vibe all help make it a solid value stay. 😉 Highly recommended!

  • Review of Third Space Studio Cafe (Banawe, Quezon City)

Review of Third Space Studio Cafe (Banawe, Quezon City)

It’s been a while since I last blogged about food reviews. Work has been very busy lately, but our interest in visiting interesting and unique restaurants hasn’t waned. Two weeks ago, we came across Third Space Studio Cafe in Banawe corner N.S. Amoranto, Quezon City and thought the place looks artsy and cozy. Call it a collector’s haven, if you may. The cafe has trinkets of treasures: vintage pieces, odd decorations you wouldn’t imagine would look good when put together, and different sets of dining tables and chairs in one setting. There’s no wonder why it’s called “Third Space Studio Cafe” in the first place!

    Third Space Studio Cafe, Banawe

Review of Third Space Studio Cafe (Banawe, Quezon City)

    Ambiance:

We came here out of convenience (its location is near our home) and mostly because we wanted to try more of their food. Apparently, the ambiance is such a great considerable factor to why this cafe is a must-visit. The owners like collecting things like frames, old furniture, lighting pieces, and various carefully curated decors that can certainly pique one’s interest. There’s also a jukebox, toy vending machine, and vintage wooden horse.

Third Space Studio Cafe is a good venue for a casual first date. Natural lighting is ample, and the tables are spread out enough that you don’t need to listen to the group next to yours. It also works well for a family dinner. Seats are comfortable so patrons can stay a longer time going down memory lane together over food and drinks.

    Food:

Food in Third Space Studio Cafe turned out pretty average for my taste but it was fine for Louie’s. Fish and Chips (PhP 195) weren’t as crunchy as I liked, the Roast Beef Rice Meal (PhP 175) served in beef broth gravy wasn’t anything to be excited about, and their Okinawa Milk Tea was too sweet for my liking. An iconic dish we saw on Third Space Studio Cafe’s menu was the lechon burger, but it wasn’t readily available. It could have been a good candidate for being the star of our meal! We hope to try it next time.

    Price for Value:

While the cafe decors didn’t look cohesive, they strangely work. “Third Space Studio Cafe is the result of random and pleasant coincidences. It is a product of being given the chance to create, being presented with the opportunity to do something very fun, and the will to collaborate with other artists.” We enjoyed the concept and creativity put in the exhibition. As a whole, this cafe in Banawe is worth going to. The food and price for value could be better.

  • Keeping Your Skin Moisturized In the Winter

Keeping Your Skin Moisturized In the Winter

Winter can be pretty harsh on the skin, even if you don’t have a naturally dry complexion. There isn’t as much moisture in the air during the colder months of the year, which means your skin will be significantly drier. If your skin is too dry, it will start to bleed and crack. Chances are you’re also using the heat in your home more in the winter, which further robs your skin of moisture. You can also make your skin drier when you take hot baths or showers in the winter.

Adding moisture to your skin and using a quality face wash can be helpful temporarily, but you’ll need to do more to provide long-term care for your skin and keep your complexion looking its best. Here are some helpful suggestions for maintaining a youthful complexion even in harsh winter conditions.

    Don’t Use Hot Water

When you’re washing your face or body, use lukewarm water. If the water is too hot, it will strip your skin of natural oils. Since the air is already very dry in the winter, the small amount of oil that you have in your skin could be taken away by washing with water that is too warm. Lukewarm water helps to balance the moisture levels in your skin and opens up your pores enough for moisturizer to be truly effective.

    Moisturize Often

As soon as you get out of the shower or bathtub or wash your face, be sure to moisturize. During the winter, your skin will dry out very quickly, so it’s best to apply moisturizer when your skin is still damp from cleansing.

When you moisturize the skin before it dries completely, you’re sealing moisture in, which reduces redness and peeling. It may also be helpful to have your moisturizer handy right near the bathtub so you won’t forget to apply lotion to your face and body immediately.

Moisturizers that contain skin conditioning ingredients like vitamin E or aloe vera are also helpful in the winter, since they make the skin softer and help prevent fine lines and wrinkles. You may also want to try a moisturizer that contains coconut oil, since this can be used on both the body and face. Coconut oil also has the ability to lock in moisture and has antimicrobial properties that can reduce breakouts.

    Protect Your Skin

In addition to using a cream-based cleanser and moisturizer for your skin, remember to protect your face and the rest of your skin when you’re out in the cold weather. Remember that you still need to wear sunscreen even though its winter, since the sun is still shining and your complexion could still be affected by UV rays. Your sunscreen should also include extra moisturizing ingredients like avocado or sunflower oils, as well as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to keep your skin from being damaged by the sun.

    Hydrate From the Inside Out

Get a humidifier for your home so that you can fill the home with moisture and keep your skin from becoming too dry. It’s also very important to drink lots of water in the winter time, even though you may not feel the need to drink as much.

The winter season is usually when people like to enjoy hot drinks like tea and hot chocolate, and this can deprive your skin of moisture. Drink a little warm water with a splash of lemon to cleanse the skin internally and keep your body hydrated.

Of course, you can also drink cool or room temperature water with a slice of lemon or cucumber to flush impurities from the skin and give you a healthy glow even in rough weather conditions.

    Moisturize Overnight

Finally, you’ll have a better chance of keeping moisture in your skin if you apply moisturizer before going to bed and leave it on while you sleep. This works for your face as well as your hands and feet and other areas that are difficult to moisturize, such as elbows and knees.

Lotions and facial moisturizers that include keratin and aloe are great choices, or you can make your own body moisturizer with coconut oil and a few drops of your favorite essential oil. If you wear gloves or socks after moisturizing, you can lock in moisture for longer periods of time.
