  • Review of Casa Myeongdong Guesthouse and Budget Hotel (Seoul, South Korea)

Review of Casa Myeongdong Guesthouse and Budget Hotel (Seoul, South Korea)

Our flight from Manila to Incheon International Airport took almost four hours. From the airport, we rode Airport Bus#6015 which took us straight to Myeongdong (last stop). The ride took another 1.5 hours without heavy traffic. I just knew from research that Casa Myeongdong is very near Myeongdong Station but forgot to print out a map for clearer directions. Good thing that Myeongdong Shopping Street is filled with shops and most of them can communicate through Mandarin. We asked them for help and finally managed to find the way. 🙂

Casa Myeongdong in Jung-gu, Chungmuro 2(i)-ga, Seoul is located literally about 20 meters from Exit 9 or Exit 10 of Myeongdong Station. Myeong-dong is one of the busiest places in Seoul and is among Korea’s premier shopping destinations. This is where you can find lots of make up, skin care, fashionable items, cool restaurants, and more.

The reception area is at the eighth floor of the building and its design seems more like a boutique hotel. To check in, I handed out my passport for identity reference and booking voucher (printed from Agoda.com) and deposited KRW 10,000 (refunded upon checkout). The receptionist gave me the key card and guided us to our room on the seventh floor.

Review of Casa Myeongdong Guesthouse and Budget Hotel (Seoul, South Korea)

    Ambiance:

Casa Myeongdong’s ambiance and interior design looked neat, stylish, and modern. We stayed in the family room which has two queen-size beds. The sheets were clean and the pillows were okay. Amenities included air conditioning, hair dryer, cable TV, desk, mirror, and mini refrigerator.

In the bathroom, there was no separator between the toilet and the shower area. Toiletries consisted of hair shampoo, conditioner and liquid bath soap. We had to buy toothbrushes downstairs from the nearby 7-11 store. It was also quite disappointing that the bath towels provided were smaller than the regular size. They appeared more like a cross between a hand towel or face towel and a floor mat. 🙁

Anyway, we were happy that fast Wi-Fi Internet connection could be accessed everywhere in the hotel and there were so many routers and hot spots available. Room slippers and bathroom slippers were placed nicely by the door. Maybe because of lack of space, the cabinets for clothes and stuff were positioned under the bed mattress. It was only when we were reviewing the pictures back in Manila when we discovered them. Haha.

    Service:

Security at the guesthouse was lenient. The main door would be locked after 11pm, so guests would have to input the password to enter the guesthouse aside from using the access card for the room door. Reception closes at 10PM and opens at 7AM. For guests checking in or out before or after those times, giving prior advice to the staff is a must. Korean guesthouse staff members know how to speak in English and Chinese. There’s no problem in conversing with them. They were accommodating and friendly in answering our questions.

As part of their terms and conditions, room cleanup was done only as verbally requested. Changing of bed sheets will incur additional cost.

    Food:

We booked the hotel room with free breakfast. Sadly, there’s not much that could be expected and be satisfied about from the complimentary breakfast. Casa Myeongdong does not serve rice meals or buffet but only cereals, bread with jam, water, milk, orange juice, tea and freshly brewed coffee. While small bites in the morning may be enough to ease hunger quickly, we still had to go outside for a decent meal that can last us until lunch time. Guests are free to use utensils, plates, cups, bowls and other things in the kitchen/dining area. Microwave and refrigerator can also be used by all.

    Price for Value:

When searching for a convenient and accessible budget hotel that’s near the subway station in South Korea, Casa Myeongdong Guesthouse is a nice choice. It’s a small but homey place in Seoul. Room types offered are: standard double, economy double, deluxe double, standard twin, duplex twin, triple, cabin-style, and family room. You may check this link out for more details on pricing. We paid about KRW 150,000 per night–divided by four people. All in all, price for value is fair.

  • Healthy Options Shopping Haul (September 2016)

Healthy Options Shopping Haul (September 2016)

It’s been said that money can’t buy happiness, but spending money for retail therapy certainly makes me feel good. 🙂 We waltzed into the temporary store of Healthy Options in Shangri-La Mall last month and shopped for items which did not only make us happy but also safe and secure. 😉 Opposite the temp store was a large banner which read “COMING SOON: HEALTHY OPTIONS BIGGEST STORE IN THE PHILIPPINES.” High-five to everyone who’s excited for this! How big will it be as compared to the one in Glorietta 2 in Makati? It’s only a matter of months until we all find out. Meanwhile, in this post, I’m sharing the items we got in September.

Healthy Options Shopping Haul (September 2016)

    Personal Care

I’ve always wanted to have whiter teeth for a brighter smile. 🙂 Instead of going to the “laser teeth whitening” route, I’m more open to try toothpastes with natural whitening agent. I’m happy that Healthy Options carries Jason Toothpaste Powersmile Vanilla Mint Fluoride-free Toothpaste. This prevents the formation of cavity causing plaque build-up with grapefruit’s seed extract, while freshening breath with smooth vanilla flavor followed by a kick of peppermint. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is present as a natural whitener that aids in the removal of stains, promoting a beautiful smile.

I’ve read so many good reviews about the T.N. Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Natural Astringent online, so it’s easy to fall in love with it at first glance. Witch hazel is the only toner you will ever need. It has a gentle, non-drying formula. It removes impurities and conditions the skin without disturbing its natural moisture balance. I use it after my facial cleanser and it works fine. Can’t miss this one! I love that it also comes in travel-size packaging.

I told my sister about the known dangers of using deodorant with aluminum chlorohydrate (which I shortly discussed here), and she was convinced to try out an aluminum, parabens and propylene glycol-free deodorant from Healthy Options. Lafe’s Deodorant Spray (Aloe) is odorless and it does not contain harmful chemicals. It sprays on easily, doesn’t cause itching, and doesn’t stain on clothing.

Ideal for damaged hair and split ends, Nature’s Gate Chamomile and Mimosa Bark Replenishing Shampoo smells really nice. The main reason why I got it was because this hair product assists in restoring color-treated hair and leaves it shiny, clean, and soft. Best of all, it’s sulfate-free! My sister uses Nature’s Gate Chamomile hair conditioner to take care of her ombre hair (see pic above).

Other things we got were Nature’s Gate Liquid Soap (very moisturizing and well packaged), Nature’s Gate Pomegranate Sunflower Velvet Moisture Body Wash, and Nature’s Gate Tea Tree Calming Shampoo. Yes, we’re such big fans of Nature’s Gate! 🙂

    Grocery

Christmas is fast approaching and Mom just wanted to try out Healthy Options’ sparkling juice so she can have a “taste test” before giving bottles away as gifts to friends in the holiday season. We chose the Sparkling Red Grape Juice. It’s non-alcoholic but refreshing nonetheless, a great alternative drink to champagne when celebrating a special occasion.

Other grocery products we brought home were: Bissinger’s Resealable Blueberries (I love eating these especially when I’m unhappy or stressed), Ocho Dark Chocolate Covered Peppermint (as a boost for lazy days), Beanfields Bean & Rice Chips Nachos (a perk-me-up snack while analyzing data at work), Popcorners Sweet Chili (my super fave gluten-free popcorn chips), American Honey (in cute bear packaging), Pacific Natural Foods Hazelnut Non-Dairy Beverage, and Natural Nectar Almond Coconut Spread (perfect to enhance toast, croissants, waffles, crepes, apples, bananas). 🙂

  • Food Rundown: Pork Dishes by Chef Phil Neil at Planet Grapes

Food Rundown: Pork Dishes by Chef Phil Neil at Planet Grapes

Planet Grapes-Shangri-La isn’t good only for one meal. I’ve been back several times and it keeps getting better and better. It’s a cool and elegant place serving fun yet sophisticated food, with wine at its core. Last week, I was invited here to taste fine dishes cooked and prepared by Chef Phil Neil, the head chef of Jamie Oliver Restaurant Group. Chef Phil visited the Philippines and we were pleased to have personally experienced his cooking at Planet Grapes. The theme of the night? Pork dishes, using quality pork straight from the UK. There’s no doubt about it. We were in for a special treat! 🙂

Food Rundown: Pork Dishes by Chef Phil Neil at Planet Grapes

For starters, the combination of skewered pork chops in garlic and oil, breaded pig ears in strips, and seasoned meatballs made of pork shoulder with scotch eggs was pretty much spot on across the board. Everything was well-constructed with great textures. The pig ears were light yet crisp to the bite; the pork chops, juicy; and the pork shoulder balls, hearty and meaty with a nice crispy sear on the outside and really moist inside. Satay sauce and the olives with chives tartar sauce served as perfect accompaniments to taste.

Braised to fork-tenderness for three hours, the pork cheeks were moist and relatively lean. Zesty notes of the carrot puree, shallots, and potatoes did a good job to complement the natural flavors of the pork.

Teeming with sweet and savory flavors, the pork ribs cooked with jasmine tea, ketchup, soy sauce, honey, and peanut butter and then topped with sesame seeds didn’t disappoint. Given the heft of the various elements, I didn’t expect them to be well-matched. Overall, the result was an enjoyable bomb of aromatics. Thumbs up!

Pork belly (liempo) delivered in spades. Oh baby, this is what dreams are made of. It demonstrated a mix of crispy and supple textures with fats, along with a heady, porky taste that was evened out by the brightness of veggies. Lentils, carrots, and thinly sliced onions gave a nice contrast, a refreshing respite from the hearty portions of pork.

Glorious pork ribs were back in action, but this time they were braised with apple sauce. It’s wonderful how the meat was infused with a sweet and succulent accent of apple. Not to be taken as a “meh” side dish, the roasted potato fries cooked in duck fat had gorgeous silkiness and golden-crisp edges. This is the type of thing you wake up in the middle of the night shaking for because you want it so bad! 😛

Lastly, the pork shoulder rubbed with salt and pepper showed off all the classic goodness that you’d expect in pork. It has got everything a killer dish should have: big on flavor, properly tender, and certainly praiseworthy with a hint of heat. I can imagine it would also be sublime in a sandwich or tacos. 🙂

And of course, when in Planet Grapes, whether it be a casual midweek lunch, a birthday throw-down, or a classy get-together with friends, it’s a must to dine in with wine. There’s a ton of variety to choose from. Get it by 1/4, 1/2, or one full glass, from the enomatic machine, or by the bottle.

We had the 2009 Chateau Siaurac, Lalande-de-Pomerol to drink through our sumptuous meal. This full-bodied red wine from France has a flexible structure and a long finish, with harmoniously interwoven notes of black currant, black cherry, licorice and underbrush.

Leche flan, crepe, turon and chocolate cake—you can’t go wrong with any of these for desserts. I highly recommend the leche flan which had rich, creamy, smooth, melt-in-your-mouth goodness. It’s sweet but not to the point where you’d reach a cheek-tingling sugar panic. So yummy! 🙂

Healthy Options Shopping Haul (August 2016)

Before anything else, I’d like to announce that Healthy Options has now launched a mobile app for members to access the Lifestyle News Digest, healthy recipes, customizable shopping lists and the digital membership card for tracking points. The app is available for Android and iOS users. At the store, simply show the digital card on your phone to the cashier to receive all discounts and rewards just like you would with your plastic card. Amazing!

Moving on to this post, here I’m sharing the grocery items we got from Healthy Options – Eastwood last month.

Healthy Options Shopping Haul (August 2016)

Quick bites: all different, all good

Introduced to my palates by Angel, Pretzel Perfection’s English Toffee Twists taste sweet and salty. These white chocolate-covered gluten-free pretzels are addicting with a capital A. These are great to brighten your mood, perk up your appetite, and maybe provide satisfaction when hunger pangs hit on the open road.

A stark contrast to the spicy and salty flavor profile of the English Toffee pretzels, the Pretzel Perfection Gluten Free Twice Baked Pretzel Sticks in Chipotle BBQ feature a blend of earthy smoked jalapeno and southwestern spices. The more you eat, the more you’re going to love it. These tasty treats are perfect for a quick snack at home while watching a movie, catching up with a TV series, doing homework, studying or just watching the sunset.

The All Natural Xpressos Dark Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans by Kimmie Candy taste bitter and sweet. It has combined the classic go-together flavors of coffee and chocolate, and for me, that is culinary heaven, a delightful coffee experience without drinking coffee. 😉 These mouthwatering espresso beans were roasted to perfection and then layered with a rich dark chocolate. The consistency of the bean size, the crunch and flavor, the chocolate coating thickness, the richness of the chocolate with strong coffee undertones, the perfect mixture of chocolate to coffee flavor—excellent!

    Breakfast buddies

Peanut butter with white chocolate? Hmmm, that definitely caught my attention. My hopeful spirit went down though when the taste of white chocolate was not as pronounced in the spread as expected. Nonetheless, this peanut butter tastes delicious for sandwiches. It’s good to be paired also with berries as a snack or as an ingredient in your favorite baked goods. It’s verified non-GMO, certified gluten-free, vegan and kosher. It doesn’t contain hydrogenated oil and also no high fructose corn syrup.

Our kitchen ran out of honey, so I got another bottle of Miller’s Smokey Bear American Wild Flower 100% U.S. Honey. This honey is gluten-free, fat-free, all-natural, contains no cholesterol, no trans-fats, and no sodium. Taste and consistency is good, and the container looks so cute. 🙂 But what’s more interesting about it is the story behind: In partnership with the USDA Forest Service, Smokey supports American beekeepers by sourcing honey directly from U.S. hives. A portion of the proceeds from every sale goes to support the educational efforts of wildfire prevention.

The Wild Garden Hummus Dip Roasted Garlic is another new breakfast favorite, best enjoyed as a topping for chips, pita break, or spread on sandwich. To make it even more flavorful, add lemon or olive oil to taste. This creamy garbanzo bean dip contains no preservatives and no cholesterol.

    Drinks

Smooth Move teas are my best bet in relieving occasional constipation. This is my third box of Smooth Move (I’ve tried the chocolate and peppermint flavors before), and I love that this herbal tea never fails to produce bowel movement within the next 6-12 hours after intake. It’s not medicine but a warm drink that’s best taken at bedtime so you can sleep easy knowing you’ll be right as rain in the morning.

With the aid of chamomile, this tea can also help ease stomach cramps and avoid gastrointestinal aggravation. Acting as a gentle narcotic, it assuages stress, a standout among the most widely recognized reasons for stomach torment. Drinking this makes me feel less bloated and most importantly, my tummy doesn’t cramp or feel painful or airy like it does when I take over-the-counter laxatives.

With just a small hint of vanilla, the Pacific Natural Foods Rice Non-Dairy Beverage is a refreshing alternative to dairy. It’s naturally sweet with no added sugar. The reason why I got it is that online reviewers say it’s by far the best rice milk ever. Finding rice milk that doesn’t have sunflower in it or some type of seed oil is difficult. Those who don’t have severe food allergies, on the other hand, can also appreciate drinking this with lattes, milkshake, smoothies, and hot choco or baking cookies, muffins, pancakes, etc.

Packaged in a glass “milk” jug, Silly Cow Sea Salt & Caramel is the third variety we tried from Silly Cow (after Peppermint Twist and Chocolate-Moo-usse). It’s my sister’s favorite hot chocolate drink that warms both inside and out. The powder contains natural cane sugar, Dutch processed cocoa (with alkali), natural vanilla, and sea salt and caramel flavor.

I also got Nature’s Gate: The Original Moisturizing Liquid Soap which has a very pleasing and refreshing smell that’s not overpowering. Texture is moisturizing and really nice. It leaves hands feeling clean and smooth. The attractive packaging looks good in bathrooms, kitchen, and laundry room and makes it a presentable gift to friends and relatives for the upcoming Christmas season.

Considering serious health implications of factory-farmed chickens, I thought it’s time to try organically grown chicken instead of chicken meat being sold in ordinary grocery stores. (To know more about the truth about factory farming, click here.) Mom cooked these Healthy Options chicken wings to make sibut 四物(four-herb Chinese soup) with dried roots, barks and herbs for dinner. Yummy!

Lastly, I bought another box of Nature’s Plus Ageless Kidney Support (90 tablets) for my grandfather. This product counters catabolic kidney distress with targeted protective antioxidants and factors of growth and renewal.

Tickles Flagship Store is now open in SM Megamall! If you’re looking for unique and novelty gift items for your friends or for yourself, this is the place to be. I remember visiting Tickles for the first time many years ago and found myself like a kid in a candy store. Everything looks very colorful and all goodies warrant attention. At 80 sqm, the size of the flagship store is about three times the size of any Tickles regular shop. This gives extra fun to shop around here, especially since Christmas is just a few months away. There are really lots of things waiting to be discovered! I went home happy with my purchases: large banana pillow (picture below), notebooks, sticky notes and memo blocks.

My top three favorite sections are:

  • Review of H.I.D. Burgers (City Golf Plaza, Ugong, Pasig City)

Review of H.I.D. Burgers (City Golf Plaza, Ugong, Pasig City)

H.I.D. Burgers? Immediately, the name got me curious. What does H.I.D. stand for? Apparently, it refers to “healthy and irresistibly delicious.” This restaurant inside the compound of City Golf Plaza serves the best flame-grilled gourmet burgers that are freshly made from 100% fresh chicken with no extenders. It’s the first branch of H.I.D. Burgers in Metro Manila, and just when demand for chicken burgers becomes overwhelming, checking this place out is an obviously nice move. The menu looks lean and simple but very cohesive, stocked with all kinds of goodness including not only burgers but also sausages, hot wings, nuggets and other specialties.

Review of H.I.D. Burgers (City Golf Plaza, Ugong, Pasig City)

    Ambiance:

H.I.D. Burgers has a laid-back ambiance that’s typical of a burger joint. It’s an easy option when you’re craving for burgers and quick bites after a golf session or a late-night hangout with friends. Plenty seats are available at the back, making up for a good sit-down experience. Overall vibe is colorful, bright, and festive which just suits the food.

    Service:

Since all burger patties are handcrafted and cooked upon order, expect to wait for several minutes before serving time. While this may be a good chance to start a conversation, relax, and appreciate the venue, others may possibly be bored…so consider yourself warned. If you’re really hungry, a witty workaround is to first get appetizers like the cheesy bacon wedge fries, chicken nuggets, or potato wedges. Ordering and payment are done through the counter, and the rest of their service experience takes place at the table.

    Food:

We started with the H.I.D. Burgers’ Chicken Nuggets (PhP 90 Half-Dozen/PhP 165 Full Dozen) and Hot Wings (PhP 180-6pcs/PhP 320-12 pcs), which both scored a few points in our book. 🙂 The deep-fried nuggets were tender, juicy, and excellent even without the dipping sauce (choice of either barbecue or garlic). Most fastfood restaurants’ nuggets deliver processed chicken meat for nuggets, but this version is more like boneless breaded chicken in bite-size pieces you can actually eat with rice. Love it!

Packed with bolder flavors, the hot wings are worth a try especially for fans of heat. Get them in six flavors: Buffalo Wings (Mild/Spicy), Sriracha Wings (Spicy), Hot Asian Wings (Mild/Spicy), Garlic Chili Patis Wings (Mild), Honey Mustard Wings (Mild), and Honey Sriracha Wings (Mild).

An exception to the “chicken-everything” menu, the H.I.D. Burgers’ Hungarian Sausage Slices (PhP 150) were appetizing and mildly spicy.

Elevating a staple to something special, the burgers here take a far more interesting twist, other than that they’re made of chicken. Instead of the usual hamburger bun, H.I.D. Burgers serve their patties with fluffy pan de sal-like bun! In the Philippines, pan de sal is a local bread that literally means “bread of salt.” When put together with the burger patty, taste results to sweet than salty.

H.I.D. burgers and sausages can be customized in multiple ways. Choose among winning combos such as Deluxe, Premium, Combo, Beastmode, and Big Dogg (with pure Hungarian Sausage) and enjoy burgers with add-ons like potato wedges, blue cheese, sour cream, Caesar dressing, salsa and bacon to your delight.

All burgers were seasoned properly and cooked the right way. The freshness, quality and flavor create an unquestionable gulf between the plethora of fast casual burger joints and the big boys of burgers. Surrounded by the awesome pan de sal bun, the thick chicken patties hold moistness well. They deserve a hearty round of applause and a meeting with your taste buds. 🙂 In no particular order:

Mediterranean (Big Dogg) with bell peppers, onions, and garlic sauce

Beastmode BLT (only beef burger in H.I.D.) with bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese sauce, mayo, and onions

Cheesebomb with cheese sauce, cream cheese and mozzarella

Barbecue & Coleslaw with special housemade BBQ sauce and refreshing coleslaw

    H.I.D. BLT Low Carb

    Price for Value:

With quality ingredients and ample burger-to-bun ratio, H.I.D. Burgers in Pasig can gather steam and make its way to your top 10 favorite burger restaurants list anytime soon. Beef burgers are everywhere but it’s also great to try new things if your heart so desires. Offering body, bite and flavor, H.I.D. Burgers’ chicken burgers are a welcome change. Prices are affordable and have good value. Get a decent meal for only PhP 200 or less.
