Our Pregnancy Story: How I Got Pregnant with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)

We’re beyond excited to announce that we are expecting our first baby! There is so much glory wrapped up in every detail of our story, so I made a blog post. Grab a drink, put your feet up, and enjoy reading. 🙂

    A Bit of Background

Louie and I got married on March 26, 2017. Adjusting to married life could be an overwhelming time for a lot of newly married couples. But since we already had a strong foundation of eight years as boyfriend and girlfriend, it didn’t take long before we felt comfortable and become well-adjusted into being husband and wife. We spent time mostly watching movies, trying new restaurants, traveling and just enjoying each other’s company.

    Before Pregnancy

The discussion about having a baby happened months before our wedding. My dream was to have our first one before I turn 30 years old (in 2019). In my mind though, I knew that dreams don’t come true as quickly as we’d like and that the world is not exactly a wish granting factory; we have to take the necessary actions to make them happen.

For the most part, my biggest worry was my irregular periods. It has always been super irregular, ever since I was in my teens. There were times when I didn’t have it in 2, 3, and even 6 months! Definitely, it deserves attention, especially in this age when I’m ready to get pregnant.

In July 2017, I visited an obstetrician–gynecologist to figure out what’s going on with my body. Through a transvaginal ultrasound scan (TVS), I was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). I dreaded the condition, with the assumption that it would take forever to conceive. The doctor was great, friendly, and proactive in explaining about fertility and PCOS treatments, so I left the appointment feeling less discouraged and more hopeful.

What are Polycystic Ovaries and What is PCOS?

PCOS is correlated with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, depression, and excessive hair growth. How could I have PCOS? was the question that circled around in my head. My blood pressure and blood sugar level were normal, I wasn’t overweight (and in fact, quite the opposite), didn’t have hirsutism, and wasn’t acne-riddled.

But then, in addition, PCOS is characterized with having high levels of androgens. Per the doctor’s findings, I had an imbalance of sex hormones, with more testosterone than estrogen.

The gynecologist explained how PCOS and pregnancy are closely linked. Polycystic ovary is when each ovary has tiny cyst-like structures. One of the most important factors for a couple to conceive is the development and release of egg (ovulation) in the female. In a woman with PCOS, either the eggs are not produced at all or they are of poor quality. That’s because the ovaries of women produce an excess of male hormones—a condition not ideal for egg development.

Typically, intensive treatment involving medications and changes to lifestyle are required for a woman with PCOS to get pregnant. Therefore, for a safe pregnancy, treating PCOS at its root is strongly advised. To help regulate my period and increase fertility by restoring ovulation, my doctor prescribed Duphaston (two times daily for five days). 10 days after stopping the pill, I’d have my period. It worked, every time, for two months! The doctor said I could stop taking Duphaston on the third month to check if my menstrual cycle would be normalized, and thank goodness, it did.

In addition to taking the prescribed medicine, natural treatments for PCOS which I believe also helped were as follows:

    1. Dietary Supplements as Natural Fertility Boosters

When the body can’t regulate insulin, it can build up and cause higher levels of male sex hormones or androgens. Adaptogens and some herbal supplements can help with hormone regulation, insulin resistance, and inflammation associated with PCOS. I took Navitas Organics Maca Powder, Nature’s Answer Vitex (Agnus-Castus) Chastetree Berry Vegetarian Capsules, Spirulina, and Iron Complex from Healthy Options with a nod of approval from my doctor.

    • Maca is a nourishing food for the endocrine system, aiding both the pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid glands—all involved in hormonal balance. I took maca in powder form and added it to smoothies.
    • Vitex is a fantastic herb for fertility, helping with a range of issues such as PMS, low progesterone, lack of ovulation, irregular menstrual cycles, lack of a menstrual cycle, acne and so much more. Unlike refined synthetic drugs which force the body to change, Vitex (also known as chasteberry) nourishes and supports the system bringing about long-term balance.
    • Spirulina is one of the highest quality protein, superior to all other plant proteins, which is vital to sustaining pregnancy.
    • Menstruation depletes iron stores. Taking 18mg of iron a day helps make hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying component of red blood cells.

    2. Stress Reduction

Stress impacts fertility. A constant state of stress can actually shut down reproductive function, and this is not ideal when trying to get pregnant. When stressed, the body floods with cortisol, which can interfere with the hormones that regulate menstruation.

Since I work full-time in the office for more than 9 hours every day, drive about three hours back and forth, wake up very early, and even do extracurricular activities during the weekends, life is full of high demand, which puts a lot of stress on the mind and body.

I prohibited myself to use my laptop to blog or continue work once I reach home from work. I made sure to just relax and spend time watching Netflix series and movies with my husband. I also slept an hour earlier than my usual sleep time.

    3. Exercise

Whether it be aerobic exercises, weight training, swimming, or dancing, any form of regular exercise can help deal with the issue of PCOS and pregnancy. Since I’m the type who easily gets bored doing the same things, I subscribed to GuavaPass and attended a variety of classes, such as Zumba, Anti-Gravity Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Upgraded Forma Core, and Martial Arts Tricking, for three months.

    4. Diet Changes

Eating the right foods and avoiding certain ingredients can help manage PCOS symptoms. A nourishing diet can help regulate hormones and the menstrual cycle. Dietary improvements include: eliminating processed foods, reducing the consumption of grains, increasing dietary fiber, avoiding processed sugar, balancing blood sugar with multiple small meals, and daily intake of essential fatty acids.

I don’t eat a lot of sugary food, so to make a big change in my diet, I quit eating rice and limited my fruit intake to 1-2 servings per day. By “serving,” I mean one medium-sized piece. Keeping carbohydrate intake low reduces the amount of insulin the body needs to produce. Having a small amount of carbohydrate in my system all the time must be the best way to stave off sugar and carb cravings.

    5. Ovulation Tracking

Ovulation tracking and fertility apps help in monitoring the best time to try and conceive during the “fertile window” of the menstrual cycle. I downloaded and installed Flo, a free mobile app available in the Google PlayStore and AppStore. It’s a smart and simple female period tracker which has an accurate ovulation calendar, fertility calculator and PMS symptoms tracker. I used it as a handy period calendar or menstrual cycle diary where I recorded moods, PMS symptoms, and menstruation period. It sends notifications and reminders on predictions for upcoming periods, ovulation days, and fertility.

    Our Pregnancy Story

Since my period has become regulated, thanks to the meds and some lifestyle changes, I bought 30 pregnancy test strips from Lazada. Why 30?! So I can obsessively pee on them at home whenever I want, and I wouldn’t be worried about wasting ovulation tests in the clinic or in a hospital. The description stated that these strip tests are at a sensitivity of 10miu and work to an accuracy level of 99%. It’s a pretty good purchase at only PhP 361!

My monthly “regular” period stopped after six months. I panicked but decided to wait it out a few more days, thinking it might come eventually, just later than my new “normal.” It didn’t. Something might have gone wrong. With a strong surge to visit the doctor for a checkup, I scheduled an appointment in that weekend. But before then, Louie told me to use one of the pregnancy test strips to test for pregnancy.

After seeing the result, we looked at each other in shock—which turned into giggles. The test showed two very solid lines. While I was shaking my head and smiling at the same time in disbelief, he was laughing at me with an “I told you so” expression. 😛 I took another strip for confirmation, and it turned out positive again. I stared at the vibrant lines, with my heart and mind racing.

Perhaps since I got very cheap pregnancy test strips, the outcome may be inaccurate. Still in doubt, on the next day, I walked to the nearest drugstore from the office during our lunch break and bought a more expensive pregnancy test kit. The pharmacist said that the test would work just as accurate as a urine pregnancy test in a doctor’s office.

As soon as I reached home, I used the new kit and the result was the same. So yes—OMG, we’re pregnant!

We visited the ob-gyn in the weekend, as planned, with my family, for the fourth round of validation. We saw our baby’s heartbeat and the doctor confirmed the pregnancy. It was March 24, 2018, Saturday, two days before our wedding anniversary. ❀

    At 6 weeks

    Pregnancy So Far

As of this writing, I’m on my third trimester and the baby is the size of an acorn squash. I feel fine, except that I experience heartburn after every meal every day. Last month, I had a sonogram and was reassured that the baby’s growth is on track. My baby bump is showing so much faster now, and the flutters of a healthy baby kicking and jabbing are getting much stronger. I gained 15 pounds and my waistline (belly area) jumped from 26″ to 32″. I can’t fit into my pre-pregnancy pants anymore! My priority is our baby and if that weight gain goes with this pregnancy, so be it! 🙂

  • Gel Manicure and Regular Pedicure at The Style Hub Salon (Deal from Deal Grocer)

Gel Manicure and Regular Pedicure at The Style Hub Salon (Deal from Deal Grocer)

Last week, I scored a great discount from Deal Grocer (Ultra-Reliable Gel Mani and Classic Pedi at The Style Hub Salon for only PhP 488) and immediately booked a reservation in the weekend. My sister and I visited the salon to treat ourselves to a mani-pedi session. It’s also a good time to catch up and bond while getting our nails lacquered using ORLY’s nasties-free polish.

Review of The Style Hub Salon (Sequoia Hotel, Quezon City)

    Ambiance:

The Style Hub Salon on the ground floor of Sequoia Hotel (beside Ombu Restaurant, across Burger King) in Quezon City has been operating for five years. It opened on August 2, 2013. The salon looks bright and modern with a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. The large glass windows bring natural light and offer passersby a glimpse into the vibrant salon.

I love how it maximizes its space to keep an orderly work environment: Featuring a responsive layout, hair services take “center stage,” while nail services are positioned on the sides. The section for hair wash (shampoo system) is at the back, just beside the restroom, and there’s also an area for hair styling and makeup. In the middle, across the counter, there’s an accent mural with The Style Hub Salon’s logo, which is used mostly as a backdrop of photos happy customers share on social media.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bm0mZxvgsjA/

The color scheme, furnishings, and the floor plan give a distinctive look that appeals to the eyes. Mirrors don’t only serve their functional purpose but also give the illusion of a roomier interior and provide a divider between the reception area and the stylists’ space. All these present a good image that matches The Style Hub Salon’s services and clientele.

    Service:

Booking an appointment is a must, and reservation is only a quick phone call away. The staff informed me that there’s only one person in charge of manicure and pedicure so one of us will have to wait for the other to finish. I said that’s okay and proceeded.

Upon arrival at the salon, I gave the printed paid vouchers from Deal Grocer and handed out my ID for validation. The place was quite busy but it’s good that we were assisted at once and were seated in their cool leather reclining chairs. The well-trained mani-pedicurist started cleaning, filing, and shaping my sister’s nails then letting her choose from a wide selection of ORLY gel polish colors for the gel manicure. Three coats were applied. The nails were placed under the UV light to dry each time to set and were baked to hardened perfection.

The great thing about gel manicure is that it can last about two to three times longer than a regular polish (up to 4 weeks). Gel nails also keep their shiny finish (chip-free) until the polish is removed, and the natural nails under gel polish have a tendency to grow longer because of the extra strength. This is recommended for on-the-go and busy people, since a gel manicure holds up much better in the regular wear and tear of a workweek.

Since it was my sister’s first time to have her nails under UV light, she was amazed at how fast the gel polish dried up (done in 1-2 minutes). 😉 There are some cons on the curing process under the UV-emitting lamp though. It can potentially damage the skin when not used properly, i.e. over-curing the nail can make the polish become more difficult to remove. A properly applied gel should literally “float off the nail” with the acetone soak. After the three coats, the staff moisturized the hands with a deep-penetrating oil to repair any damage and strengthen the nails.

Power packed with vitamins, the ORLY GEL FX is no ordinary gel manicure system. Antioxidant vitamins A and E help to promote healthy nails while pro-vitamin B5 protects the structure of the natural nail. My sister and I prefer nude and safe colors that we can wear in the office. I picked out the ORLY Gel FX Coffee Break, which looks like a nice clear tan with a touch of pink. My sister chose the GEL FX Sands of Time, which is an earthy nude tone with the glory of orange, hot pink, and fiery copper reimagined and richly saturated.

Next, the pedicure was done with precision by first softening the cuticles with a white solution, cleaning and filing the nails once again, then applying regular nail polish with a color that also suits her style.

While waiting, I got a stack of magazine from the shelves and killed time reading beauty and entertainment articles. In less than an hour, it was my turn to get the treatment. The same process was done and we went out of the salon feeling pretty satisfied. 🙂

The only letdown was that we were not asked if we wanted to have a cup of freshly brewed coffee or our choice of complimentary beverage (as stated as part of the deal’s description).

    Price for Value:

As seen from The Style Hub Salon’s price list, the regular price of their Gel Manicure alone is PhP 500 and their pedicure service costs PhP 250. In total, we saved PhP 262 per person. The deal is great and price for value is fair. Don’t miss out on it, in case you’re interested to spoil yourself with this mani-pedi for a simple yet stylish statement.

The Style Hub Salon in Sequoia Hotel also currently offers the following promotions on Deal Grocer’s site: Flaunt Bouncy Curls with a Digital Perm so you can skip the curling iron with this permanent style and One (1) Session of Rampage Rebond to manage your mane with a silky straight solution. Redemption hours are Mondays to Saturdays from 9AM to 7PM and Sundays at from 9AM to 6PM.

  • My Large Healthy Options Shopping Haul from Shangri-la Branch (August 2018)

My Large Healthy Options Shopping Haul from Shangri-la Branch (August 2018)

I’m back with a Healthy Options shopping haul! It’s been a rather long time sine the last one. I visit Healthy Options stores at least once a month, but I haven’t had the time to share what I’ve picked up during my trips. Anyway, I hope to get back to my usual routine and post product hauls and even some reviews more frequently. 🙂 Here are my interesting finds from Healthy Options Shangri-la yesterday. My cart was filled with 20+ grocery items, personal care, and supplements for me and my family.

My Large Healthy Options Shopping Haul from Shangri-la Branch

    Food

Organic Valley Whole Milk has all the taste and nutrition of a tall glass of milk, without the glass. This whole milk marries farm-fresh organic goodness with revolutionary packaging that preserves the milk’s taste, even without refrigeration. It’s a great drink for breakfast and for any snack, and it’s also perfect on the go.

I was surprised to see that Healthy Options also offers veggie burger patties. As soon as I saw it from the chiller, it caught my attention and I felt excited to share some with my dad who’s a vegetarian. I got two flavor variants: Dr. Praeger’s Frozen Bibimbap Veggie Burger and the Organic Sunshine Barbecue Vegetarian Burger.

The Korean veggie burger consists of veggies, brown rice, and spicy Gochujang sauce. It can be baked in the oven on a baking pan, cooked using a non-stick pan over medium heat via skillet, or microwaved for 1.5 minutes. The Barbecue veggie burger is made with organic pinto beans and spices, with a hint of smoky sweetness and tangy flavors combined. This one’s great on the grill or sauteed in a pan.

Recently, I’ve rediscovered my love for baking. Instead of starting from scratch though, I prefer getting all-natural mixes so it’s faster and easier to prepare. I tried baking soft-baked cookies from the Madhava Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix last week, and it was a success! My husband and I adored the result: the cookies were golden around the edges, but still soft in the center.

This time, I’m excited to bake chocolate brownies out of Madhava’s Ooey-Gooey Chocolate Brownie Mix. It has the goodness of Khorasan Kamut wheat, an ancient grain, and natural, organic sweeteners. Khorasan Kamut wheat is higher in protein and minerals than modern wheat. The good thing is that there’s no overly processed sugars or preservatives here, just naturally crave-worthy brownies fresh from your oven. Sweet!

Next up, I got the non-gmo Alexia Seasoned Waffle Cut Fries. We’ve tried these before and it’s hard not to fall in love with the amazing texture and taste. These organic crispy potatoes are lightly seasoned with a flawless blend of sea salt, pepper, onion and garlic, creating a distinctive taste unlike anything you’ll find in your usual fry. I just put the pieces into the oven, wait a few minutes, and they’re good to go!

We love “collecting” delicious condiments in our pantry. Ginger People Sweet Ginger Chili Sauce looked interesting on the shelf. This sauce combines the flavors of sweet red peppers with the heat of ginger and chilies. It can be used in cooking or drizzled over food such as grilled jumbo prawns, roasted chicken, pork chops, crab cakes, burgers and salmon. We love the versatile blend of sweet and heat, and this sauce is a favorable dipping sauce for spring rolls and pot stickers as well.

For snacks with less guilt, I got Popcorners Smoking Jalapeno and White Cheddar. These corn chips are satisfying, without those unnecessary party crashers of trans fat, gluten, and GMOs. Pop open a bag, and experience the life of the party!

    Supplements

Healthy Options is the #1 store we trust when it comes to supplements. To gain and maintain good health, we always stock up on calcium, magnesium, and zinc as these minerals help maintain healthy bones, cell division and growth, and also support the body’s immune system.

My husband and I both take Healthy Options Chelated Magnesium to maintain adequate magnesium in the body. While it’s best to get magnesium through foods, such as green leafy vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains, supplements can fill the gap when your diet falls short. This especially helps with digestion, reduces PMS symptoms, eases anxiety, and helps to improve the sleep quality.

As the skin ages, it becomes less efficient at converting rays from the sun into vitamin D and a gradual loss of bone density can occur, leaving bones more vulnerable to breaks and fractures. We don’t have a lot of sun exposure since we stay in the office throughout the day. For people like us who are deficient in the “sunshine vitamin,” taking Vitamin D3 supplements can help ensure adequate amounts to support bone, teeth, muscle and immune health and also the internal absorption of calcium. Note: If you are unsure about taking supplements, consult a doctor or pharmacist before use.

    Personal Care

My mom ran out of facial scrub. To replace her Derma E Purifying Daily Detox Scrub (which she really loves), I got her Alba Sea Enzyme Facial Scrub. This product has received a lot of raves and positive reviews online, and I have also tried it before. It consists of powerful marine complex that stimulates cell regeneration for a more balanced, uniform, even complexion.

What I like about it is that it’s gentle but effective in fighting off dull skin. It’s free of parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances. The texture of the scrub is very fine and slightly gritty, like a very fine sand. There is a nice ratio of exfoliant to cream and it spreads very nicely across the skin. This scrub does not make my face overly dry and it has helped very much with the areas of my face that are prone to blackheads. The scent is also very subtle and just slightly floral.

This is our third container of Avalon Organics Intense Defense with Vitamin C Oil-Free Moisturizer. Apparently, it’s the only moisturizer that works effectively on my husband’s sensitive skin. The scent is fresh and orange-y, and the texture and consistency is great. It’s easy to spread, with soft, non-greasy hydration, light and comfortable while still doing its job to “energize” the skin. It definitely helps combat dry skin without making the face feel too oily. A huge win!

I’m curious to know how a dry shampoo cleanses the hair. I’ve been a fan of Giovanni hair shampoo and conditioner and have used up all the variants since last year. Now is a great chance to also experience using their dry shampoo. It’s also made with organic, vegan ingredients.

Giovanni Dry Shampoo claims that it’s a 2-in-1 power shampoo and hair volumizer that adds body, volume, and bounce, giving hair a boost while absorbing excess oil. How exactly is that possible without washing hair with water? How does it take out all the grease and how does it smell? I’ll find out soon enough! It may take a bit of practice to use.

I now have my own Minka Toothbrush Charcoal. Yay! Made of biodegradable bamboo, this high-quality and eco-friendly toothbrush is naturally antimicrobial and water-resistant as its nylon bristles massage teeth and gums for good oral health. It deodorizes the mouth, prevents bad breath and plaque build-up, and provides a gentle yet thorough clean. I’ve been eyeing on this product for several months. It’s something to support nature and the environment, as part of an all-natural lifestyle.

Finally, from the Baby and Kids section, I got Nature’s Gate Baby Shampoo and Baby Wash, Nature’s Gate Toothpaste Gel for Kids (Cherry), Babyganics Lip and Face Balm, and Field Day Baby Wipes. 😉

    Wrap Up

I’m happy with all my purchases. 🙂 Every trip to Healthy Options brings a smile to our faces. We believe that health is about more than just what you put in your body; it’s also about living and breathing a balanced, sustainable lifestyle through every aspect of your being from the home to mental well-being. Leading a healthy lifestyle not only keeps you feeling and looking your best, but it also keeps illness and disease at bay so that you can live a longer, happier and more vibrant life.

From organic food, cruelty-free toiletries, and supplements to eco-friendly household products, Healthy Options in the Philippines is not your average health foods store. It’s a one-stop shop so full of wholesome goodness where you can feel healthy, even while shopping! Here, you can find something to suit all dietary requirements whether you’re on a gluten-free diet, vegan, paleo, low-sodium, ketogenic and everything in between.

  • Book a Massage Online with Zennya, Get P200 Off Using My Code: rochkirstind344

Book a Massage Online with Zennya, Get P200 Off Using My Code: rochkirstind344

Zennya is like the Uber or Grab for massages in Metro Manila. It’s an on-demand app delivering trained massage therapists to your home. Services are ordered and delivered through a mobile app, and in about 30 to 40 minutes, a highly skilled and carefully vetted practitioner will be at your door. Zennya follows strict quality standards and protocols representing current industry best practices. I recently tried it for the first time and had a good experience.

Use my Zennya referral code “rochkirstind344” and get Php 200 off your first booking.

A brief background: I always have a back pain since I work about 10 hours sitting with a bad posture in the office. It’s difficult to avoid the pitfalls of sitting and slouching. I think my husband is already used to hearing my complains. He’s kind and patient to accommodate my massage requests sometimes. 😛

He himself also loves receiving massages. In fact, he has visited and tried almost every massage center in our area in Quezon City. One day through online search, he discovered Zennya and has booked massage therapists using the app several times ever since. After maybe his fourth try, he recommended me to use it as well. I used his code and got a ₱200 discount instantly.

    Zennya: Convenient Home Massage Service

Types of Massages Available: The Zennya app offers different types of massages and lets you choose between a male and female therapist.

    • Swedish Aromatherapy: Medium pressure massage using long gliding strokes with organic essential oil aromatherapy to reduce anxiety and induce sleep
    • Swedish Therapeutic: Deep massage using signature balm and Swedish movements to release tight muscle groups
    • Shiatsu: A manipulative therapy developed in Japan and incorporating techniques of anma (Japanese traditional massage), acupressure, stretching, and Western massage
    • Thai Foot Massage: Massage therapy focusing on the lower legs and feet using a stick to stimulate pressure points, as well as stretching and deep tissue massage techniques
    • Office Syndrome Therapy: An intense therapeutic session to treat repetitive postural stress using multiple advanced massage modalities (can be performed while sitting in office or home)

I chose the Office Syndrome Therapy since I thought the description suit me best. 🙂

Massage Duration: You can decide how long you’d like your massage to be and you can book your massage right away. The duration can be from an hour to an hour and a half long. You can also see the duration remaining on your phone screen once the session has started.

Communication and Tracking: Once a therapist is located and is matched to your profile, you may send instant messages through the Zennya app and see the updated location on the app’s map in real time. You can also track the therapist’s arrival and receive notifications as they arrive.

Massage Therapists: Zennya therapists are accredited by the Philippines’ health department or the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority. They are required to submit pertinent documents such as identification and police clearance, so you can be rest assured that you’ll be inviting and welcoming someone trusted in your home. The therapists are equipped with the high quality organic massage oils and aromatherapy and accompanied with ambient massage background music.

Ratings: Similar to Uber, Zennya has a five-star rating system which allows customers to rate their masseuse and the masseuse to also rate the customers. The quick rating and feedback will help the company weed out bad service providers and also customers, so both sides are protected. The bi-directional rating system encourages all users to be on their best behavior and promotes quality.

Favorite Option: By default, Zennya assigns the therapist nearest to your home when you book an appointment. But you also have the option to set your preferred therapists as “favorites.” In this case, the request will go to your favorite therapist the next time you book.

Cashless Transaction and Tipping: No cash at home? Don’t fret. You can pay through credit card or PayPal. I used my PayPal account and the payment was securely processed within the app. It saves the hassle of having to withdraw from an ATM, especially at night. I received an email receipt (digital invoice) after the massage. Cashless transactions provide full traceability on every service and eliminate problems related to available change, invalid currency or identity of both parties.

Reasons Why I Prefer Home Massage Service

    1. Save on travel time
If you’re busy and don’t have the time or patience to brave the traffic and travel to a spa or massage center, a home massage service is a great option. Life can be demanding and the good news is that you don’t have to spend more of your precious time getting dressed, preparing, and driving to and fro the spa. Booking an appointment with Zennya is way easier. Just lie back or sit down and get your body massage within half an hour after booking.

    2. Choose your own mood
While spas spend a lot of thought and money in their environs, there really is no place like home! You can watch Netflix, your favorite TV shows, listen to a podcast, or play your own soothing music just the way you like it. You can even light your own scented candles or darken the room to create a more relaxing ambiance, while the masseuse gives you the body massage of your dreams.

    3. Stay relaxed after the massage
The best part is that I can relax at home and not have to deal with the outside world after the massage. I hate it when I have to drive back home after getting pampered from a massage center. It’s as if the relaxation soon leaves as soon as I step out of the salon. A body massage is meant to relax the body and not cause stress afterwards. With a body massage at home, I can easily fall off to sleep while the masseuse lets herself out.

    4. Feel in charge
Book in seconds, arrange your own schedule, choose the massage type, and a vetted, background-checked massage therapist comes to you in less than an hour.

    Office Syndrome Therapy by Zennya

Because of modern lifestyle and work schedule, I sit for long periods. This causes muscular stress and postural damage. The Office Syndrome Therapy includes high pressure, targeted structural massage modalities that are best suited to address this type of chronic pain. It is specially designed to target common symptoms associated with workplace stress injuries including carpel tunnel, locked shoulders, and stress based migraines.

    Wrap Up

Massages are a great way to ease out the stresses of the day. It works out uncomfortable knots and tightness and also helps with other muscle-related injuries.

With Zennya, you get everything you want in a massage: quality, convenience, access, value, and security. Take control of your health by choosing services to match your care need through a beautifully designed mobile app that allows you to order the services you need on your time and schedule. The Zennya app is available on both the App Store and Play Store.

Ready to get a massage from the experts? Use my Zennya referral code “rochkirstind344” and get Php 200 off your first booking. Enjoy! 🙂

  • Review of Naturigin Dark Coffee Brown Natural Hair Color (from Healthy Options)

Review of Naturigin Dark Coffee Brown Natural Hair Color (from Healthy Options)

When it comes to skin care and beauty products, I prefer those that are made with natural ingredients as much as possible. To color my hair regrowth, once again, I contemplated between getting my hair done professionally in a salon or doing it at home myself. Apart from the hair regrowth, brassy hues and copper tones were also revealing a lot which I find unflattering.

I looked through claims of salons that use natural or less synthetic hair dyes, researched the brands they carry, and saw some offenders. The term “natural” could easily be misinterpreted. Some hair dye solutions may be ammonia-free but may still contain high levels of hydrogen peroxide, resorcinol, and parabens. These chemicals are quite harsh and can harden and thin the hair, and they’re thought to irritate the skin, eyes, bladder, and respiratory system. They are also suspected to be endocrine-disrupting chemicals that interfere with the production, action and/or elimination of our naturally present hormones.

Hence, ultimately, to clear all doubts, purchasing a box of natural hair dye at Healthy Options seemed to be the safest bet. Healthy Options carries a wide variety of all-natural hair dyes, but among all, Naturigin and Herbatint are brands that caught my attention the most. Both are developed with certified organic ingredients. They are great healthy alternatives to mainstream hair dye and are recommended if you’re like me who do not want to compromise your love for freshly colored locks. This time, I opted to try Naturigin in Dark Coffee Brown 3.0 (PhP 1095).

Review of Naturigin Dark Coffee Brown Natural Hair Color

Naturigin permanent hair color is 100% free from ammonia, resorcinol, parabens, SLS, and PPD. It has a naturally derived formula, with a special blend of 12 natural oils and extracts that nourish and protect the hair while coloring. What I also love about Naturigin is that it’s cruelty free and vegan, which is amazing. For the packaging, it uses sustainable wind energy and environmentally-friendly 100% recyclable FSC materials.

I could have a stylist apply the hair color, but the packaging already includes a printed step-by-step guideline which looked very easy to follow. It also contained a set of disposable hand gloves, so a DIY application at home should be fine.

I used one box of Naturigin and just followed the instructions. There are three different products for three different steps marked with A, B and C for the order of use. The Color Cream (A) has a special-lasting formula of gentle extracts; the Activator (B) has a special formula to ensure a perfect and lasting result; and the Color Lock (C) locks the color.

How was the application? Easy and straightforward. I emptied A into B (applicator bottle) and shook the bottle to mix the formula that creates the color. I parted my hair into many sections and began with the application. To keep things tidy and less messy, I used the Herbatint application kit which comes with a cape and a nifty hair color application brush. (Note: This is also available in Healthy Options.)

It took me around 15 minutes to complete the process from the roots to the ends, and I waited for 30 minutes for the color to develop before washing my hair and using the Color Lock.

How did the color turn out? Awesome! Here are my before and after photos.

    Before

    After

What did I like about Naturigin Natural Hair Color?

    • No awful smell: Hair dye usually smells like a mixture of harsh chemicals, and it’s scary to think that you are inhaling that as you dye your hair, especially when you’re pregnant, have sensitive skin, or have allergies. The good thing about this Naturigin product is that it does not smell awful like most other brands. Rather, it has a very faint floral smell.
    • No stinging sensation on scalp: When you have hair dye on your head you often know about it as the scalp feels a little irritated or tingly. This hair dye didn’t irritate my scalp at all. There was no stinging sensation; it just felt like conditioner that had been brushed through my hair.
    • Easy wash: Instead of the usual pools of brownish red dye that streams down the drain, this hair color looks just like shampoo being washed away. I didn’t have to spend ages washing my hair out till the water went clear. The color was so easy to rinse out and much more pleasant. After rinsing out the dye, I just followed up with the Color Lock, a pale green gel that resembles a shampoo, and used the Giovanni hair conditioner to create a silky smooth texture.
    • A pretty, natural shade: My hair has been fully covered, and it feels really healthy and soft. The color looks even and natural. It’s exactly the shade that I wanted
    • All-natural: If you’re thinking of switching up to something natural and safe, look no further. Naturigin hair dye is 100% Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) free, 100% ammonia free, 100% resorcinol free, 100% parabens free, with 12 natural oils and extracts, with certified organic ingredients, against Animal Testing, and vegan friendly.

  • How to Travel with Friends Without Going Crazy

How to Travel with Friends Without Going Crazy

Your best friend might be a blast on the weekends, but you never know a person until you travel with them. Maybe you love her upbeat attitude when you’re out to dinner in your town, but that same attitude becomes annoying after a 7-hour flight delay. Many friendships have ended thanks to bad travel experiences. You’ll not only be in challenging situations together, but you’ll likely be tired, frustrated, and downright overwhelmed.

How can you make sure your next travel adventure is a successful one without losing your best friend in the process? While most of it comes down to patience, there are things you can do to help ease tensions if they do get high. You might even prevent problems in the first place if you’re really careful. Here are the best tips for traveling with friends without losing your mind.

How to Travel with Friends Without Going Crazy

    1. Talk Money Before Your Trip

It seems like there’s never a good time to have the money talk between friends. While that may be true, you really don’t want to have that conversation while struggling over a meal in a new city or at the ticket counter at an international airport. Having that conversation early in your planning process will help you each know what to do without having to get into an awkward situation.

First, set some boundaries. How are you going to split costs? It’s easy to say “We’ll just figure it out when we get there,” but that only leads to conflict. Will you agree to split costs 50/50, or will you each cover different things. Be clear about who’s paying for hotels, transportation, deposits, and any extra fees. Don’t forget to talk about tipping so you’re both on the same page about how much is appropriate and when.

Another important talk is how much you’re willing to spend. You might prefer staying in budget hostels while your friend would rather sleep in luxury accommodations. Know how much you can afford to pay, and talk about these restrictions with your friend. You might need to compromise, but you should agree on a budget that you both can afford.

    2. Prioritize Your Itinerary

Nothing is worse than traveling with someone who has a completely different idea of what makes a good itinerary. Maybe you’d rather spend a night out while your friend likes to go to bed early. Even these small differences can build tension in your relationship, and lead to you both feeling upset about your trip.

Talk to each other about what you want to do most on your trip. Then, prioritize those things together. You might have to spend an afternoon doing unwanted surf lessons, but that just means you’ll have time for your hike later on. Don’t forget you can take time for yourself, as well. Taking a day to each do your own thing lets you refresh, while still enjoying your vacation.

    3. Spend Time Together

While it’s great to spend time individually, you should also find things you both agree you want to do together. Traveling is the perfect time to grow your friendship. Not only will you get to know your friend on a deeper level, but you can have fun together without the stress of your daily routine.

Take things a little less seriously. Go on an adventure. Play one of these games from Thoughtcatalog.com to learn more about each other. When you go home, you’ll be closer than ever, and you’ll have a new travel-buddy for life.

    4. Share Responsibilities

Finally, make sure you share your responsibilities both before and during your trip. Planning a vacation is hard work. Not only do you have to book accommodations and activities, but you might even need to pay deposits and apply for visas. While it’s okay if one friend takes over this process, it’s important to talk often throughout the process so you’re both on the same page.

Proper communication before a trip can prevent any big surprises that lead to arguments. Before your travel date, plan a list of everything you both need to do. Assign each other tasks so you both have something to do. When you’re traveling, share responsibilities like checking into daily activities or keeping track of tickets. This sharing will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed or out of the loop.

    5. Enjoy Your Trip

Traveling with your friends can be a great way to grow closer together, but it also introduces new tensions. Be upfront about any potential problems before they arise. Never keep secrets or resentment from your friend while on the road. Even small things can become big quickly when you’re spending so much time together.

Never be afraid to take some time for yourself while traveling. Everyone needs me-time every now and then, and your friend should understand this. As long as you’re talking with your friend about your feelings, you’ll have a smooth trip.

  • Review of Blue Posts Boiling Crabs & Shrimps (Greenhills, San Juan)

Review of Blue Posts Boiling Crabs & Shrimps (Greenhills, San Juan)

A seafood lover’s haven, Blue Posts Boiling Crabs & Shrimps has you covered when you are in the mood for a solid spot serving freshly cooked seafood. We had dinner here last weekend and this restaurant has become one of our new favorites. Large shrimps and crabs are the specialty, but mussels and fish entrees are also appropriate moves. Don’t sleep on pork and chicken dishes either; these are a nice change of pace. Mixing some poultry or meat in with your seafood is never a bad idea.

Review of Blue Posts Boiling Crabs & Shrimps (Greenhills, San Juan)

    Ambiance:

As a casual seafood joint in Greenhills, Blue Posts has a low-key airy atmosphere and has certainly made use of its ample space. Suspended bright lighting, like jewelry for the interior, brings an illuminated, modern space. As an added touch, lifebuoys serve as seafaring decors to complete the “sea” scene. The dining room has a mix of both orange walls and wooden accents that look attractive, undeniably cheery and bold. The only thing that don’t look appropriate are the scribbles of writings randomly covering the nicely painted walls.

    Food:

For our appetizer, we had Kinilaw (PhP 179)—chilled cubed fresh tuna mixed with native vinegar and calamansi. It’s tossed with green apple and spring onions which provided an offsetting zestiness and a great job rounding out the dish. In short, this starter was a mish-mash of straightforwardly satisfying flavors and textures in one. The tuna was so fresh! A must try. 🙂

The Garlic Pork Riblets (PhP 499), too, were laudable with a gratifying meatiness to it. This consisted of pork riblets marinated in native vinegar, salt, and freshly ground black pepper sauteed in butter with lots of garlic. The description on the menu alone looked appetizing and tempting! I guess this will totally work when eaten with garlicky fried rice.

Shrimp and butter have always been the ultimate combo, but the additions of garlic paired with zesty lemon pack this dish with more delicious flavor. Shrimps in Garlic Lemon Butter Sauce (PhP 1600) were superb, made with sweet and tangy shrimps that burst with a decisive snap in your mouth. The super tasty sauce begs to be mopped up with crusty bread. You won’t even need a plate for this one, just dig right in with bare hands (wear gloves for hygiene) or fork them up.

The Crispy Fried Crablets (PhP 345) were crisp and hearty, accented by the aromatics of three types of vinegar as accompanying condiments. Can’t go wrong with this!

    Price for Value:

We give two “claws up” to this seafood restaurant in Greenhills. The atmosphere was calm and the servers offered good service. Blue Posts Boiling Crabs and Shrimps has a delightful menu with divine seafoods, so we’re sure that this relatively new branch will be filled with huge crowds pretty soon. Expect to cash out over P1000 for each shrimp or crab entree, which may be pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for.

    THE CHOICE: YEAR IV

In the first six months of this year alone, over 500 new restaurants opened all over Metro Manila! Every month, every week, and almost every day it seems, there’s a new restaurant opening its doors. There are a lot of great new dining choices, side by side with the perennials, the classics that we grew up with.

In the lists here, we’ve got kick-ass newbies, neighborhood superstars, those who go on viral on social media, glitzy destinations, and even places serving down-to-earth cheap eats. What they all have in common is that they serve some of the best dishes in Metro Manila at fair prices, with service and ambiance that suit the setting. However, we’d like to emphasize that this is NOT a “Best of
” list. Taste, after all, is subjective. This is a vote for YOUR FAVORITES. 😉
