  • Kurimi Milk Tea Bar, The First 2D Café in the Philippines

Kurimi Milk Tea Bar, The First 2D Café in the Philippines

Unique interiors, delicious and refreshing drinks, and affordable pricing—these are the three main reasons why you should check out Kurimi Milk Tea Bar in Sct. Limbaga Street in Tomas Morato area. 🙂

Cafe Yeonnam-dong 239-20 in Seoul has been in our travel bucket list for the longest time. Now that we’re on lockdown and couldn’t really fly to Korea, Kurimi Milk Tea Bar is the closest we can visit to experience being inside a real-life drawing. Black lines along corners and edges and just all-white furniture look so creative. The two-dimensional effect will easily catch anyone’s attention. Even their bathroom has doodles and still consistent and seamless with the concept!

When we look back at our photos, we seemed like characters out of a comic or sketchbook. It’s a fun place to chill with friends. Architecturally, it’s impressive, even if you’re not a fan of milk tea. 🙂 Note that the limit capacity inside is 8 people, following social distancing and safety protocols. We were the only customers at that time, so it was calm and quiet and service was fast.

Kurimi Milk Tea Bar, The First 2D Café in the Philippines

Kurimi offers different variants of milk tea sourced from Taiwan and brewed fresh daily. They have the Cream Cheese Series, signature milk teas, Brown Sugar Series, Cheesecake Series, fruit teas, and specialty drinks. If you’re not into milk teas, fantastic options of fruit teas with tropical flavors like passionfruit, lychee, lemon, grapefruit, watermelon, and peach can match your preference. What’s also special about their drinks is the popping boba, a little juice ball filled also with fruit juice and pops when bitten into. It’s a great spin-off from traditional boba.

We got the following: Jasmine Milk Tea Cream Cheese, Jasmine Tea Cream Cheese, Blueberry Cheesecake with Pearl, and Watermelon Fruit Tea with Mix Popping Boba. Everything was delightful and enjoyable. The ones with cream cheese are the creamiest, certainly living up to the name “kurimi” which is Japanese from “creamy.” Yum!

Kurimi Milk Tea Bar now has three branches. They are open for dine-in, take-out, and delivery. If you’re just near Tomas Morato and feel safe going out, this one-of-a-kind café is worth the trip. Take as many photos as you’d like while enjoying cool drinks. 🥤

Heavenly.Spiced Delivers House-Made Gourmet Food Trays Within Metro Manila

One year ago, you could decide where you wanted to eat, hop on the car or jump in a cab, and be there enjoying the restaurant or cafe ambiance and perusing the menu in maybe an hour. Nowadays, food options are likely to be determined by what’s available on GrabFood, Foodpanda, Facebook, and Instagram. At a glance, you can see the list of all that can deliver based on your zone and you have easy access to these excellent food, desserts, drinks, and more. Postcode envy, sorted! Plus, if you’re outside the metro for lockdown, having a potluck party at home, or just looking to send food as a gift, some restaurants, catering services, and food businesses from home have you covered. Heavenly.Spiced is one fine example. 🙂

Whenever you need a good old-fashioned get-together with family and friends and want to save time up cooking, Heavenly.Spiced can literally spice up your meal—the kind that ends in buttons being undone, sighs around the table, and any stresses being mellowed by the soothing effect of heavenly-tasting food.

Chef Edmond Dannug, former Head Chef of Enderun Events Davao, came back to Manila and launched this online enterprise last August 2020. Since then, he and his fiancée got busy serving comfort food favorites like chicken wings, burgers and fries, baby back ribs, and a perfectly nap-inducing Hainanese chicken rice. in party-size packages.

Chef Edmond Dannug & fiancée Jasmine Guillarte

    Food Rundown ❤️

ANGUS BEEF BURGERS (PhP 1,500): The ingredients that make up a burger are pretty classic, but Heavenly.Spiced’s rendition shows quite a difference. It’s fun stuff, executed perfectly with super juicy double pure angus beef patties, battered onion rings, fresh lettuce and tomato, melty yellow cheddar cheese, and bourbon BBQ sauce all served atop a brioche bun alongside umami fries. One tray comes with six burgers and fries, with an unabashed tendency for the indulgent.

BUFFALO WINGS (PhP 900): If you love Frankie’s, then these are a must-try! These treats come close for sure. The tang of the vinegar in the hot buffalo sauce packs a nice zing. The crisp crunch of the chicken wing is so satisfying. Their 2-kg worth of buffalo wings hit all the right notes from spice to flavor.

BOURBON GLAZED BBQ BABY BACK RIBS (PhP 1,400): Served with umami corn, these fork-tender, fall-off-the-bone baby back ribs taste excellent. You can’t go wrong!

HAINANESE CHICKEN (PhP 850): Oh, hands down, this is my favorite among all the dishes here. Unassuming but flavorful, this food tray consists of rich chicken rice, slices of silky and tender chicken, and bokchoy paired with sweet soy, chili sauce, and an aromatic ginger-scallion sauce. Glorious!

    Wrap Up

Names can be deceiving, but Heavenly.Spiced’s is not. The flavors, textures, and presentation of their food scream absolute top quality. They’re another testament to the fact that not having a proper dine-in option shouldn’t hinder you from having a proper feast to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, graduations or any other milestone at home. You can surprise the family on their special day with these sumptuous food packages. Order in advance! They have a lead of 2-3 days.

  • Lia’s Cakes in Season: Avocado Carousel Cake (Delivery from Kapitolyo, Pasig)

Lia’s Cakes in Season: Avocado Carousel Cake (Delivery from Kapitolyo, Pasig)

We’ve been wanting to try the Avocado Carousel Cake by Lia’s Cakes (actually, any carousel cake from their cake shop) even before COVID happened. My sister’s birthday was our perfect opportunity to get it. Why is this cake special? It looks unique and crave-worthy because it’s made up of four different avocado variants: Avocado Cake, Avocado Cheesecake, Avocado Sans Rival, and Chocolate Avocado. No need to buy four individual cakes to try all the flavors! Also, each cake is made from real fresh avocados, without preservatives, and hand prepared using the recipe passed on from one generation to the next.

I had my first taste of Lia’s Cakes in Season’s Avocado Cake last year. I remember it was moist, tasty, and fluffy to the bite. The carousel cake is no different. Each slice was creamy, buttery, not too sweet (the last thing we need is a sugar-rush and sugar-crash), and absolutely smooth! Yes, the cake is green and tastes like avocado, but it’s delicious. Try it and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. 🙂

If you’re celebrating a birthday, any occasion, or just want to treat yourself to a nice dessert or snack, the Avocado Carousel Cake is a satisfying choice. The best thing is to slice the cake into smaller portions and enjoy sharing the smaller slices with your dining companions.

Lia’s Cakes In Season delivers their cakes and pastries for a minimum order of P850 to all areas in Metro Manila from their Pasig City hub for a flat rate of P150. I ordered via Lia’s Cakes In Season’s website weeks before my preferred delivery date and had a fast and convenient transaction. They respond immediately to Facebook chat. Delivery was also on point. Overall, great product and customer service!

  • Infinitea’s Milk Tea and Fruit Tea Family Collection

Infinitea’s Milk Tea and Fruit Tea Family Collection

Can’t get enough of milk tea and fruit tea? Infinitea introduces a Family Collection of their milk teas and fruit teas, with their 10th year celebration in the industry. It was founded on the love for tea and fueled by the passion of well-being. So let the fun times roll with 2.5-liter good for 8-10 servings and 5-liter drinks good for 12-16 servings! The packaging is a collapsible and reusable pack. Infinitea Family is available in the following variants:

    • Original Milk Tea – PHP 370 / PHP 680
    • Wintermelon Milk Tea – PHP 430 / PHP 800
    • Premium Okinawa Milk Tea – PHP 470 / PHP 880
    • Chocolate Milk Tea – PHP 425 / PHP 785
    • Jasmine Green Tea with Honey Lemon – PHP 330 / PHP 600
    • Peach Lychee Fruit Tea – PHP 260 / PHP 455

I decided to try their Jasmine Green Tea with Honey Lemon. It’s made with a green tea base flavored with jasmine flower. Mixing honey and lemon adds a soft and silky taste to the drink that strikes out the leafy taste of the tea. The result is a sweet, a bit citrusy, and aromatic tea that’s delicious with a soothing aroma. Hold back your reservations! This drink is refreshing, delicious and calming.

The bright citrus and floral notes of jasmine flowers are clear and strong. Your taste buds will be in for a treat of floral and fruity goodness. Enjoy a glass on your own or serve up a pitcher for your family. For a pretty-looking presentation, garnish with fresh mint, rosemary, basil, lemon, cucumber or other edible flowers and leaves. Add sinkers to explore a new dimension and texture to the drink.

The Family Collection is a great contribution for a potluck party with family and friends. Bring back the Filipino culture of salu-salo this holiday season and exchange not only good stories but also yummy food and drinks with loved ones.

5 liters is quite heavy but our “strong boy,” Lancie, who just turned two, was able to singlehandedly carry it! 😀

    Excited to try

Whoops! Sorry, Lance, you can’t have it! 🙂
  • My Version of Homemade Sushi Bake with Spicy Tuna, Crab Sticks, and Scallops

My Version of Homemade Sushi Bake with Spicy Tuna, Crab Sticks, and Scallops

After watching about three YouTube videos on how to make sushi bake, I was finally convinced to make it myself at home. I purchased all the ingredients from different online stores and asked my mom to buy nori sheets.

If you’re unfamiliar with sushi bake, it’s one of the latest food trends that’s like showing up in everyone’s feeds during the community quarantine. What it is simply is a deconstructed version of sushi. But instead of the rolled sushi, this one is baked in a casserole pan or a baking tray.

In this post, I’m sharing my very own version of the homemade sushi bake. This is very easy to make. You don’t have to be an expert cook and you don’t have to invest in expensive ingredients to recreate it at home. I’ve tried this recipe three times already. The results got better each time—good example of the old adage “try and try until you succeed.” 😉

    Super Easy Sushi Bake Recipe

    Ingredients for sushi rice:

    • 2 cups Japanese rice, rinsed well and cooked with 2 cups of water
    • 2 tablespoons cup apple cider vinegar
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 2 tablespoons sugar
    • 2 tablespoons truffle oil

    Ingredients for sushi bake:

    • nori sheets
    • 1 can spicy tuna
    • ¼ cup mayonnaise (preferably Japanese mayonnaise)
    • 1 cup shredded crab sticks
    • 20 pieces cooked scallops
    • 90g Kesorap Express Melt Cheese

    Procedure:

    1. Fluff cooked Japanese rice into your baking tray. Mix apple cider vinegar, salt, sugar, truffle oil well and lightly pour and press lightly on the rice.
    2. Place the nori sheets on top of the rice.
    3. Combine the spicy tuna, mayonnaise, shredded crab sticks into a mixing bowl and mix. Spread on top of the nori sheets.
    4. Place the cooked scallops and grate cheese on top.
    5. Bake it in the oven for about 8-10 minutes or until the cheese has melted or turned golden brown. Scoop a portion and wrap in nori sheets to serve.

My mom happily volunteered to take it out from the oven!
She also helped place it on the table to serve. Hihi.
    Enjoy!

This sushi bake recipe is a crowd pleaser in our family. It’s great for potlucks and get-togethers. No special sushi chef skills needed! ♡ Even when we’re still under the community quarantine, we can still enjoy delicious food without spending a fortune. If you get a chance to try this, let me know!

  • Food Delivery from Kopi Kopi Café & Kitchen, Santo Domingo, Cainta

Food Delivery from Kopi Kopi Café & Kitchen, Santo Domingo, Cainta

Social distancing shouldn’t mean unfulfilled cravings. When you’re not in the mood to cook or just struggling to find the right ingredients, a good way to snap out of it is to order delicious convenience food and call it a day. Kopi Kopi Café & Kitchen in Santo Domingo, Cainta is a spot to your rescue. They provide meal packages for hospitals, BPOs, corporate offices, and homes. My first encounter of Kopi Kopi was five years ago, during our taping for iJuander. We tried their best-selling cream puffs and boy, they’re really amazing, so close to food heaven that you can almost hear the angels singing when you bite into one. 🙂

Here’s a rundown of comfort food from Kopi Kopi Café & Kitchen we recommend. The party trays and food for sharing are perfect for get-togethers, family lunch or dinner, barkada take-out meals, and other celebrations. They also have à la carte meals which are ideal for those staying solo at home during the community quarantine.

Salted Egg, Parmesan, Buffalo Chicken Wings

There’s nothing fancy with their chicken wings: no bells and whistles, no exotic sauces, just textbook execution but they’re good especially for quick eats! Buffalo chicken wings are always my first move. The salted egg and parmesan are tasty, too, with the right amount of fry, while maintaining a juicy body on the inside without becoming overly slimy.

    Arroz Caldo

This Filipino porridge dish features a rich chicken broth, glutinous rice, chicken, and hard boiled eggs. It’s ideal for breakfast or anytime to soothe an upset stomach or remedy colds for cool days. I love that it’s warm and thick! 😀

    Pancit Bihon

Pancit Bihon with chopped vegetables is almost always present during merienda time or a feast on Filipino food. I like mine with calamansi to brighten up the flavors of the dish. Too bad we don’t have pan de sal right now! It’s good to eat pancit like a sandwich.

Cream Puffs (Order through this form)

Kopi Kopi has nailed the balance in a puff. Best when refrigerated! 🙂 The cream has the right texture and sweetness, the puff has an airy interior, and the crust is perfect—not too thick or crumbly or stiff. Their cream puffs are among the best we’ve tried so far. 🙂 Mini puffs are also available.

  • The Puerto Rican Coffee Buying Guide

The Puerto Rican Coffee Buying Guide

Puerto Rico is a small island located between Dominican Republic and Virgin Islands. With a population of only 4 million, it might not be considered as one of the happening or prosperous countries of the world. But if there is one thing that this country has been known for since the past many years – it’s the Puerto Rican coffee.

Just over a hundred years ago, Puerto Rico was one of the largest coffee exporters in the world. It all started way back in 1736 – during the times of Spanish colonies. Despite of a tough start in the beginning, the Puerto Rican coffee industry witnessed a massive boom during the 1800s, when most of the coffee producing part of the world was confronted with civil wars and economic devastation.

    Puerto Rican Coffee Varieties

Talking about the production side, the coffee harvest season is from August to March. Out of the total world coffee production, Puerto Rican coffee only accounts for 0.01% due to economic restrictions. Finding good Puerto Rican coffee beans can be challenging if you are not aware of the right brands that sell those specialty coffee beans.

As far as the Puerto Rican coffee variants are concerned, here is a list of some of coffee types that are harvested in the country:

    • Yauco Select
    • Rioja
    • Yaucono
    • Adjuntas
    • Coqui
    • Crema
    • Ciales
    • Café Rico
    • Alto Grande Super Premium

The usual flavor of Puerto Rico coffee is medium acid brew, having a unique flavor and an aromatic feel to the beverage. Locals usually go for an espresso, a cortadito or a café con leche (the café latte in the United States).

You can easily find these coffee varieties in the local coffee shops if you are in Puerto Rico, at very affordable prices.

Forget Starbucks if you are in Puerto Rico

If you ever get a chance to travel to Puerto Rico, well, one thing is for sure – you don’t have to look for a Starbucks or any other Western coffee chain to quench your coffee thirst. A better idea would be to try out the local coffee shops, some of which we have handpicked for you:

CafiCultura – This is an old residence that has been turned into a specialty coffee place. It is located on the north side of Plaza Colon.

Café Cuatro Sombras – This coffee place has deep roots in coffee beans cultivation – dates back to 1846. Known for its 100% Arabica coffee beans, their farm-to-cup operations ensures you get the highest quality of coffee each time.

Café Colao – This is one of the newer coffee places in the country, but certainly liked by both locals and tourists for their wide variety of coffee beans.

Café Don Ruiz – Located in the Ballaja Barracks, this place also has a long history producing traditional 100% Arabica coffee beans that are grown and harvested in the mountainous region of Yauco farm which is around 3,000 feet above sea level. The flavor you get here is rich, robust and full-bodied.

Café Lucero – a place known to serve handpicked, high quality 100% Arabica coffee beans that are harvested in the mountains of Ponce.

Café Nativo – With an ideal mountainous view, Café Nativo is the perfect spot for those who like to enjoy coffee with a little bit of landscape. Using pure spring water and ecological techniques, the coffee beans are grown and harvested at a low temperature to ensure natural aromatic oils and flavors remain present in your cup of coffee.

Friend’s Café – Might not be as traditional as the rest of the coffee shops, this is still one of the better options that you will find for a perfectly brewed cup of Puerto Rican coffee in the Plaza Colon area.

Hacienda San Pedro – With a history that dates back to the early 19th century, Hacienda San Pedro seres artisanal Puerto Rican coffee that is grown and harvested in the mountains of Jayuya. The coffee is quite rich, full-bodied, velvety and has flavor notes of spice and caramel.

Quick Overview of Famous Puerto Rican Coffee Brands

Going to Puerto Rico might not be part of everyone’s travel itinerary, particularly during the COVID-19 global lockdowns and travel restrictions still in effect in most parts of the world.

This is why we have picked some of the best brands that sell Puerto Rican coffee:

    • Alto Grande
    • Café Sabino
    • Café Molido
    • Artesania Boricua
    • Café Tero
    • CariBrans
    • Café Aromas Del Campo
    • Hacienda San Pedro

Puerto Rican Coffee Guide – In a Nutshell

Usually rated as one of the top espressos in the world, Puerto Rican coffee is an absolute delight, particularly for those who know their coffee well enough to differentiate between medium and darker coffee roasts, with varying levels of sweeteners, aroma and oils as well.

Even with all the obstacles, difficulties and challenges that the country faced since the past many years, Puerto Rican coffee is still loved and demanded by a number of coffee aficionados all around the world.

Year 2017 was somewhat a sign of hope in terms of coffee production and exports, however, due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, the country was once again hit with severe economic conditions – affecting coffee production as well.

Nevertheless, Puerto Rican coffee was, and will always remain a specialty coffee for a lot of people out there.
