9 Most Instagrammable Places We Visited in Bangkok and Ayutthaya 2018

Months ago, my sister, mom, and I planned to visit Thailand to shop for clothes, try out street food, hop from one themed cafe to another, and explore the historic city of Ayutthaya. We did our research and realized that there’s plenty of views teeming with incredible photoshoot opportunities in Bangkok, Thailand. We made sure to include those that attracted us most into our 4D3N itinerary. For hotel accommodation, we stayed at Cubic Pratunam Hotel. Given another chance next time, an R&R in Thai mansions sounds good for a luxurious, one-of-a-kind getaway.

If you’re planning a trip to Bangkok soon and want to fill your social media feed with artistic and eye-catching photos, this post has you covered. Here are 9 Instagram-friendly places that will impress your friends and satisfy the foodie and travel junkie in you. 😉

9 Most Instagrammable Places We Visited in Bangkok and Ayutthaya 2018

    1. Terminal 21

Terminal 21 is a huge mall in central Bangkok that has a curvilinear glass-and-steel façade which resembles a 21st-century airport. The theme continues once you step inside. The information counter gave us a “passport” to help us navigate through the different floors. Each floor has a city theme.

For instance, there’s Paris, Rome, Istanbul, Tokyo, London… you know the drill. The brands of the stores in the floors correspond to the city they belong to. Rome on the ground floor features labels such as Kipling, Fox, CC:OO, Nike, Adidas, Levi’s, and more, while Paris on the M floor took us to the Champs-Élysées, where more fashion brands await.

The best thing is that the toilets are also themed accordingly. See how we had our fun photoshoot sessions in almost each one! The look and feel of the restrooms were awesome and the modern twist was delightful. 🙂 It was like flying from one city to another without having to travel far and experience jet lag.

For food hunting, we explored the basement level with Caribbean theme and found the Gourmet Market, take-away food outlets, and market-style food vendors. Pier 21 on the fifth floor offers a food court experience, but for lunch, we decided to eat in a restaurant called Have a Zeed for an authentic Thai meal.

    2. Unicorn Cafe

If you love colorful things and cute unicorn plushies, you’ll be so happy to stop by at this really adorable cafe. Unicorn Cafe in Bangkok is so Instagrammable! ♥

The interior is designed with a pastel explosion where unicorns are everywhere: wallpaper, murals, carpet, statues, pens, dolls and My Little Pony toys hanging from the ceiling, and of course, the menu. Unicorn onesies are available for rent at 150 baht. Oh, I wished I brought mine!

We had the unicorn rainbow waffle with ice cream and cones, rainbow-colored spaghetti with meatballs and cooked with a generous amount of lava cheese, and the juicy BBQ fried chicken wings. Everything was as great and as delicious as it looked. The staff were also game and kind to take our photos many times. 🙂 There’s neither a minimum amount to pay nor minimum number of dishes to order per person (unlike other themed cafes and restaurants). There’s also no entrance fee at the Unicorn Cafe.

Address: Sathorn Soi 8, 44/1 Sathon 8 Alley, Silom, Bang Rak, Bangkok 10500
How to go to Unicorn Cafe: Alight at BTS Chong-Non–Si Station, Exit 2. Walk towards Sathon Road then turn left for SathonSoi 8. (There is a 7/11 shop in front of Sathonsoi 8.) Enter Sahonsoi 8 for 100 metres.
Unicorn Cafe will be at the end of the street.

    Opening hours: 12nn – 8pm daily

    3. Perhaps Rabbits

Perhaps Rabbits is one of the most uniquely themed cafes in Bangkok. We couldn’t miss it! So despite the heavy traffic jam that afternoon, we followed our heart’s desire to join the whimsical mad tea party. But instead of tea, we had Rose Latte and paired it with Green Tea Bush (layered with green tea mousse, berry mousse and green tea cake, and then topped with Alice) and Blue Bunny Egg (a blueberry cheese pie with chocolate eggs blueberry cheesecake).

The cafe’s interior design was eclectic, with creative backdrops, abnormally small chairs, and wacky props that can entice the kid in you. We witness how the staff makes cakes and the amount of effort and detail put into the pastries. Perhaps Rabbits is certainly a delicious retreat into a scene of Alice in Wonderland. It satisfies both your sweet tooth and imagination in one visit.

Address: 5/1 Ekkamai 10 Alley, Khlong Tan Nuea, Watthana, Bangkok 10110, Thailand
Getting there: Take the BTS to Ekkamai station, exit 1, walk to Sukhumvit 63 and then take a taxi ride to Ekkamai soi 10
    Contact: +66 96 616 3314
    Opening hours: 9am – 9pm daily

    4. Bang Pa-In Royal Palace

We rented a van and hired a local tour guide/driver to make it convenient for us to roam around the Ayutthaya area. Else, we had to take public transport, ride a taxi, the BTS, or tuktuk, walk x miles, and probably end up wasting so much time asking the locals how to go to our next destination.

We spent an hour in this picturesque and very photogenic place. The Bang Pa-In Royal Palace is a royal compound with buildings in Thai, Chinese, and European style. Glad my #bkk travel buddies were always so game to pose for the camera! The backdrops looked so beautiful. Funny story: We had no idea that skirts and pants should be long enough to cover until the ankle and sleeveless tops aren’t allowed. We borrowed skirts and my mom had to wear her sweater despite the super hot weather. She just removed it for this shot. Couldn’t take the heat anymore lah! 拜托 😁😂🤣 #travel #bangkok #traveldiary #travelbkk #bangpain #bangbainroyalpalace #travelblogger #vacation #family #royalpalace #mirrorlessrevolution #fujifilm #fujifilmph #fujifeed #fujixt2

A post shared by Rochkirstin Sioco 👑 (@rochkirstin) on

The ancient city of Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just an hour away from Bangkok and the incredible old city ruins make it a Thailand must-visit. Our first stop was the Bang Pa-In Royal Palace. It’s also known as the Summer Palace, a palace complex formerly used by the Thai kings. It lies beside the Chao Phraya River in Bang Pa-in District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province.

The park comprises several iconic buildings with various architectural styles that are interesting for their diversity. There’s a Chinese-style royal palace, a colorfully-painted lookout tower, and traditional simple residences.

Bang Pa-in Royal Palace was renovated in the late 19th century by the then King Chulalongkorn. He was clearly inspired by some of the architecture and styles of the great palaces in countries like England and France. This explains why some structures have European influences in terms of design.

Opening hours: 8:30am – 4:30pm daily. Tickets are sold until 3:30pm. Tel: 035-260144
Dress Code: Proper attire is required. No short skirts or short pants and no sleeveless shirts.

    5. Wat Yai Chaimongkon

Wat Yai Chai Mongkol (or Mongkhon) is located a few kilometers southeast of Ayutthaya. The monastery was constructed by King U-Thong to accommodate the monks that were ordained by Phra Wanratana Mahathera Burean. This monastery was named “Wat Pakaew.” Afterwards, Phra Wanratana of Wat Pa Kaew suggested to King Naresuan the Great to build a Chedi (pagoda). He decided to construct a large Chedi in this monastery. This monastery became known as Wat Yai Chiamongkhon.

The most iconic structures here for me are the rows of Buddha images lining the courtyard around the central stupa. These statues were newly sculpted to replace those which collapsed through the time. The statues are all identical and before gilded. The bases contain the ashes of the dead.

    6. Wat Mahathat

Wat Mahathat is another restored ruin of a Buddhist monastery. It’s a Khmer-styled temple consisting primary of laterite structures (instead of sandstone) and bricks, enhanced with stucco. It’s one of the most important monasteries of the Ayutthaya kingdom, not only because it was the religious center and enshrined relics of the Buddha, but also because of its proximity to the Grand Palace.

The structure has been registered as a national historic site by the Fine Arts Department on 8 March 1935 and is part of the Ayutthaya World Heritage Historical Park.

    7. Wat Phra Si Sanphet

Wat Phra Si Sanphet was the most important temple in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Being part of the Royal Palace complex, the very large monastery with dozens of structures was used by Ayutthaya Kings only. It was a royal temple without resident monks and was used exclusively for royal ceremonies.

Sadly, Wat Phra Si Sanphet was largely destroyed by the Burmese armies in 1767, leaving only its three massive stupas standing. It was set on fire. Restoration work began in 1956. The remaining debris still evidently portrays how glorious the royal monastery was. Currently, this temple is regarded as the symbol of Ayutthaya province.

    8. Wat Chaiwatthanaram

Wat Chaiwatthanaram was built following the concepts of the Khmer mountain temples of Angkor to symbolize the universe in Buddhist and Hindu cosmology. It was constructed in 1630 by King Prasat Thong, and it’s one of the grandest monuments of the Ayutthaya Kingdom.

The King built the temple as a means to gain Buddhist merit and as a memorial to his mother. Her ashes are enshrined in two square chedis flanking the ubosot on the East side of the temple.

As canon balls and canons were dug up during excavations, historians believe the temple may have been used as a fortress during the last war with Burma. The monastery was looted and largely destroyed by the Burmese armies in 1767 after which it was deserted. Wat Chaiwatthanaram was restored by the Fine Arts Department during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

    9. My Kitchen in Siam Discovery

In the last day before our flight to Manila, we purposefully went to Siam Center to see Mr Jones’ Orphanage, as it’s one of the most talked about themed cafes in Bangkok. Unfortunately, we were informed that it’s already closed (not closed because it was already late when we got in but closed as in business closure). We resorted to the food court instead, hoping to find other exciting dishes to satisfy our palate. And there at the top floor was My Kitchen.

My Kitchen in Siam Discovery houses six different restaurants under one roof, and each one serves a different kind of cuisine: Thai from Nara, Isaan from Cafe Chilli, Japanese from Yuzu by Yuutaro, Cantonese from Man Fu Yuan, Western comfort food from Kuppadeli and desserts from Brix. The tabletops were in swirling shapes, the floor was made with white Volakas marble, the ceiling was so attractive with circular white tiles, and there were even disco balls in the reception area. We enjoyed the musical accompaniment which we learned is playing any Friday or Saturday from 6pm.

Aside from the setup, what we also found fascinating were the tablet and the mobile credit card machines attached to the tables. How innovative! Instead of roaming around like you would at a buffet restaurant or in a typical food court, diners can use the tablet to order food with reference to the menus displayed and then pay later at the table, too. We opted to pay in cash though, so we still had to go to the counter for payment.

    Wrap Up

This was the third time I visited Thailand, but the experience has been different each time. Our recent trip has been a mix of the typical can’t-miss shopping areas in Bangkok and tourist sites in the Ayutthaya area. We love this vibrant “city of angels” with all its tasty dishes, modern buildings, lush parks, big shopping malls and markets, and notable and truly Instagrammable ancient temples.

There are still many hidden gems waiting to be discovered. We’re happy that we were able to follow our planned itinerary without any problem, thanks to the BTS, tuktuk, and Thailand’s some friendly and helpful people. There was never a dull moment with my mom and my sister! Now, where do we go next? 🙂

  • Review of Cubic Pratunam Hotel (Bangkok, Thailand)

Review of Cubic Pratunam Hotel (Bangkok, Thailand)

Cubic Pratunam Hotel is a modern 3-star hotel with 50 rooms + 44 dorms (hostel) located in the heart of Bangkok. We booked our accommodation through agoda.com and were quite satisfied with the experience. We chose to stay here primarily because of its close proximity to shopping areas and the commercial and entertainment district (the likes of MBK Mall, Siam Centre, Platinum Fashion Mall, Siam Paragon, Silom, and Sukhumvit). From Suvannabhumi International Airport, it took us about 40 minutes to arrive by BTS Airport Link (high-speed train). The closest station is Phayathai Station.

Review of Cubic Pratunam Hotel (Bangkok, Thailand)

    Ambiance:

Cubic Pratunam Hotel features a restaurant, a 24-hour fitness center, and a coffee shop/café. The atmosphere looks sleek and simple without grand interiors, cracking views, and the fluff of extravagance. There’s free WiFi in public areas, free self parking, and a free area shuttle. Additionally, concierge services, dry cleaning, and laundry facilities are available onsite.

The hotel is family-friendly, with a huge lounge area that’s bright and airy. Across the reception counter is a massage section. Guests can have a massage either here or in their appointed rooms. Treatments span from Thai deep tissue massage, regular whole body massage, to foot massages–all with a powerful mix of acupressure and stretching to help reduce inflammation and muscle tension.

The room looked exactly as the picture. It was clean, comfortable, and well-kept. It was spacious enough for the three of us. We got an extra bed for my sister, since this room was originally arranged with two single beds. Inside, there were conveniences like refrigerator and coffee maker, a vault, TV with cable channels, free bottled water, and a hair dryer. The bathroom was clean, which was really important to me. Complete toiletries were not provided though (only the basics like shampoo, conditioner, and shower cap), so it was a good thing that we brought our own toothbrush, toothpaste, and soap.

    Service:

Cubic Pratunam Hotel is nothing close to an exquisite luxury hotel when it comes to design and style, but it has warm and professional service that we were happy about. The staff can speak and understand English, and they were nice to guide us on the best routes to go when traveling. They provided us with a map of the area with walking times and distances to the city’s major attractions.

There’s a complimentary tuktuk transfer ride from the hotel to three predetermined locations: Phayathai Station, Pratunam Market, and somewhere downtown near the shopping areas. It goes back to the hotel every 10 minutes to pick up a new batch of passengers. It’s also one call away, if you want to be fetched anywhere from the three points. This free service encourages guests to explore the neighborhood and discover street food options and sights nearby.

    Food:

Mellow Cafe and Restaurant will ensure you’re full and good to go for the day. It offers a variety of food for breakfast—rice, bread with jam and butter, eggs, sausages, some local Thai dishes, soup, and drinks like coffee, tea, juices, and water. It’s also open for lunch and dinner. Operating hours are from 6:30am to 11:00pm daily.

    Price for Value:

Cubic Pratunam Hotel doesn’t come with state-of-the-art amenities but we had a convenient stay. The efficient service, delicious casual food, and nice location make up a good experience in this hotel. We paid around P1500++ per night for a superior room, or around P500++ per person (when divided by three). It’s a low-budget hotel and a recommended one. Consider Cubic Pratunam when visiting Bangkok for a few days.

  • 4 Factors That Cause Premature Skin Aging

4 Factors That Cause Premature Skin Aging

Aging is inevitable. The slow but steady progression of time makes itself known in various parts of the body, but nowhere does it show more than in the face, where the skin is thinner and much more delicate and therefore prone to showing more signs of aging.

Skin aging can be divided into 2 categories. It can be intrinsic, which refers to age-related changes that are beyond your control, such as heredity and other genetic factors, hormones, and cellular recession. Extrinsic aging refers to aging brought about by factors you can eliminate with a few lifestyle changes. This post talks about skin aging and how it’s best to be managed.

4 Factors That Cause Premature Skin Aging

    1. Sun Exposure

The appearance of age spots has less to do with our actual chronological age than it does with consistent unprotected exposure to the sun. Experts have gone so far as to claim that about 70% of skin aging is dependent on how much sunlight we expose our skin to throughout life.

    sun exposure skin aging

Solar radiation is responsible for the accelerated destruction of collagen fibers in the skin via a process called oxidation. When collagen fibers become rigid and fragile from their initial elastic state, a phenomenon called solar elastosis occurs—also called photo aging.

To combat this, avoid staying out for too long under the sun, and make a habit of applying sunscreen before going out. If you are fond of having a tan, consider using a self-tanner instead of acquiring a tan the natural way by baking under the sun. Use makeup and skincare products that provide an adequate amount of SPF protection— the more you layer, the more protected you’ll be. In regards to skincare products, it is highly recommended to use natural-based products as they can help your skin to protect its microbiome. Natural and organic products will not only protect your skin but will also serve as a healthy barrier preventing the penetration of any harmful bacteria. Such natural ingredients as avocado, honey, coconut, or goat milk are great options for taking care of your skin. If you want to keep your skin hydrated you can use avocado soaps while for nourishing pure goat milk soaps will do wonders. All these natural ingredients can serve as great remedies for dry skin and maintain healthy pH levels.

    1. Diet

A diet that’s high in fat and simple sugars and refined carbohydrates ages you from within: it makes the skin’s connective tissue rigid, therefore losing elasticity. Switching your sweets and fries out for leafy greens and fresh fruits can go a long way towards making you look and feel younger. These foods are rich in antioxidants, so they help fight free radicals that can cause all sorts of chronic disease. Plus, they are also able to mitigate if not reverse excess oxidative damage caused by prolonged sun exposure. Look into adding more foods that contain lycopene, lutein, beta-carotene, and vitamin C to your daily meals.

    1. Smoking and Drinking

Everyone knows what happens when you overindulge in alcohol and cigarettes—liver disease and lung cancer to name a few. Smoking and drinking also contribute to premature skin aging. Smoking constricts the flow of blood and oxygen to the skin tissue, both of which are necessary for the skin to stay healthy and supple. This activity can also cause the appearance of fine age lines around the eyes and above the upper lip, making you look older than you actually are.

Similarly, drinking alcohol deprives the body of hydration, which is essential to younger-looking skin. In both cases, you can expect dullness and discoloration in addition to poor muscle tone and lack of skin elasticity. This can lead to a saggy neck which can add years to your face. If you smoke, quit while you’re ahead, and try to imbibe less alcohol in general. Combat sagging neck skin with YEOUTH’s Neck Firming Cream, which is infused with argireline and green tea that deliver age-defying results with every use.

    1. Stress

Stress can affect your skin in different ways— it can cause you to get less sleep, which results in eye bags and a sallow complexion. The faces you make when you are stressed can also have an effect on facial wrinkling; that is, it makes them more likely to appear.

    Wrap Up

While it may not always be possible to keep the clock back, a few lifestyle changes can go a long way towards maintaining your youthful glow. Just by eating well, staying hydrated, and protecting your skin from the sun, you can give your skin a chance to recover from the damage. Ridding yourself of a few bad habits can also benefit not just your skin but your overall quality of life. If signs of aging continue to plague you, please see a dermatologist for personalized care.

  • My 10 Favorite Skincare Products of 2017 from Healthy Options

My 10 Favorite Skincare Products of 2017 from Healthy Options

Thousands of all-natural skincare products are formulated every year, but only a few are worthy to be included in your favorite list. In this post, I will be sharing a roundup of the products that really worked well for my skin. These are the products that deserve 5/5 stars for consistency, quality, and reliability. Since I have realized the benefits of using only all-natural and organic products especially for the skin, I get my skincare items from Healthy Options. Without further ado, here are my favorite and most recommended holy-grail items that I call “revolutionary” and a must-try for everyone.

My 10 Favorite Skincare Products of 2017 from Healthy Options

    1. Derma E Radiant Glow Face Oil by SunKissAlba (PhP 925)

My morning and evening skincare routine won’t be complete without this Radiant Glow Face Oil by SunKissAlba. It’s a trending product on Instagram with a reason: it illuminates the skin and adds hydration instantly. Derma E collaborated with SunKissAlba to create a luxurious oil that can give you an unforgettable glow. I love using products that are eco-ethical and cruelty-free like this one because it’s guilt-free and it makes me happy!

If you like having golden bits on your face and body without looking too much of a diva, give this oil a try. It leaves the skin so supple and soft like a baby’s bum. I put 2-3 drops and apply it with my ring finger on my forehead, cheeks, nose and then do a piano tap motion and massage it gently onto the skin. It’s two skincare steps in one: while most face oils tend to moisturize and sit more on the surface of skin, this one penetrates and quenches like a serum while giving the dewy, smoothing benefits of an oil.

Luscious organic Jojoba Oil and replenishing organic Argan Oil moisturize to help combat dehydration and the appearance of wrinkles while promoting radiance. Rejuvenating organic Seabuckthorn Oil helps to smooth and add shine while mineral-rich Mica adds a natural-looking brilliance to your skin.

    2. T.N. Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Astringent (PhP 365 for 16oz, PhP 285 for 8oz)

This is the only 100% natural astringent that effectively cleanses, soothes and treats everyday skin irritations, without over-drying or leaving behind irritating residue. It’s gentle enough for daily use on face and body to relieve oily, irritated, red, damaged and blemished skin.

I apply this using my bare fingers or with a cotton pad. I never sleep in makeup. After washing my face, I apply witch hazel about three days in a week, and I noticed my skin is clearer. T.N. Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Astringent is also useful in taking acne scars away and making my skin less oily on top of it. It may not work for all skin types, but it’s doing justice to my skin!

    3. Avalon Organics Intense Defense with Vitamin C Oil-Free Moisturizer (PhP 599)

This is a lightweight cream that rehydrates the skin for improved texture and elasticity. It’s not only my favorite but my husband’s favorite as well! We share this item and we apply this every night. One tub goes a long way. It took us more than six months to empty it. The Avalon Organics Intense Defense with Vitamin C Oil-Free Moisturizer is the quickest fix for dry, tired skin.

My husband’s skin is more sensitive so he’s thankful he found a product that’s gentle on the skin and doesn’t contain parabens, harsh sulfates, preservatives, synthetic colors, and fragrances. Avalon Organics Intense Defense with Vitamin C Oil-Free Moisturizer nourishes with soft, non-greasy hydration while energizing skin for a smoother, firmer, more youthful appearance.

    4. Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay (PhP 525)

This product is known as the “world’s most powerful facial.” It’s a total skin-repairing powerhouse! Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay contains 100% natural calcium bentonite clay for deep pore cleaning and it doesn’t contain additives, fragrances, and animal products. It definitely clears the skin and leaves it soft! This facial mask helps to remove dirt and impurities from the pores and it’s also kind of exfoliating. It gives noticeable improvement in skin complexion and it removes stubborn blackheads.

Directions are simple: Mix Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay with equal parts of apple cider vinegar or water. Use a glass, pottery or wooden bowl. Stir the mixture until is a smooth paste then add more clay or liquid as needed. Apply a 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch thick layer of clay to the face or other areas and let it dry. Drying times vary, but times suggested is 5 minutes for delicate skin and 15-20 minutes for normal skin.

You will feel a pulling and tightening sensation, deep pore cleansing! Believe me, it’s quite the experience. Remove the clay by washing with warm water. Expect a slight redness to appear after removing the clay. This is normal and will disappear in approximately 30 minutes.

    5. Derma E CoQ10 Super Repair Cleanser (PhP 675)

I use two types of cleanser for my face daily. One of which is this Derma E CoQ10 Super Repair Cleanser, an antioxidant-rich, sulfate-free cleanser that lathers away dirt, oil, makeup and impurities, promoting fresh, healthy, youthful looking skin. What I love most about this product is that it’s so gentle and it’s very fragrant. This facial wash is doctor-developed with potent antioxidants CoQ10, pomegranate, green tea, and Vitamins A, C and E that defend the skin against daily stress, leaving it fresh, revitalized and youthful-looking.

    6. Derma E Hydrating Scrub with Hyaluronic Acid (PhP 675)

This is the other facial cleanser I use also every day. Derma E Hydrating Scrub with Hyaluronic Acid is a creamy exfoliant that buffs away impurities and dull surface cells without over drying. It leaves the skin soft, smooth, and luminous. Hyaluronic Acid delivers intense moisture, and walnut Shell Powder provides gentle yet effective exfoliation, lifting away dullness. I love the grainy feel of it and the deep clean it gives my face. When you take skincare seriously and are always on the hunt for the next gen of game-changing skincare products, this should be in your list.

    7. Lafe’s Natural Deodorant Spray (PhP 245)

Many years ago, I read an article that changed the way I view deodorants in the market. Using all-natural deodorants that don’t contain aluminum is the only way to go. The problem with antiperspirants is that they clog up your pores so the wetness doesn’t eek out. The ingredient that clogs up the pores is aluminum chloride, which has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease and breast cancer. Neither of these claims has been scientifically proven, but there’s enough concern about them that some respected doctors warn us to avoid using aluminum in our beauty and skincare products.

I also choose to use ones that contain no parabens because I don’t want to put anything evil on my skin. Lafe’s natural deodorant is an effective spray formula. It’s a lavender-scented organic deodorant made with lavender essential oils to keep you calm, relaxed, and feeling fresh. The natural botanical essential oils fight odor-causing bacteria without the use of harmful chemicals.

Lafe’s Natural Deodorant Spray is made with certified organic ingredients and is aluminum free, gluten free, and propylene glycol free. It comes in several different fragrances, but I have only tried the lavender and unscented variants. Pick the one you love most.

    8. Nature’s Gate Aloe Vera Body Wash (PhP 295)

This fortifying aloe vera body wash awakens the senses with a blend of Aloe, Blue Malva, and Sweet Almond Oil. It has a sweet smell that reminds me of candy or bubblegum, but it doesn’t carry long after washing. It suds up easily, doesn’t dry my skin, and it makes good foam. One bottle of Nature’s Gate Aloe Vera Body Wash goes a long way. It’s vegan, gluten-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, phthalate-free, and cruelty-free. I just wish it also comes in a smaller size container so we can bring it during travels.

    9. Lafe’s Organic Lip Balm Unflavored (PhP 135)

I have tried and tested so many lip balms in the past, and only Lafe’s Organic Lip Balm Unflavored has worked really well on my lips. This USDA-certified organic lip balm is made with beeswax, vitamin E, and natural oils, providing moisture without the use of harmful chemicals. It doesn’t leave the lips chalky or chapped. It’s the perfect consistency! I use it every day under lipstick or alone whenever I feel like my lips need care and nourishing.

No matter how much abuse your lips has endured in your lifetime (toxic lipsticks and such), it’ll feel pretty much new again after you apply this lip balm consistently for a few days.

    10. Avalon Organics – Lavender Luminosity Daily Moisturizer Unscented (PhP 475)

I’m obsessed with this moisturizer! The consistency is light but truly feels comforting on skin. I use it under my makeup and I’ve noticed that makeup looks smoother and doesn’t seem to get greasy either. It really feels liberating when you know that you’re putting only natural ingredients and not chemicals on your skin.

Avalon Organics Lavender Luminosity Daily Moisturizer is a hypo-allergenic lotion that hydrates and visibly brightens for renewed radiance. This moisturizer is infused with kombucha that helps smooth the skin’s surface to enhance radiance and antioxidant-rich grape seed polyphenols that help the skin fend off damaging free radicals and maintain a velvety softness. It also has hyaluronic acid which helps enhance the skin’s moisture retention. As a result, the skin feels softer and appears more luminous.

    Wrap Up

There’s a case to be made that using organic skin care products is better. Okay, maybe they’re not life-or-death necessary in the same sense as water, oxygen, and food are—but when it comes to fortifying one’s inner and outer glow, there’s nothing like natural skincare products to lift your mood. They can be more expensive but the price for value is considerable. Whether you’re looking for an occasional #treatyourself splurge or you’re ready to indulge in a quality skin care haul in Healthy Options, consider getting these personal favorites. 🙂

The monthly membership gives access to search, book, and enjoy fitness classes at the top studio and healthy living perks across Asia. Yes, not only in the Philippines!

    My Experience with GuavaPass

It was in November when I first subscribed to GuavaPass lite (P499 for four classes). I just wanted to try the fitness program and get to know more about how it works. I like the concept of not having to pay for gym and fitness center memberships. The financial burden and pressure of going to class to maximize the annual or semi-annual cost can easily add up to stress.

GuavaPass gives users the ability to “hop” from one studio to another with ease and without the requirement of purchasing multiple packages from each. Don’t like a class or a studio? Drop it and book another class next time, easy peasy. There’s no need to commit to one studio!

    Signing Up and Booking Classes

To register, you need to create a GuavaPass account and choose your class package to subscribe to. A Class Package allows users to take a certain number of classes across different studios. All classes must be used within their designated timeframe or they will expire.

Once the classes are all used up before the expiration dates, you can buy an additional class package to keep on sweating! The number of times you may visit a studio varies depending on the Class Package and will be noted on the billing page before you purchase. Booking multiple classes in advance is accepted, which is great to get you motivated for the week ahead.

It took me only a couple of minutes to complete the sign-up and booking process and settle into the groove. I paid using my credit card online, viewed the studio partners, the activities available in the neighborhood, and booked my first classes.

    GuavaPass Variety of Classes

There are so many classes to choose from, and the large variety can be overwhelming. I usually filter them based on schedule (time is after work hours during weekdays and in the morning on weekends) and location (always Quezon City since my home and office are both in QC). Booking of classes can be done through the website or via the GuavaPass mobile app. Both interfaces and navigation are intuitive and user-friendly.

Activities covered in the membership include cycling, circuit training, CrossFit, personal training, parkour, martial arts, pole dancing, Zumba, gymnastics, barre, yoga, Pilates and meditation, along with classes for soon-to-be or new mothers. Once you know your favorite classes, it’s a matter of building up a routine that you’re comfortable with.

    Cross-Country Use

If you’re a frequent traveler and one who’s into workout and fitness, GuavaPass is best for you. Once you’re subscribed to GuavaPass, you have access to all the fitness partners where GuavaPass is available. Their current locations outside of Manila are: Singapore, Bangkok, Dubai, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Phuket, Seoul, Shanghai, and Taipei. You can’t “pause” your membership so it’s better to take advantage of your subscription whenever and wherever you can.

    GuavaPass Manila’s Studio Partners

GuavaPass is definitely for someone who like switching gyms after two weeks and try diverse classes. You’re guaranteed to find a handful of activities and studio partners you’ll love.

Currently, GuavaPass Manila has partnered with 65 studios. These include: 360 Fitness Club Manila (Circuit Training / HIIT, Core, Dance, Martial Arts, Yoga), Archery 1O1 (Sports), Beast House Pole And Aerial Dance Studio (Dance, Pole / Aerial, Zumba), Beyond Yoga (Anlene, Circuit Training / HIIT, Dance, Pole / Aerial, Yoga, Zumba), Stardance Elite Pole, Dance & Aerial Arts Studio (Dance, Pilates, Pole / Aerial) and many more.

As you continue to return to specific studios, the trainers will begin to recognize you and will actually cater to your specific fitness needs, which makes for an incredibly challenging and fun workout.

    Review of 5 Studio Partners

    1. Studio: Yoga Tree Manila (Unit A312, 3F Eastwood Mall, 116 Eastwood Avenue, Bagumbayan, Libis, Quezon City)
    Yogatreemanilalogo
    Class: Bikram Yoga
    Date: Thu, Nov 16
    Time: 7:30pm – 9:00pm

Yoga Tree Manila is very convenient. It’s walking distance away from our office. It was my first time to attend a class using my GuavaPass membership. I mentioned my name and “GuavaPass” to the counter and they immediately acknowledged me to join the class. I brought my own yoga mat (rental fee is P50) and towel (rental fee is P50). Amenities of the studio include: showers, changing area, bottled water (for sale), bathroom.

The yoga instructor started with a briefing and she told me the background and description of Bikram Yoga. It’s a set program of yoga popularized in the 1970s by Bikram Choudhury. The class runs for 90 minutes and consists of the same series of 26 postures, including two breathing exercises. The room is always heated to 40 °C (104 °F) with a humidity of 40%.

Bikram yoga is a dialogue-lead class. The instructor, unlike other dance classes I attended, didn’t actively do the poses in front for us to copy. Instead, she just verbally told us what to do next and reminded us to keep breathing through the nose. As a beginner, I looked at the other people in the room beside me to check if I was doing alright.

Overall, Bikram yoga is painful but satisfying. It involves a lot of stretches and the health benefits are that it detoxifies the body (open pores to let toxins out), thins the blood to clear the circulatory system, increases heart rate for better cardiovascular workout, improves strength by putting muscle tissue in optimal state for reorganization, and reorganizes the lipids (fat) in the muscular structure. In an ideal class, everyone moves together and the energy becomes cumulative hence stronger practice.

    2. Studio: yoga+ Ortigas (Level 4 The Podium, ADB Avenue, Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong)
    Yoga logo
    Class: Yin Yoga
    Date: Sun, Nov 19
    Time: 10:00am – 11:00am

yoga+ in Ortigas is a “healthy” space that’s very much suitable for yoga practice. They have special flooring in the yoga room to provide traction during classes. This provides practitioners with the right amount of support for the feet but at the same time, give enough cushion to prevent bruised knees and elbows. It’s also environmental friendly since it’s made from recycled materials that is non-toxic even in a heated environment.

Compared to Bikram Yoga, Yin Yoga was more challenging for me mentally and physically. It’s a slow-paced style of yoga with postures, or asanas, that are held for longer periods of time (from 45 seconds to two minutes, to five minutes or more). A regular Yin Yoga practice can calm and balance the mind and body, reduce stress and anxiety, increase circulation, improves flexibility, release fascia, improve joint mobility, and improve the flow of chi or prana through meridian stimulation.

Yin Yoga is certainly the opposite of dynamic yoga I’m accustomed to. Emotions, thoughts, and feeling have to be kept in the shadows. The principle is to stress the tissue so the body will respond by strengthening it. We started with a quiet meditation and breathing exercises. We were seated most of the time, and the poses targeted mostly the knees, pelvis, sacrum, and spine. My feet and my back hurt a lot, and I was silently hoping for the class to be finished sooner! 🙂

Yin Yoga was a struggle for me, and I wouldn’t want to try it again next time. Haha! Despite this, I love the ambiance and amenities at yoga+ Ortigas. This gym focuses on journey and self-improvement and the beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows is the perfect environment to begin your Yoga journey.

Bringing of your own yoga mat is not necessary; there’s no need to rent. This studio has high quality Manduka mats which are made from recycled, non-toxic materials. The use of yoga and bath towels and shower toiletries are also included in the package. An alkaline water dispenser is available for everyone’s use. I came with a water bottle and in yoga clothes. Everything was all set!

    3. Studio: Beyond Yoga Greenhills (333 P. Guevarra Corner N Averilla Street, San Juan)
    22014867 10154626522646261 878031021 n
    Class: Zumba & Anti-Gravity Yoga
Date: Fri, Dec 08 & Thu, Dec 28
    Time: 7:30pm – 8:30pm

    Beyond
is the biggest full-service yoga studio chain in the Philippines. Beyond Yoga in Greenhills has a spacious interior, offering a variety of classes which aim to teach people the basics and foundation of yoga. It combines traditional yoga practice with soothing music and dynamic movements.
Beyond Yoga Greenhills is a good studio for beginners and experts alike. There were mirrors on the front and back so we could see everyone’s movements. The room was cleaned before the class started and afterwards. Changing area and bathroom were also tidy and neat.

I tried to Zumba, a Latin-inspired dance fitness program, which incorporates hip-hop, samba, salsa, merengue, cumbia, mambo, reggaeton, soca, flamenco, chachacha, tango and some belly dancing and bhangra. It’s more like aerobics with a contagious blend of Latin and international rhythms. We had a great session. I had fun and perspired a bit after the one-hour dance. The Zumba instructor was approachable, well experienced, and energetic. My classmates were all regulars and members of Beyond Yoga who have become friends.

On another day, I tried anti-gravity yoga and fell completely in love with it. Thank goodness, I was alone in the class and the instructor was super helpful in showing me how to do the inverted poses. Anti-gravity yoga basically makes use of the huge silk hammock to help with the stretches and do various poses. I managed to do four inverted aerial yoga poses. My face was flush red while hanging upside down but I was fine. The feeling was glorious! This type of yoga should be skipped though if you’re pregnant, have heart failure, defined spinal problems, or glaucoma.

    4. Studio: PlanaFORMA (3rd Floor, Il Terrazzo, Tomas Morato, Quezon City)
    Forma logo
    Activity: Barre
    Class: Upgraded! Forma CORE+
    Date: Sun, Dec 10
    Time: 9:00am – 10:00am
Plana FORMA is a barre technique that is an exciting synergy of dance, pilates and yoga. This studio, named after the workout, features barre classes that are ever-challenging. It charges P30 for locker rental and P20 for towel rental. Non-slip socks are required to take the class. I didn’t have non-slip socks so I bought a pair at the studio at P350.
Upgraded! Forma CORE+ is a high-impact workout that pushes yourself to your limit. It targets and tones those hard to reach areas such as the arms, abs, seat and thighs using ones own bodyweight as the point of resistance. The pace was moderate to fast, high-intensity all throughout with recovery stretches at the end.
The techniques were dynamic and highly rewarding. I could feel my muscles burning every minute as we lifted weights, did serious stretches, and performed basic but repeated exercises like jumping jacks, push-ups, sit-ups, calf raises, crunches, squats, etc. Completing the class really felt like winning a battle. I was so happy when it was through!
    5. Studio: Beyond Yoga Quezon City (3rd Floor, Il Terrazzo, Tomas Morato, Quezon City)

    Bylogosept2013

    Activity: Yoga
    Class: Vinyasa 1
    Date: Wed, Dec 27
    Time: 7:30pm – 8:45pm

Beyond Yoga QC is on the same floor as PlanaFORMA in Il Terrazo so I decided to visit it another day. Out of all yoga routines, Vinyasa yoga is the most familiar to me since I had practiced it several times before when I was active in Fitness First.

In Vinyasa yoga classes, students coordinate movement with breath to flow from one pose to the next. The poses are fast-paced and are linked to an inhale and an exhale. The instructor kept the flow of movements smooth and continuous, which helped us stay present during the session.

Like in Beyond Yoga Greenhills, the changing area in Beyond Yoga QC looked clean. Lockers, yoga mats, and shower areas are available without additional cost. This studio is accessible to residents of QC since it’s located at the heart of Tomas Morato. Despite being a full class, there was a silence rule as soon as you entered the room which everyone observed and lead to a very calming experience. The instructor gave clear instructions and paid extra-attention to newbies. After the class, the lights stayed off; practicing yoga here is a brilliant way to de-stress after a long day of work.

Wrap Up: GuavaPass Pros and Cons

    Pros:

    • Vast selection of activities – This ranges from martial arts and yoga to crossfit, indoor cycling, and running. Whatever you choose, make sure it helps you to focus on achieving your fitness goals in the most fun, efficient, and safest way possible!
    • Easy to navigate – The site is one of the easiest to work around and to keep track on your progress.
    • Convenience factor – GuavaPass memebership includes classes in all studio partners in the Philippines and any of the affiliated countries, as mentioned above. This allows you to continue your fitness journey even when travelling.
    • Informative class details – Each class is explained before you sign up, so you can select something suited to your personal preference. The worst thing is walking in and realizing you’ve signed up to something you hate. Finding classes is also easy. Once you book the class, the address details are clear and linked to GoogleMaps.
    • Give as gift – Give your friends and family the ultimate gift of a healthy lifestyle. Two gift packages are available: GuavaPass 4 Class Package Gift (P1099) and GuavaPass 1 month Unlimited Gift (P1949).
    • Engage and socialize – You can take classes rather than working out alone. If you can find a fitness training buddy, the experience is made even more enjoyable. You won’t feel as self-conscious and you will be more encouraged to work out.
    • Professional guidance – It’s like subscribing to a gym membership but without commitment. Whether you’re new to exercise or looking to kick it up a notch, GuavaPass studio partners give you access to professional guidance.

    Cons:

    • No renewal warning – If you only want to sign up for a certain period, be sure to cancel in advance as direct debit payment comes out without warning before your month is over.
    • Limited credit per studio per month – I could only book one studio once a month in the package I’m subscribed to. This means that I could not attend a class in any same participating studio in the same month.
    • Unused classes don’t roll over – If you only take three of your four classes in a month, you don’t get the one credit carried over to the next month.

With all things considered, I would recommend GuavaPass to anyone who’s looking to get fit or get back into shape, those wanting more choice and versatility in their fitness regimen, and those looking for good value for money. Review of Little Winehaus (Paligsahan, Quezon City)

Comfortably sitting 10 people indoors or al fresco for bigger groups, Little Winehaus transports you to another city other than Manila. Think Spain or Italy, and reminisce wine cellars in Europe. The setting is a mixed of traditional and contemporary, with natural stone and brick walls, barrels made into tables, modern lighted menu board and paintings, and several traditional decors.

Review of Little Winehaus (Paligsahan, Quezon City)

Little Winehaus in Paligsahan, Quezon City is a good first date spot. It’s not spacious inside but it has charm. The atmosphere is cool and casual, where simultaneously feeling laid-back and happening. It’s where you stop for some wine or a glass of sangria and a decent snack for more of a sit-down situation.

The wine menu consists of red and white varieties from various countries. Some of the popular choices are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Malbec, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Rose, and Moscato. There’s also a wide range of cheese to pair with wine. The best thing of all? Their wines are at Happy Hour prices! For food, house specialties include the Caviar Pie, Jamon Serrano, Callos, Li’l Brats, Cheesecake and Dulong.

We loved their sangria, dulong. lil brat 2, cheesecake, and jamon spread. You will, too! Try pairing different food and wine and discover a new favorite. If things look promising and you want a full-meal route, there’s no problem and no hassle ordering food from other restaurants within the same food hub.

  • Review of Kusina Juan Republika (Paligsahan, Quezon City)

Review of Kusina Juan Republika (Paligsahan, Quezon City)

Gifts, days off work, drinking booze in the middle of the day – these are some of the greatest parts of the holiday season. Also, chow time and family time! If you still don’t know where to go, check out Kusina Juan Republika in Paligsahan, Quezon City. Their specialty? Kapampangan food with a twist!

Established in May 2016, this Filipino restaurant prides itself with serving home-cooked Pinoy favorites, the way your mom does it, with TLC (Tender Loving Care). It’s a recommended a venue for gatherings, be it special celebrations or simple meetups with family and friends, where the ambiance is “home away from home.” There’s a huge selection of dishes from appetizers, entrees, soup, noodles, rice, and sets, so you can expect a delicious and exciting meal whenever you come.

Review of Kusina Juan Republika (Paligsahan, Quezon City)

Kusina Juan Republika serves great, fairly priced Filipino food and always guarantees you won’t leave at all hungry. The waitstaff is set on making sure you have an excellent time, Christmas, holiday or otherwise.

Our meal started out with a serious helping of Sizzling Balut (PhP 190)- preserved duck eggs cooked in an appetizing sauce. Try this Filipino delicacy if you’re into exotic food. Built a bit like a parfait, you have the egg white at the bottom, the duck in the middle and then the yolk in layers.

Do not miss the Krispy Pata (PhP 495). A porcine obsession of many Filipinos, the deep-fried pork knuckles had a great separation of fat and lean, with a pleasant, firm texture. The pork struck a balance between tenderness and chew and showed off a wonderfully crisp exterior to boot. It’s quite good when eaten alone but better with vinegar and chili sauce for a touch of tartness and a more balanced taste.

My mom dearly loves grilled catfish or “Inihaw na Hito” (PhP 220), and we’re glad it didn’t have a muddy taste. It was our first time to try it with Buro’t Mustasa. Buro is a local delicacy of Pampanga which is made of fermented rice. It has a pungent smell and is usually paired with fried food like pork, chicken, and fish. Mustasa refers to preserved or pickled mustard greens. It’s definition a good option to eat catfish with this condiment, but I still think that the classic combination of vinegar and soy sauce would work well with the catfish.

I’m usually not a fan of sisig, but even I must admit that Kusina Juan Republika’s sisig isn’t bad. They actually offer two versions: one is Sisig ala Manila (PhP 195) which came out crunchier and the other is Sisig ala Pampanga (PhP 195) made with grilled pork with fresh onions, chicken liver, and fresh chili pepper.

A Filipino meal just wouldn’t seem complete without some sort of rice. In this case, ordering Pinakbet Rice with Seafoods (PhP 180) would be for your maximum pleasure. It had an abundance of varying flavors at play. The cast iron pan was loaded with a vibrant mix of seafoods, vegetables, and fluffy grains of rice that were powerfully flavored. The sweet, briny flavor of the mussels and the delicate flavor of the squid shone throughout the dish and was enjoyed by all.

Kusina Juan Republika is located at the same compound (or “food park,” if you will) as Bento & Co, Urbanidad Cafe, Little Winehaus, Open Table, Adelaida’s Delicacies, 5YNCO Bar, and Brewology Cafe. They offer “menu sharing.” This means that you can get food from other establishments within these restaurants whenever you’re seated. Ask one of the staff for the menu and request to have desserts or drinks served at your location, at no additional service fee.

Kusina Juan Republika has also been featured in Taste Buddies (GMA News TV). Watch the video here:

Review of The Brewology Cafe (Paligsahan, Quezon City)

If you want to be at home all day but also think it might be healthy to have a change of scenery, check out The Brewology Cafe. It’s a small cafe in Scout Lazcano Street serving equally-excellent specialty coffee and baked goods. I predict you’ll stick around long enough to have time for both. Especially if you have a sweet tooth, this place is for you. ♥

We tried all their best offerings recently. If we’re talking about the most number of amazing desserts I had in one seating, this must have set a record here! 🙂

Review of The Brewology Cafe (Mother Ignacia Avenue, Quezon City)

    Ambiance:

The Brewology Cafe features a minimalist interior with light wood fixtures and cozy spots to curl up with your coffee or chat with a friend. It showcases a beautiful interplay between pure form and function, keeping the place feeling natural yet modern. It’s unassuming, comfortable in its own skin and all the more chic for it. This cafe has enough space for groups of people to hang out, and the setting can work for a low-key date, too.

The aroma of coffee plus the relaxed atmosphere makes it feel like being at home. Window blinds work well to take the flare out, control the amount of sunshine, and encourage privacy inside. Overall, there’s nothing particularly striking or compelling with the design. The food and drinks here have more stories to tell.

    Food:

The menu looks overwhelming with all things nice and sweet. We settled for the following: Heaven on Earth (H.O.E.) (PhP 165), Cheesecake Brownie (PhP 75), Cappuccino Cheesecake (PhP 145), S’mores Brownie (PhP 70), Red Velvet Brookie (PhP 65), Slutty Brownie (PhP 80), Chocolate Cake (PhP 90), Waffogato (PhP 160), S’mores Waffle (PhP 190), Manual Brew (PhP 160), Latte (PhP 155), Babysitter Coffee (PhP 160), and Scramble Milkshake (PhP 120).

There wasn’t anything there that didn’t taste like heaven. The baked goods were soft, moist, and truly delectable. Everything you order will be good no matter what, so share with a friend. Or don’t. 😛

    My five favorites:
    1. Red Velvet Brookie – This brownie-cookie hybrid will leave you punch-drunk in brookie love! Its texture, taste, and the layer of golden, buttery, chocolatey top were divine.
    2. S’mores Waffle – It’s not diabetes-inducing sweet and I enjoyed the marshmallows. My heart was content.
    3. Slutty Brownie – Covered in a layer of fudgy gooey brownie, this is the ultimate marriage of chocolate chip cookie and Oreo fudge bar.
    4. Babysitter – It’s strong mocha coffee with pillowy soft and rich-flavored marshmallows melt on top. Yuuum!
    5. Heaven on Earth – It’s literally what the name implies. It’s a step-up version of the regular affogato, with coffee jelly, mocha cream, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and a cold brew instead of espresso.

    Price for Value:

The Brewology Cafe is your new reason for getting out of bed in the morning. Prices are fair and decent given the value. If you want to get refreshing drinks and eat clouds of sweetness, visit this place at least once, and you’ll be hooked in no time. A huge plus is that you can order food from this cafe when you’re dining in any restaurant within the same food hub. They offer “menu sharing.”

Ask one of the staff for the menu and request to have desserts or drinks served at your location (Kusina Juan, Bento & Co, Urbanidad Cafe, Little Winehaus, Open Table, Adelaida’s Delicacies, or 5YNCO Bar) at no additional service fee.
